Hey all,

I've had a persistent oil leak coming from the rear of my RB25DET. I've replaced both of the camshaft rubber half-moons and sealed with silicon and there is no oil coming from those grommets or the cam covers.

If I run my hand lower down the head I can feel wet oil from this area (see pic) - my question is it even possible for this metal plug thing to leak? There is no mention of this thing in the service manuals - are they welded in? I suppose I can try silicon around them to see if that helps..

Any advice appreciated.. hoping its not a head off job.. :|

Thanks all!

Couldnt find a pic of the back of an RB25 so here is a front pic - same circle things

Those are coolant welsh / freeze plugs , they rarely leak "coolant" unless you run water or your engine gets below freezing temps with inadequate antifreeze

No oil would come from those unless something tragic happened , a fatal issue

most leaks are rocker or half moon ?

Clean the area off and watch it daily to see ?

Overtighten the rocker and it will leak

Actually one of the "coolant" welsh plugs at the back of the head is for "oil" where people put head drain fittings back to sump

How the F does that work?

Every modern engine ( past hmmm 50 years at least ) has similar freeze plugs in the head and block? When the head freezes they fall out ( without enough freeze protection) its a sacrificial plug instead of cracking the block or head ? australians dont normally worry about that until the plug rots out from corrosion

unless they pass thru the plug into the head somehow ?

Pretty sure I've sorted it by resealing the half-moons and just for good measure I put silicon around those welsh plugs as well haha.. will see how it goes but after a few drives there's no traces of oil anywhere yet!
