Been hunting for an R33 for a while and sick of trolling the threads and posting in topics and never getting replies.

Turbo

1996+ and/or dual airbags

ABS

Manual

2 door

No rust

RWC

Basically looking for as cheap as possible and meeting that criteria. Don't mind if it's a bit chipped and dented or whatever. Granted if a car is in good condition or has some power mods i'm willing to up the budget.

For R33 I Just missed out on one that was $5,000 and I turned down on that was $8,500 so there's a rough floor and ceiling.

Just missed out on an R34 for $8,000 turned down one for $12,000 so there is the second price range.

Don't be slow, I need a car ASAP for work so i'll take the first good deal that comes my way.

Won't find a modded r33 in a mint condition for 8k mate, there're so many at your price range on carsales but I'm pretty sure they're either thrashed or just plain stock. Will never get an r34 for 8k mate, maybe an automatic one or one that's really thrashed.

10k will get you a good one with mods and decent interior/exterior.

8k for a gtt? Haha don't bother man.

You get what you pay for, 9k will get you a decent 33

The 8k GTT, black, manual, Nismo kit was an epic bargain, only thing wrong with it was the paintwork which I could fix later but bargains like that go fast and I wasn't fast enough.

I'm not looking for mint condition, far the opposite. I'm looking for cheap but no rust or crash damage basically. I don't mind about some small dents or paint chips. I'm buying this car while unemployed so i'd like to buy a cheap skyline to keep debt to a minimum and upgrade when the pay checks come rolling in. Basically it needs to run until I can upgrade and be fairly easily resalable.

The market for skylines is really slow, I know a few guys that'd like to sell but just can't so they dont bother.

If it's only temporary just buy a daily, buy a cube or a tiida if you doing hwys. A cheap skyline will only be trouble.

What will happen if you buy one and blow an engine? With no income I doubt it'll be ideal and having one in shit condition you can usually double the kms on the odo.

Just be careful and think about the what ifs. Skylines are pretty expensive cars to own if you get a shitty one. I kno a guy that bought a good condition 34 gtr. Blew the engine in the first week and theres10k gone

Yeah I agree with what Ruxis says mate, don't settle for a cheap skyline. It's a bargain for a reason mate, gotta be careful with these skylines. Gotta get a mechanic to get it checked, never ever buy one that just looks good. You'll never know what's underneath. There're lots of under $8k stock series 2's on carsales mate, why don't you check them out if you're looking for a cheap one? Some of them are pretty mint too.

Can't just keep waiting for those once in a lifetime cheap modded skylines which could be risky. Nobody mods a car and doesn't push it lol. If they tell you that, that's just plain bullshit hahaha.

If you're unemployed these things are going to burn a hole in your pocket mate, they suck up nothing but good fuel/oil replacements. If I were you I'd save up and increase your budget and get a good one that comes along after you get a job. Because maintaining these sort of cars are going to be pretty costly if it's a daily. It's not exactly fuel efficient, and the more km's you clock, the quicker you'll need to spend on those expensive oil replacements.

Cheers guys, thanks for the input. I had a question on getting it checked by a mechanic. Do I need a mechanic to do any particular checks like I have been hearing a lot about a leak-down test?

I have been trying to find an R33 trust me but every time I see one there has been a problem;

  • Sold just before I get there
  • Rust
  • Damage
  • Not willing to do RWC under any circumstances
  • Not responding to "i'd like to come and see the car" messages

Just advertising here to increase my reach and exposure.

The reason for paying a bit more for one with mods done was that i'd save a boatload of money rather than doing it all to a stock skyline as I do intend to track the car unless I get a mint one that i'd just granny drive until upgrade.

Do you guys think I might be better of stretching up to a low priced R34 instead? I was going to get an R34 originally but when the price gap seemed to be like 13k for R34 or $6k for R33 I couldn't justify it. As the pric difference between R33 and R34 gets closer I become more inclined to get an R34. What are your sentiments on that?

my friend bought a stock gtt 2 months ago for 17500 and i bought mine last year for 17500 stock aswell.

you dont want to buy a gtt for that price mate, itll be a bucket of bolts and just crap. think about it.

"perfect condition, good paint, makes a noise changing to third" you buy it thinking its minor, gearbox blows, theres 2k to rebuild it.

ive raced my car 4 times and done 2 burn out days and ive ever had a single issue with it.

and my car would be better then a 13k bucket with shit paint and a brand new gearbox lol.

get a 33 in great condition.

a compression test will tell you most things, if that comes back sus you can get a leak down test, but if you find a car with "low odo readings" (all are wound back so dont get to excited about numbers unless your reselling soon) look at seats, gearknobs, steering wheels, look for general wear and tear for the age of a skyline.

feel free to pm me for more help before this post gets blocked haha.

