Just Got My R34 Xenon Hid's Defected.

Badben your sig say's you drive a 32 GTR. You mustn't do much night driving.

Get any modern car behind an old R32 at night and the 32 driver is driving in his own shadow.

Unfortunately their headlamp design is 20+ years old.

Add the sad wiring design and you've got poor lights, especially on low beam.

But fitting 6500+ HID's is just asking for trouble from the law who can pick the way overblue colour a mile off.

And what driver wants to be blinded by road sign reflection from his your own lights.

Stay with 4300 max. on low beam only.

R31 projectors are better than R32 ones!

I have 4300K in my 32, make sure you aim the lights properly (should be juust below horizontal, as the car is low).

Heaps of glare, but that's just poor projector design to begin with.

I'm in the process of going back to halogens, going to test out a few bulbs.

BTW, if you have reflectors, I hope you're not using aftermarket HID kit. 'Blue Power' halogens work well.

The factory R34 HID's have a nice clean light cut-off, they don't dazzle at all. If you stick to 4300K bulbs and leave the level adjustment to the lowest setting you're not likely to ever get any unwanted attention.

That sux bro - I'm in the middle of putting GTR HID's in my ER34 :\ hope the same doesn't happen to me. On that note, if anyone has done this before can you let me know - i'd like to run a couple things by you as I'm having trouble.

I know this thread is a bit old so apologies for necro posting but everywhere I search I see people repeating the same "must have auto levelling" line.

However, from the relevant ADR:

Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 13/00 - Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other than L-Group Vehicles) 2005

6.2.6.2.1. In the case where a headlamp levelling device is necessary to satisfy the requirements of paragraphs 6.2.6.1.1. and 6.2.6.1.2., the device shall be automatic.



6.2.6.2.2. However, devices which are adjusted manually, either continuously or non‑continuously, shall be permitted, provided they have a stop position at which the lamps can be returned to the initial inclination defined in paragraph 6.2.6.1.1. by means of the usual adjusting screws or similar means.



These manually adjustable devices must be operable from the driver's seat.



Continually adjustable devices must have reference marks indicating the loading conditions that require adjustment of the dipped-beam.



The number of positions on devices which are not continuously adjustable must be such as to ensure compliance with the range of values prescribed in paragraph 6.2.6.1.2. in all the loading conditions defined in Annex 5.



For these devices also, the loading conditions of Annex 5 that require adjustment of the dipped-beam shall be clearly marked near the control of the device (see Annex 8).

Of course this doesn't automatically mean the R34's xenons are legal but at first glance they seem to meet the basic requirements of levelling (not sure about specifics like max. adjustments etc.) There is definitely wiggle room with regards to levelling requirements.

If I'm incorrect on any of this please let me know.

My car is equipped with it so I think that would be the bare minimum. Also have been told that there needs to be "washers" for the headlights, incase the dust can dazzle oncoming drivers..

Came across this thread looking for headlight parts for my R34. Agree that washers are required too, was just pointing out that lack of auto leveling isn't necessarily a reason for being defected :happy: .

Fair enough if that's the case..were these cars coupes or sedans? It just seems a bit odd because according to Nissan data, xenons + adjusters went hand in hand together and were standard equipment on the coupes, OPTIONAL package for certain sedans (see links below). That would lead me to believe any xenon cars without adjusters were not factory xenons, i.e. xenons were fitted afterwards by the owner (aftermarket kits or swapped with OEM xenon headlights), or with switches taken out (duno why somone would do that though).. who knows. But of course I could be totally wrong as I'm relying on the accuracy of nissan's own data.. :)

Edit: Series 2 page on the same website doesn't state risers with the xenons, not sure if just not mentioned out actually removed from the car. Have seen series 2 with the switch though

i thought it was pretty obvious for a qualified person to be able to tell if it's HID or not. if you look behind the lights in the engine bay its totally different

The ballasts are also easily visible if you look from the middle where the Grille is towards the bottom of the lights, sticking out quite clearly

Philips 85122 is 4300K, be careful of ebay ones, most are fake. You can get 4300K from ebay as well for about $20 each. Alignment is usually slightly out on those ebay ones. The 85122 gave a better cutoff and slightly better spread on my headlights (not OEM, Morimoto projectors).\

It's pretty easy to tell whether your headlights are HID or not. Colour, warm up, sharp cut-off, blue cut-off line (which is what dumb arses running 8,000-10,000K bulbs want in their halogen reflectors).

Ahhh... Guess that wouldn't work then....

When I first bought my car (car was complied back in 2004 when compliance was strict), my headlights were converted to H1, ballast taken out, globe cover has a hole drilled to wire in the H1. But i eventually bought a pair of stock Xenon headlights. I think nowadays, you'd have to be real unlucky to get done for HID's... Unless you have some blinding 10000k purple HID's lol

I've seen way to many blinding blue/purple headlights on the roads to think the police aren't doing much. A factory set will hardly get picked on, unless the officer didn't really like you or your car. I've been through a couple of RBTs with my HIDs and they didn't even give it a second look (4300K, projectors, properly aligned so it doesn't hit them in the face like half the cars in Sydney).

Nothing beats OEM HIDs though. Takes like 5 seconds to warm up, and you get a nice white, non-ricer light with even spread and a nice cut-off.

I love my bi-xenons though.

    • Great info @tidi0x  Will definitely be handy for others and maybe me if I decide to keep the shit box H pattern.
    • Bumping this up one last time.... I wanted to follow up on the clutch slave issue. I realized that what the issue comes down to is the pocket is flat milled, and the cylinder does not want rest flat. So in order to mount it correctly you will need to make a spacer for the fingers so the cylinder is floating. I took two plates of aluminum, drilled some holes and was good. I did still need to make the relief cuts in the bell housing, as even with the spacer the bleed section still interferes. The OE bell housing the mounting holes are raised from the housing.       
    • If the event in USA goes ahead will be interesting as it seems the rules will get more cars over here. Apparently the track is laguna seca too. Yeah s15, if I get a the lower dash trims, centre console and change front cross member to standard LCA position will fit clubsprint. See how rules are as i would rather do complete widebody than a bolt on flare to run the 295 with proper clearance.
    • If the car is legal height I can't see it being an issue. Found a thread on reddit that might offer some insight.   I got a ticket from a copper in QLD for my S15 being too low. They had this wheel thing on a stick that they put under the car and it hit my exhaust. Anyhow went to an exhaust shop to get the exhaust tucked up/hung a little higher and I wound the coilovers up a smidge. Don't think I even had to go back to the police station unlike when I got defected for having a carbon bonnet when I brought the S15 from the ACT to QLD and had to replace it and then rock up at a police station and have a yougish female officer who knew nothing about cars confirm that I had changed bonnets. Should have just painted the carbon bonnet yellow to match the rest of the car lol
    • Id like to race in the US i think alot of those track would suit me   For the s15? Youd be stuck between club sprint and the new Open Am wouldnt you depending on how much interior you have left in
