Advice For 'stock' 30Dett Turbo And Ecu Choice Please!

im in the process of building a 30dett for an autech stagea and i know sweet f**k all about turbos.

so, im after opinions on what to use. the engine is being built as close to stock as possible and will be a daily driver and i dont intend to push it at all. angry overtaking is about the worst of it. the bottom end is a RIPS block that i picked up second hand (but never used) and its the basic block with stock internals. i dont intend to get anywhere near its full potential at this point in time. Basically, if nissan ever made an RB30dett, i want mine to be what it would have been.

so, i had originally been advised to just keep standard turbos but the more i search here, the more people say its a bad idea. can anyone confirm this even in a 'stock' application?

if they're no good, what would be the best replacement? i want to stay with twins (unless a single+manifold+lines would just work out cheaper/better) and again, what nissan would have fitted if they built it. would love to use stock dumps, lines, manifold if possible.

next point is that im trying to keep costs down. this doesn't mean i want cheap shit that will break in 6 months, im just trying to spend as little as possible on good gear. example being new stock turbos from another car or well-known second hand items.

next question is ecu. whats the best thing to run it safely and reliably? once its tuned and running happily, it will be left alone so something basic to run it but keep it alive forever would be great.

advice please!

Nistune at least - you want it tunable. Unless you are able to lower the mounts you may have trouble connecting the stock exhaust - can anyone confirm one way or the other? Get a new fuel pump if your current one is the original one - it will be getting old and prone to failure. Get a pair of adjustable cam gears - a must to get it to run properly.

ok so cam gears, no probs. exhaust isn't stock but it can wait either way until it's back in and running. likewise for the fuel pump, agree it's essential but at this point im going to focus on getting the engine together and back in the car. finances have just taken a hit and i'm building a car trailer at the moment as well so for now, i think it's choose turbos, bolt the thing together and drop it back in the hole as that'll take me long enough.

has anyone had any experience on the N1 rebuilds on ebay? how would these go? they're a bit closer to my budget and have warranty unlike second hand units.

They are cheap for a reason.

They are 1980s old laggy tech. Turbos are the most important selection really, cut corners there you'll regret it everytime you drive it

i might do a thread eventually, cant be bothered right now. havent touched it in a while either... million things on the go.

i dont have a power goal (no one ever believes me when i say that but it's true!) just a stock 3L car. at the moment im planning to finish the build, enjoy it for a few months then sell it. would like to spend as little as possible without it being shit or unreliable, the next owner can go nuts with it instead. stupid life getting in the way.

turbo budget, let's say 2k max but would like it to be closer to 1. may have to wait a little while to buy too, also still have to assemble the damn thing. depending what happens in the next few weeks, it may get put on the backburner again until some other stuff gets done. any/all advice still welcome!

    • Great info @tidi0x  Will definitely be handy for others and maybe me if I decide to keep the shit box H pattern.
    • Bumping this up one last time.... I wanted to follow up on the clutch slave issue. I realized that what the issue comes down to is the pocket is flat milled, and the cylinder does not want rest flat. So in order to mount it correctly you will need to make a spacer for the fingers so the cylinder is floating. I took two plates of aluminum, drilled some holes and was good. I did still need to make the relief cuts in the bell housing, as even with the spacer the bleed section still interferes. The OE bell housing the mounting holes are raised from the housing.
    • If the event in USA goes ahead will be interesting as it seems the rules will get more cars over here. Apparently the track is laguna seca too. Yeah s15, if I get a the lower dash trims, centre console and change front cross member to standard LCA position will fit clubsprint. See how rules are as i would rather do complete widebody than a bolt on flare to run the 295 with proper clearance.
    • If the car is legal height I can't see it being an issue. Found a thread on reddit that might offer some insight.   I got a ticket from a copper in QLD for my S15 being too low. They had this wheel thing on a stick that they put under the car and it hit my exhaust. Anyhow went to an exhaust shop to get the exhaust tucked up/hung a little higher and I wound the coilovers up a smidge. Don't think I even had to go back to the police station unlike when I got defected for having a carbon bonnet when I brought the S15 from the ACT to QLD and had to replace it and then rock up at a police station and have a yougish female officer who knew nothing about cars confirm that I had changed bonnets. Should have just painted the carbon bonnet yellow to match the rest of the car lol
    • Id like to race in the US i think alot of those track would suit me   For the s15? Youd be stuck between club sprint and the new Open Am wouldnt you depending on how much interior you have left in