Looking at this one ATM

http://www.carsales....Max&sort=~Price

Opinions? Also need help he says I can BRING a mechanic after 7PM. Anyone know who does that kind of service?

Get racv to do it costs about 200-300$ i think, also a skyline being cheap doesnt mean its shit.. iv';e picked up all my cars for very cheap including a r33 gtst manual with reg/rwc for 4k and na auto r34 coupe for 5k if was the one that had " i love cops" plates registered to it, and i just seen a yellow r34 auto coupe sell for 8k with reg n rwc

Also as you mention ur unemployed i wouldnt suggest getting a skyline due to have no income, its a expenstive car to maintain i suggest getting a honda civic or integra etc 4 cylinder so cheap of petrol and cheaper to maintain, dont get much stuff around from cops etc.. i have integra myself and my skyline as my daily.

where are you seeing GTTs for 13k? I've been monitoring carsales for a few months and they rarely list for less than 15K, let along 13k (unless that's after bargaining) and in fact in NSW most of them list for 19-20k. which makes me think I might as well go and get a brand new car instead of spend THAT MUCH on a 12 year old car.

ruxis - but yes I do agree, spend more and get a good car - but honestly, it has to be a reasonable amount and I don't understand why if everyone says that the market is slow now, that the cars are still priced so high. anyway, freakin difficult to find a black one....

Check my thread for clean stock standart r34 gt-t in white, manual. :)

Looking for quick sale as I have found car that I want!!

And yeah agree with everyone, don't get something too cheap that will only cause you trouble and more $ down the track.

Get a decent one that you can maintain and keep without troubles.

Cheers

Thats been on gumtree for a bit, looks ok in the pics but I personally would be very very cautious of buying cars from that area :whistling: , who knows how many cars that actually is joined together.

Im in the same boat as you at the moment, looking for a 33, 32 or a 34 thats half decent and has a rwc, I missed out on a nice white 33 that was on here, that sold within a week, the good ones sell quick, the ones with issues or are over priced stay on carsales for ages.

The problem is that guys selling ones that are stock standard think there worth a crap load because of that, whereas to someone wanting to mod, even midly, its just not finaically smart to buy a 100% stock one, the other problem is the ones that are modded are either done very badly or have been poorly treated.

From my experience buying cheap skylines or any cheap import for that matter will only give you problems. There are bargains out there but 99% of the time you get what you pay for.

There are plenty of 34 GTT manuals for 15k or less, guys asking 17-18k or more for stockish ones are stuck in 2010, I sold mine for 18.5k more then 2 years ago and that had alot of good mods and factory upgrades, I honestly dont know why there is such a massive price gap between the 34's and 33's still.

Both well under 15k, these are more realisticly priced.

eightsixboy - Thanks for that, yes I've noticed there is a discrepancy between other states and NSW, it seems that GTTs are 'worth' more here...not. Having said that, I failed to mention one important thing in my last post and that was Series 2 GTTs, not Series 1s. I guess that makes the price worth a little more, but still, not the 19k that a lot of them are being listed for. I guess most of the 1998/1999 models are at the 15k mark but honestly, would rather buy a 2000/2001 model.

Are the series 2's really worth the extra cost though? Besides that mint blue one that was sold on here I don't think its worth the extra cash, from what I've seen the interior is a little better, the diff is a little better and thats about it Im pretty sure, mine was a series 1 and that had factory xenon's, nismo kit, gauges and suspension etc etc

Each to there own but just think of the mods you could do with the money saved if you buy a series 1 34, 5k or more goes along way

well, that's exactly what i'm saying - the changes are minimal (though apparently in terms of the engine/parts there are differences!!!) but for some reason people decide the S2s are worth a few grand more for that when they're not. if anything, they're worth more purely because they're newer, but that doesn't really indicate much when they are still 10 year old cars anyway. nor does it justify the vast difference in price.

I'd list mine for 19k cause it looks like how a gtt should, look on Carsales in nsw they all look so crap.

Cars in nsw cost heaps more for every car, maybe supply and demand maybe more enthusiasm maybe there are more buckets that raise price of good ones but that's just how it is. Every Gtr I like is in Vic sadly.

I paid 17.5k on mine last year and put 1500 into servicing straight away and every where I go I get compliments of clean :)

ruxis - yeah, I get what you mean, and i totally understand that a value is placed on something which has been well taken care of. BUT. this doesn't mean that they are worth the prices that some people list them for. Every reply i've made in this thread, i've had your car in mind cos we've chatted about this before, but having looked around, I still maintain that in general the market price of S2 GTTs is higher than they should be. not that my complaining will actually do anything though

Yeah it's definitely higher. I just bought mine for the colour body kit and head lights. And I liked the thought that it was one of the last made which was the cherry on top.

Never intended to sell mine but then I drove a Gtr and my income now permits more servicing :)
