Hi all,

I noticed today that my skyline started blowing steam out of the exhaust and I mean alot of steam (not from exhaust condensation) any ideas on what it could be I thinking maybe head gasket? I know the exhaust valve in piston #5 is not sealing properly which I am hoping to get fixed next week, I noticed this when I had a compression test done on the car.

Any info would greatly be appreciated

Thanks

James.

Get the coolant tested for combustion gases. Not a conclusive test, but could tell you more than we can tell you. But yes, it does sound like a head gasket. Or perhaps a crack, which may be the cause of your valve leakage too, if it is through the seat area. You might have a lot of damage in that head (cross yoru fingers). I'd be looknig around for a spare head in case it turns out to be worse than you hope.

If you believe you're getting steam due to blown HG, it means water in cylinder. Get some pressure in your cooling system (ideally using a pressure tester), remove all spark plugs and let it sit for a while (ie come back in an hour). Check all piston crowns for coolant seepage, crank engine over while looking for coolant emission from spark plug holes.

Generally if its bad enough you'll notice a miss after the car's been sitting for a while, as coolant leaks into cylinder. The miss will clear after a few seconds usually, as the water clears.
