Mate has a R32 GTR who's been stuffed around by doggy workshops to the point he has no GTR to drive.

He's looking at spending up to $20k on an engine or a rebuild, in all labour etc. Obviously looking for supreme reliability so no second hand parts unless they are obviously just as good as new. Would consider a full engine but ones like CRD's is well over the budget or need.

He only has a standard engine, so will need computer, fuel system, turbo's etc.

Suggestions?

Hey John - check this site for a package http://www.lewisengi...category9_1.htm

Saw it on a similar thread recently.

Maybe the $13k package. That will have left over bucks for aftermarket ECU, fuel pump etc..

Plus the out/in costs and consumables

Just a thought.

This guy does good work - would post it to you as a short block or put a head on (for extra) if you want:

Actually the Lewis Engines might be easier for you if the quality is there.

I would think he would want a australian (prob Can/Syd/Melb) builder with a strong rep for everyday engines. Prefer if the one place could do everything, drop car off, pick car up when done & tuned.

Or just give a listing of the parts and work cost that needs doing and he can source a builder himself.

The biggest issue with engine builders is the time they take, i have used a few different builders and most have taken up to 4 months to get the engine back.

Worth the wait hen u see theresults but still. Long time.

See if u can get an exchange engine i fthe wait is an issue

^^ See above.

Too often i see guys get screwed around on workshops who decide to take up 5-6 big builds at a time and work on each one when they have some spare time.

Its understandable that projects like this take time but some workshops over do it. Heck ive had a forged rebuild "drive in drive out" done in 3 weeks including modifications to the head, all machining, upgrade to my fuel system (pump, injectors etc). Most people are lucky if they get the same in 3 months !

I remember speaking to the owner of Lewis engines and at the time he said he can have the motor turned over in 3 weeks. Just ask him how busy he is. But yes workshops that take months coz they deliberately take on to much are f tards!

If your mate doesn't want to get stuffed around more I wouldn't recommend this builder.

Why's that? I am planning to get in touch with them sometime in the new year for a motor.. PM me if you don't want to say in public

Probably mixed up the -5's and -7's

-7 garretts @ 21psi 370 rwkw

tomei ARMS twins @14psi 330rwkw

single TO4Z garrett @18 psi 390 rwkw.

-5 garretts @21 psi 340awkw.

NOTE: I haven't used LEWIS. So it's not an endorsement, just seemed to fit the requirement.

CRD did my build and yeah over $20k. I'm extremely happy with the result.

Not so happy with other business issue things and elapsed time for the rebuild. But hey - you get that and you just have to work through it.

330awkws at 18 psi on -7's (ESP tuned)

Could ask ESP (Qbyn) to get a price, timframe and make a judgement call if your comfortable.

I haven't had one built there either (like most others they would subbie some of the work), however I get them to do all my other work.

Reasonable on price and have met all their commitments to me.

Was a differen't story a year or so ago. They just overbooked and under deliverd.

Changes in the shop staff has made a big difference in my opinion.

Not had a bad experience since. *touch wood*

About to go spend another $5k with them.

Good thread to read, and when spending 20k on an engine, have a few good talks to your tuner. No half an hour later he has a 20k job sitting on his lap.

Talk to the guy building the engine, ask how many Rb's he's built. Or if he's been rebuilding ford's forever..

The most helpful guy will be the bloke actually rebuilding it. *not the guy at the front desk selling you shit*

Do yourself a favour go direct to the guy your dealing with, don't get a workshop who gives the job to someone else. It will take longer in the end. and you may not *not saying you won't* be happy with the end result.

Just my few cents from experience. worth the hassle if you want quality results "you" are happy with.

Thanks for the replies. I'll let him decide where exactly he goes.

More after suggestions for the build in the way of parts and the work needed. The built engine of "lewis" for 13K was something that was good to read.

I'm sure people have spent around this amount for a rebuilt/new engine, how did it go, what would you do differently?

fark... i get the shits over 2 weeks... never Waited more than 3.

If I could do it again, I'd seriously think about running a motor with stock internals. Beat the crap out of it, blow it up, rinse, repeat.

Dealing with engine builders generally sucks, and people generally overbuild motors for no good reason. What do you truly get with a built motor? piece of mind?

    • Hey, it's a GT-R, it's just as significant a moment as mine😁 It's not ideal when things are uncertain; I'm the type of person that always has a set plan for things in life so being unsure of this plan puts me in a weird place mentally.
    • Hows your intake piping? Are you still running stock? Having in the stock AFM position would mean, if the BOV was shut/venting out, it'd create the almost stalling kind of effect right // "the rich pulse behaviour" due to MAF thinking air is flowing ? But this would be better than having the bov in the stock position + MAF on/just before cross over piping right?
    • Essentially, yes. Although I wouldn't put the AFM on the crossover pipe. I'd want to put it into what amounts to the correct size tube, which is more easily done in the intercooler pipework. I bought a mount tube for card style AFM that replaces the stock AFM - although being a cheap AliExpress knockoff, it had no flange and I had to make and weld my own. But it is the same length and diameter as the stock RB AFM, goes on my airbox, etc etc. I don't have a sick enough rig to warrant anything different, and the swap will take 5 minutes (when I finally get around to it and the injectors & the dyno tune).
    • So to summarise, the best thing to do is to move recirc to between turbo and IC, and maf on the crossover pipe. Meaning I'd need a recirc flange, drill a hole in the piping on turbo outlet area. And drill hole on crossover to fit/weld maf sensor? Either that or put the MAF on the turbo inlet right?  Is an aftermarket recirc/blowoff valve recommended? Do currently have family in Japan so could probably bring something back with maybe a cheeky lil SuperAutobacs run?
    • Yep, so far most have said that it looks like corrosion on the wall from piston not moving. Which then has probably damaged the oil rings and caused those vertical marks. The longest the engine was still after the rebuild, was the winter of 2018 - 2019, plus the boat trip to Japan. When I shipped the car, it had normal gas in the tank but before that winter pause, it had E85 in tank.  In any case, even if either one of those was the cause, it happened close to 6 years ago and the car has been driven something like 30 000kms after the fact. Again, apart from the plugs and the dip stick, there is nothing in the way the car runs that would indicate what has been going on in the engine. I am going to consult a shop and ask their opinion, what would be the best approach. I do have some access to a garage I could use to diagnose further myself, but time is very restrictive. Might end up buying another engine that could be used while this one is being remedied. Without pulling the head, it will be impossible to find out if it needs another bore, but here's to hoping a hone would suffice.  Goddamnit, I would really have preferred this not happening.
