I did heaps of research on this topic as I was keen on doing it, went in to a couple workshops and discussed everything. Seems either can be done, but its a give or take (someone with experience can hopefully chime in) as the VQ's werent built for FI. I would go S/C on stock internals and T/C on forged internals.From what Ive seen though, 400rwhp is really pushing it on stock rods (once again someone with experience can hopefully confirm this) Really depends how deep your pockets are and how far you want to push it. My opinion is S/C. But both can be done.

I have mixed responses from some local garages.half say turbo it half say supercharger would be better. I've been on Google for the past 3 weeks trying to see which one is better for me send its still 50/50. I'm leading towards s/charger. But it's a tough choice. I've been thinking the Gtm stage one s/charger. But they also have a turbo kit for around the same price. I've had turbo before I know what to expect. But on the brighter side either one of these is going to happen in next month :)

If built or stock engine, I'd personally go with one of the new GTM S/C kits. The one with the S/C our driver's side of the engine. Lovely and logical setup.

Easiy to wind the boost up on a built engine to - just use a smaller pulley :)

but if i had to make a decision off the cuff, I'd go supercharger.

S/C PROS:

a) they sound sick

b) in a heavy car like the V-series, bottom end torque to get the party started is key - s/c has this in spades, turbo does not.

c) easier to bolt on/bolt off. If you get done for emissions, or if you need to sell the car - you can part out within a day. Turbo you've got to deal with manifolds, loads of plumbing etc.

d) from what i've seen, the kits avail are bolt on with a piggyback ECU in most cases. No expensive standalone management required - turbo might require this to get the most out of it.

S/C CONS:

a) the noise isn't for everyone - if you do long distances or have nagging missus, the constant 'jet whine' might get old after a few hours on the freeway.

b) Engine drag - steer clear of the top mounted screw type chargers - they don't fit without a bonnet, and the drag created for the power delivered is pretty dismal - thinking the Stillen for example. Pro-charger style much more efficient and look neater.

c) Not as stealthy - pro-charger tucked behind the headlight looks nice especially if painted black- but still never going to be as 'hidden' as a low mounted turbo. Your piping setup will make or brake though. I like stealthy setups, not flashy ones.

There is a s/c setup on zclub.com.au for about 3k which is very cheap - but does not come with management. Could be a good start though? Otherwise I've seen US built kits start around the 6k mark minus shipping and taxes, and the HKS one is around a 8k start.

Also, supercharged you can upgrade the exhaust system built for an N/A - bolt it on and get gains for the supercharger - but if you ever remove the s/c you can still keep the exhaust in place.

Where as turbo, you'd have to get a custom system made at least up to the cat's. Remove the turbo, and that all has to come off with it.

Just a small thing - but take it from a guy who has had to remove a turbo system from an n/a motor TWICE to get it through EPA. Not fun.

Thanks for the input guys. Been living in G35 driver. I'm now in between vortech and Gtm. I've been quoted 10g for a vortech system drive away. Waiting to hear back on someone else about the Gtm .

Two very different units. The GTM uses a highly efficient Rotrex unit which is much quieter than the Vortech/Procharger. Also a much nicer install IMO

before you make your mind up, Check out Soho Motorsports Turbo kit, quality stuff!

wonder what an LSX conversion would cost........slightly O/T.

Alot lol, in the process of this conversion, so far spent 9k including engine & gearbox. still have alot more to spend.

Alright mate, just make sure you do exercise caution if you are going to go ahead with it. Considering he is a private seller across the other side of the world, you'd wanna hope it comes with everything he says it does.

my auto v35 with hks turbo kit made more hp at lower boost than the vortech s/c kit did on an auto 350z. like 25kw more at 1.5psi less

use uprev osiris to retune stock ecu as it will save $$$ or go haltech or MEGASQUIRT ECU if you want a/m. pm if you want any more info. i prefer turbo but maybe thats coz i got one

regarding the supercharger sound, you can always upgrade to an electronic clutch pulley so that the s/c can be turned off...

i had this setup on a previous car, with the SC constantly running i got 250km from a tank of petrol, with it switched off i got 400km. it also had an automatic setting with a vacuum operated switch that would automatically engage the the SC when the sensor detected a certain level of vacuum (or acceleration load) within the inlet manifold.

So at the switch on my dash, i could leave the SC and its noise on all the time.... turn the SC off to save fuel and kill the noise it made.... or have it kick in automatically .

    • Surely the merged entity will be called "Honda" given the relative company values. I've got to be honest, I don't understand how merging 2 companies that missed EVs (despite Nissan making the first mass produced one) will solve their problems
    • If you haven't bought the ECU yet, I would strongly consider buying a modern ECU. Yes it is very easy to setup and tune, however it is lacking many of the features of a modern ECU. The pro plug in is something like 10 or 12 years old now? Can't remember exactly but it is very dated now. In that time the Elite was released and now we have the Nexus platform.  I would strongly consider not buying the ECU that is 3 generations old now (especially as it isn't a cheap ECU!).

    • Sorry I should have been more clear with the previous post.  The block is a sanding block - picture something like this https://motorguard.com/product/motor-guard-bgr161-bgr16-1-rigid-psa-sanding-block-2-5-8-x-16/ The guide coat is the paint It's two separate things I was talking about, there is no "block guide coat". 
    • Maybe more accurately, you aren't just dulling the existing paint, you are giving the new paint something to 'grab on to'. By sanding the existing paint, you're creating a bunch of pores for the new paint to hook on to.  You can lay new paint over existing paint without sanding it, might last a year or two then sad times. The paint will peal/flake off in huge chunks. By sanding it, the new paint is able to hang onto it and won't flake off.  Depends on the primer you are using. When you buy your paint, as the paint supplier what grit of sand paper to use before you lay down the primer.  Use whatever you like as a guide coat. Pick a colour that really stands out in contrast to the paint. So say your sanding/painting a currently white car, using a black guide coat would work well. You very lightly lay the black guide coat down, then as you sand the car with the large block, all the high spots and low spots will stand out as the black paint is sanded off (or isn't sanded off).  When you buy your paint, hit up your supplier for recommendations for what paint to use for a guide coat if you're unsure what would work well with your setup.
