ok so the car in subject is a 1989 32 gtst

aircon dosnt work, need a bit of guidance from someone who knows more about electrics than me so i dont have to tip too much money into it

but must fix before summer hits!

ok so i have had the system re gassed with dye to find the leak, no leaks yet but the system is not yet operational. i assume i will have to replace something but thats the easy part.

the problem is my compressor and thermos are not switching on. i can hotwire it from the battery and switch the compressor on though so it does work.

i have had the pressure switch checked and their was another switch checked i think and that side of things work. i assume now that my aircon headunit itself has something broken in it, i was thinking next to just replace it and hope for the best.

is their something else electrical in the system though that i need to look at, or have looked at?

also does anyone have a wiring diagram for it?

Hey Glyn, do you have an aftermarket ECU ?

Quality units like Haltech or Vipec, there is a setting in these that can prohibit AC.

Likely not your problem but worthwhile being aware.

Also i seem to remember you can get a daig code out of the AC headunit.

Worth searching the forums for.

Obviously checked fuses ?

Just found many threads but this was in one of them.

Climate Control Diagnostics R32

The climate control has a diagnostic mode.

Enter the diagnostic mode by pressing the OFF button for five seconds within ten seconds of turning the ignition on.

Sensor check

Sensor check is selected by pressing HOT switch (the red triangle) while in diagnostic mode. The microcomputer detects whether each sensor input signal is within correct parameters. The results are displayed on the screen.

If normal, a "20" is displayed.

If abnormal the failed sensor number is displayed. The sensor numbers are as follows:

20 - all is normal

21 - outside air sensor

22 - Inside air sensor

23 - Water temperature sensor

24 - Intake temperature sensor

25 - Sunload sensor (small sensor on the left hand side of the dashboard near the windscreen)

26 - PBR

27 - Refrigerant temperature sensor

This should tell you if any of your sensors are faulty

hope this helps.

yeah i came across that a while ago, all was normal so the sensors seem to be working,

also side not i was wandering what 25 was... saw it the other day and i saw the electronics when the sun hit it and was thinking some model had auto headlights :P

all fuses are fine yup, and i have a nistune board, doubt that would do anything?

my sparky at work said he wanted to test all connections on the back of the unit and work backwards from their but thats allot of time and money, would be faster with a wiring diagram.

Fixed mine, turned out that the ecu was holding it back.

The ecu has a few states which it wil turn the ac off, most are safety related, but one of them is when you want full power out of your engine it will quickly switch the compressor off to minimise the draw.

I suspect when the nistune went in this was altered or something, mine was keeping that switch off. We rewired this so it listenes to the ac head unit not the ecu on that one. And bam Crispy cold air ready for summer

Hmmm does a Power FC do the same and prohibit the air con?

I haven't had air con for about 2 years now :(

When I first tried to fix it, I believed that it was a faulty compressor, which I had that replaced for a 2nd hand unit. Got the gas refilled, and thought I got the air con to work again as it was icy cold on the way back from the air con workshop, but after 15 odd so minutes of driving it never stayed cold and the air was like the temp of a normal fan.

I've been thinking that it's been the 2nd hand compressor all along, like maybe because it was 2nd hand the seals were brittle and cracked, so it leaked again. Never thought to take it back as I didn't want to spend more money recon'ing the thing.

But with this thread coming to my attention, could I be off the right track, and in fact it could be linked to my Power FC?

Sorry to hijack lol, but it's all relevant!

Cheers,

Andy

    • Hey all, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before.  I have a 2008 Japanese import V36 coupe with nav but without Bose. I bought one of those AliExpress android screens, which for the most part works really well.  The only thing that doesn't work is the air con controls (well sort of) and the factory reverse camera.  The AC can be controlled fine but it doesn't report the change in temp and mode to the screen, and the volume knob/other audio controls from the panel don't register on the learning app.  I am pretty certain that the problem is the difference in the head unit between base model (Nav but no Bose) 2007-2009 coupes and anything after 2009.  Mine is the one with the blue connector all the way to the right as seen in this forum post:  The reason I think this is there is one wire left over that doesn't fit anywhere on this head unit, or in the factory screen which also uses different connectors to more recent versions.  I've seen the upgrade from OWC, and have sent the guy a message on eBay but no response yet.  I also don't particularly need the whole kit, just *maybe* an adapter for this one cable.  Did anyone else here have the same problem, or have any insight about what I can do to get this working?  I have been in contact with the seller but all they seem to be able to do is ask for more pictures and videos. Minor edit to add:  I have been researching and found a screen on Aliexpress that actually specifies my head unit in the listing, so these things do exist.  I will contact the seller to see if the wiring adapters are interchangeable with other screens.   Thanks in advance!
