I saw this wank on whirlpool forums and i was looking up some info on r33 skylines because im interested in buying one when i sell my camry and this is what i found.

Some things to note:

1) The odometers have ALL been clocked back

i think its utter bullcrap and putting this topic up most of you will dissagree on most of these accusations.

Knowing that most of you guys love skylines and so do i and not having one makes me not a knowledable like the owners.

so i was wondering what are your takes on these deadly 6?

and also what are the highlights of having a turbo skyline(r32gtsT-33gtsT-34gtsT)

And what bad comes with the good of owning one?

i know all cars have there own problems and its a bit of a broad question but lets see if you can try and

sell the skyline name.

#1 is not far off the mark, most have been wound back, just ignore it you are buying a 15yo car

#3 not really

#4 seriously noone buys these to granny them otherwise grannys would be buying them

#5 all cars are hard to sell nowadays, the target market is flooded now that P platers cant buy them and once you are off your p's you can probably afford something better, hence they are cheap/good value its a buyers market

#6 They are certainly targeted, however if you are 40 and dont speed you wont have a problem

1) 99% is the case.

2) Would be similar to any other import. Obviously higher than your A-B Camry.

3) Doesn't seem that bad... my mum's old VN commodore got broken in when parking at Uni at night compared to my Skyline (none)

4) What is their difinition of "trashed hard?". I have being on WP forum for a while (couple of years now) & the road saints on there would think anything >30% throttle when taking off from the lights or letting your engine rev past 4k rpm is "trashing it"...

5) Don't know, as I keep my cars for ages & don't care about that.

6) Depending on your location & the police there, I got let off with just warnings by the police while driving this car plenty of times. & no cop who have pulled me over ever mentioned about defects (even the ones that ended up writing me a speeding ticket didn't comment on defects & such)...

honestly theres to many skylines out the with 90,000 to 150,00km and there 15yo.

I dont know no-one is honest these days.

i would compare the km's to the actual wear and tear of the car and see if it matches up,leaks,compression,ect.

and if its been thrashed you would go to test drive it and it would run like a dog and have sounds banging outta of it i would assume.

When i got my 33 ten years ago she had 67000 on the clock,

yeah sure.Allso every one i checked had similar ks.

I know have 330000 ks an there genuine.

Don't believe the odo,just have a good look at the condition inside an out.

At the end of the day, if you are willing to buy a car that is nice to drive but will usually have pretty average fuel economy (and run in premium unleaded), is at the age where the reliability if some parts (like coils, etc) is starting to come into question, you pay higher insurance and get more police attention, then go for it. They are nice cars, they are nice to drive, etc, but there are plenty of better options if the car is to be used as a daily drive and running costs are a concern to you.

In my current situation i wouldn't even consider a skyline. My choice is a high km commodore. I do 125kms a day, so an auto lounge chair that gets better fuel economy than a skyline, can run on whatever cheap fuel i see and is as reliable as they come is the perfect choice for me.

Why Buy a skyline?

The joy of owning one, each time you see it parked in the drive you smile. wash it and still smile. Then you drive it and you will never wonder why you asked.

With any car you have to service it and if you modify find yourself a good tuner that can take care of the lot.

I have found plenty of help on the forums by reading and reading. I have had more trouble with the wifes focus than the skyline, if you love the car kms dont mean much its about condition so get it checked before purchase then change the belts.

But I don't get why everyone has cop troubles with these cars. After driving mine for over a year (daily driver), the only time I have been pulled over was when I turned onto a street with a defect station.

Maybe It's just the 2 more doors?

Every piece of logic and pragmatism dictates that you should not buy these cars, as Mad082 has, and will tell you and everyone (just a quiet observation :D).

But once you're set on a Skyline, it takes a lot to change your mind.

There are shiploads of reasons to not buy a skyline but they vanish like smoke compared to the one reason why you should,

Your heart tells you to.

To the realists, pragmatists, economists, gof**kyaselves.

The very name SKYLINE evokes images of the winfield car decimating all on the mountain, hakosuka's screaming like banshees, Well modded gtst's boosting through the tunnels, Roundabouts that look like straights. boys dragging their butts to school having their day lifted by the sight of a well modded car cruisin by. The condescending look from the square generation As a 1/4 throttle take off leaves the commo floundering. The pride when you cruise with your clubmates and people break their necks to look.

As an older car a skyline can still hold its head high in terms of bang for buck, A good one can do anything most of the newer offerings can and then some. Fuel economy is irelevant, who buys a high performance car and crys about the bowser, You're doing it wrong if you do.

Cost of ownership is largely dependant on you. A basicly stock skyline is a very reliable car, A modded version is as reliable as you make it. You skimp you pay. Do it right its fine. Parts cost is more than reasonable and with the network around the country there is a plethora of good used parts on hand at stupidly low prices making owning and maintaining a skyline even easier.

The real question to my mind is not wether you should buy a skyline or not but which model should you buy.

They are an awesome car to own and can have fun at the track with them. They have been driven hard but then again so have most older imports. Cops have pulled me over a couple of times and can't defect me cause the car is legal. Once you own one you will see how the positives out weigh the negatives.

2) Insurance is a dog, If you want something fast pay for it

3) Car thieves LOVE these cars, Security

4) They've all been thrashed hard, Not as hard as Im thrashing mine

5) They're old and hard to re-sell, Not interested in selling, I would part it out it if I didnt want it any more.

6) Cops will pull you over to try and give you a yellow sticker everywhere you go, Not me, mines engineered and Im old, and I also dont have shiny wheels, stupid useless body kit, or break the road rules, I track it or go to the drags like grown ups do.

I got mine because I wanted a sporty 2 door.

I modded mine mine because I wanted it to go fast and go around corners.

As for price and insurance, who cares, I dont, if you want something fast pay for it, if not by a Falcodoore or Camry.

Euro cars tried to ignore them, condescend them and spurn them. In the end, they were forced to admire them. Why? Well for starters, Nissan Motor Co. car design and quality control was second to none. Did you know that the 1600 has a reinforced firewall; that in a front end collision, the engine will be pushed below the car? That its rallying prowess can be credited in part to its rear independent suspension with semi-trailing arms?

So ultimately, as you consider buying a GTR as many of us aspire to, remember that there is pedigree there which most car companies around the globe are envious of.

This. I didn't like skylines at first and initially thought they were hoon mobiles and big square rattle buckets... until my my friend let me drive his R34 GTT.

Skylines are somewhat unique to itself. It's not common like S15's, pulsars etc; not rare like Rolls Royce, just sitting in the perfect spot in the middle. The first time I gave a thumbs up to a random 34, ended up cruising for a good 30 mins side by side and that feeling you get in the moment :yes:

Since my first accident, I've been told so many times to get a shitty Corolla but I just can't bring myself to it. Even when I have a family and need a bigger car, that's what the Sedan Skylines are there for :)

If you are asking the question "Why buy a Skyline?" in the first place then it probably isn't the car for you. A car enthusiast buys a car because he/she feels passion for it. You overlook the negatives because of the way it makes you feel. I know the plastic trim on a VL wagon looks like it was thrown together by a blind monkey with no spacial awareness, I know that a VL wagon handles like a submarine tied to a cliff face and takes a whole bunch of work before it will handle anything like a sports car. Does that make me want another type of car, at all, ever to replace it.... hell no. No other car I have owned or driven makes me feel the way a VL wagon does. If you don't feel that way about a Skyline then keep looking.

Alternatively you could just ignore everything I have said and buy one and then keep it or not depending on whether you like it or not. Hardly one of the most risk laden decisions you will make in your life.
