l_uk3y
Hey guys Just a quick queory on what most people are using to remove their oil filters, as well as do you remove anything from the engine bay before they take it out. Whilst ive changed my oil filter without any issues in the past. This time round it seems completely stuck in place, my oil filter wrench has bent whilst trying to undo it and I just seem to be cutting my hands apart because I cant get good enough access and keep scraping on things. This is in an R33 gts-t. I NEED SMALLER HANDS. Cheers. Little
jeez that doesn't sound right! For next time; get a Drift brand filter as they actually have a metric socket on their head... if you can't get em out with a socket set; then something is seriously wrong... As for your current situation i'm not sure sorry.... maybe spray the damn thing with WD40 then run the engine till its hot and loosened? I don't really know.. SMOKEYV35
Assume oil is empty from the block - get newspaper down under the filter, long screw driver and a BFH (big hammer ;-)) and smash screw driver through one side of the filter and out the other. Twist off. Not my favorite way - but I've been where you are before and it works. scotty nm35
Multi grips can work well, or a better filter wrench. The screwdriver through the side as a worst case. I don't use Drift filters anymore due to bad experiences but the K+N ones are cheap and have a similar hex adapter on the top... l_uk3y
lol. I bent my filter wrench. cuz i needed a slight angle to have any movement. Generally use Ryco filters in all my cars. Might have a look in the shops tommorow and see if theres a better looking one then the flimsy thing I have now.. Haha I could imagine getting myself in a lot of strife trying to use a screwdriver. PN-Mad
By hand generally. I've just stopped putting them on stupid tight. At worst I need a rag to grip it. I've noticed that oil filters are much harder to get off hot than cold. Which sucks, because mechanics 101 says warm up oil before dropping it. If possible loosen it off a little cold before warming the oil up to drop it. Even when I found a filter that was too loose (and tightened it up) it still didn't drop any oil. Missileman
just note if you do screwdriver the filter, it's still going to filled with oil whether you have drained the sump or not, put down newspaper and have some rags handy. jiffo
I found these are very good, especially on the GTR where there's no room for a conventional type. Make sure it's well made, there's a lot of cheap stuff that simply won't do the job. Hadouken
I use 2 methods. Using a rubber dish washer glove and if that fails I hammer a screw driver through that biatch. GTR260
Don't do it up stupid tight in the first place and u wont have this problem. I find if u do it up as tight as u can with one bare hand is more than enough, no leaks and just as easy to undo next time! Just my 2 cents Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/413624-whats-your-fav-way-to-get-an-oil-filter-out/#findComment-6624461 Share on other sites

Not my favorite way - but I've been where you are before and it works. ^^ this is what i had to do on my GFs avalon, overtightened by a mechanic and i had to put a screwdriver through it as a last resort, luckily the filter is on the front of the block Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/413624-whats-your-fav-way-to-get-an-oil-filter-out/#findComment-6624569 Share on other sites
arsnic_apple
I usually use a glove, too hard to get anything else down there. mad082
I use different methods for different cars. My car is some of that non slip rubber matting and by hand, the missus car is the same, but sometimes requires the screwdriver trick because it's hard to get to. Mums car requires the screwdriver trick unless i have welders glove handy, due to the filter being under the exhaust manifold. BuuBox
I find swearing at it for a few minutes helps. +1 for not doing it crazy tight in the first place. Odium
Also make sure that if you do need to resort to bashing a screwdriver through the filter, don't do it low down enough that you're going to go directly into the threaded shaft that it screws onto. Akshunhiro
If you need tools to remove the oil filter, you're doing it wrong. Lube the seal, hand tight = easy removal. l_uk3y
I ended up buying the following tool from Supercheap for about $15. Needless to say. The angles fit in perfectly for the R33. Took longer to get it out of the plastic wrapper then it did to get the oil filter off. mad082
If you need tools to remove the oil filter, you're doing it wrong. Lube the seal, hand tight = easy removal. I go by this theory, but as i explained in my post above, sometimes getting them off by hand isn't possible because of position (such as being under a hit exhaust manifold). I only ever put them on by hand Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/413624-whats-your-fav-way-to-get-an-oil-filter-out/#findComment-6627523 Share on other sites
