While I'm saving up for a full re-spray & colour change I need to do something to protect my R33 from rust, and make it a bit less emarrassing to drive...

I've got a number of paint chips on the passenger side, an odd coloured spoiler (both front & rear), and a large high-flowed patch on the driver's side door. So I'm aiming to get some colour-matched (wine-red) 2pak paint and blend the obvious flaws away from the casual glances, and then put on a final clear coat over the whole car.

I've got a friend who used to be a auto-sprayer and he's willing to spray it for free, so I'm just left with prep & paint costs.

So what do I use for prep if want to cut the clear coat to remove any minor scratches? And what do I use in the areas to be blended (filling paint chips & preping the high-flow)?

why dont you invest some money and have the thing whole exterior sandblasted, shouldnt cost more then a couple of hundred dollars. then all you have to do is bog what you need to bog, use putty primer on that and your on your way to having a magical paintjob.
