Really didn't expect Mercedes to win in those conditions! But they didn't seem to have any more tyre deg than any other team. Looks like the effect of the new tyres was greater than that of the hot conditions. Some good tracks for the Mercedes coming up too - Spa next, Monza not far away... Vettel is still in a commanding championship position, but Kimi and Fernando should be getting very nervous about Hamilton after Mercedes demonstration of their rear tyre performance in that heat. Hamilton wasn't messing around intraffic either - pretty impressive. The pass on Button after the first (iirc) pitstop set up that win. Vettel came out behind Button after his stop as well and couldn't clear him until Button's tyres went off.

Those new tyres are bad news for Lotus. They still go well in the heat, but their hot conditions advantage over the rest of the field seems to be diminished. Grosjean was probably the fastest of the front runners if he could have got past Vettel I think he would have caught the Merc pretty quick. He was a bit hard done by with that penalty. Sure he went all four wheels over the line, but that's only about a foot or two wider than the normal line in that corner. Not exactly over the top when you have another car squeezing you out, despite him having his nose well in front. But I guess rules are rules and if they don't permit people completing a pass "off the circuit", they had to penalise him. In my books, that was a very good, gutsy pass. And I'm not exactly his biggest fan.

The difference for Vettel is that his pass on Button in that same corner was his pass was already completed by the apex because he got up the inside. He didn't complete the pass off the circuit, but was he only able to make that stick because he didn't slow enough to make the corner? To me, I think that should be a penalty as well. If you launch it up the inside to make a pass but come into the corner too hot to stay on the track, you should have to give the spot back, or be penalised. To me that's worse, because he didn't have anyone inside him squeezing him wide, he was simply using more of the track to gain an advantage. If Grosjean stuck to the normal exit line, I reckon Massa would have hit him...

Cracker of a race. Particularly for a place that's supposed to be next to impossible to pass on. Again it shows we don't need DRS - the zones were too short to do anything here and the race was all the better for it, imo.

Yep cracker of a race. Good to see Tool A: fk up, B: lose.

But then this. Too much Homo, too much.

In an emotional interview, triumphant but heartbroken racing driver Lewis Hamilton on Sunday dedicated his victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix to his former girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger.

After describing how he prayed and found himself in a "mellow place" before the race that freed his mind to focus on winning, he admitted that he had been thinking only of Scherzinger, the former Pussycat Doll who he dated for five years.

"Winning is just the greatest, of course," said Hamilton, whose victory was his first since leaving McLaren to race for Mercedes this year and the 22nd of his career.

"But I feel like...the thought on my mind through the whole race was of someone who is special to me and I wanted to dedicate it to her..."

Asked if that person was Scherzinger, he nodded.

Also , watching replay...Vettel up the inside of Button into T4 ran all four wheels over the line on exit...same corner and thing and Romain got dicked

It's Karma being a bitch to the French after the Balestre / Prost rubbish all those years ago.

Ferrari have been fined after the DRS on Fernando Alonso's car was activated illegally during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

A statement from technical delegate Jo Bauer read: "After the race DRS activation data from car #3 was analysed. It was found that the driver has activated the adjustable bodywork in three occasions when he was more than one second behind another car.

"As this is not in conformity with article 27.5b of the 2013 Formula 1 sporting regulations I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration."

However, a setting error by the team was to blame and the Italian outfit were hit with a €15,000 fine.

Romain Grosjean has been hit with a 20-second post-race penalty for hitting Jenson Button's McLaren while attempting to overtake him at the chicane during theHungarian Grand Prix.

The penalty, issued in lieu of a drive-through because it was applied after the race, does not cost Grosjean sixth place because he was 21.524s clear of Button on the road.

Red Bull is considering Fernando Alonso as a potential team-mate to Sebastian Vettel for 2014.

It has emerged that secret talks took place between the Spaniard's management and Formula 1's champion team at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

High level sources claim that the notion Red Bull should consider Alonso as an option for 2014 emerged in a conversation that took place between the Ferrari driver's agent Luis Garcia Abad and team boss Christian Horner at the Hungaroring on Friday.

Both Ferrari and Abad insist, however, that the talks he had with Horner were only related to a potential future for Carlos Sainz Jr, who he also represents.

Horner said that while Alonso was being looked at, he was also unsure about the exact contractual situation, despite suggestions of break clauses.

"Is he available?" said Horner. "I don't know. You ask him."

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali claimed that Alonso was firmly locked down at the team - but acknowledged that the outfit had to improve its current performance to please its driver.

"First of all we have a contract with him," said Domenicali. "No doubt, Fernando is an asset for the team.

nando and seb in one team?

this one is for ivan.

Pirelli is considering plans to widen the rear Formula 1 tyres for next year in a bid to ensure they can cope with the demands of the new 2014 engines.

F1's tyre supplier is pushing to finalise the specification of next year's rubber, which will have to deal with the increased torque of the 1.6-litre V6 turbo power units.

An early season request for teams to supply data on the performance figures of the 2014 cars only drew a response from five teams - which has left Pirelli concerned about the exact targets it needs to aim for.

With Mercedes believed to be worried about how tough the new engines will be on tyres, Pirelli has been asked to consider making rear tyres wider and larger in diameter.

This idea has been floated with the teams, but many of the leading outfits are not keen on the move as it would lead to an expensive redesign of suspension concepts.

With the teams at loggerheads over what should be done, AUTOSPORT has learned that the FIA has now stepped in and demanded that each outfit supplies the 2014 performance information to Pirelli in the next few days.

Only once it has the data available can Pirelli then decide on what needs to be done for next year.

My god ..get over it Lewis. The thing was on-off for the 5 years anywa. Plus she is coming up to her used by date as I think she is only 12 months younger than me! MOVE THE FARK ON!

I am not sure the tyre change is the whole reason why cars inc Merc are coping better. We have seen it each year that the teams get teh setup right as the races roll by. But no realy surprise that the tyre durability is probably better.

For Merc, I think it was the tyres more than any other factor. Look at the last GP in similar, though not quite as hot, conditions. There's nothing gradual about that improvement. The reports from the YDT at Silverstone were that these new tyres were more durable in their performance. So i don't think its a coincidence

Agree about Lewis - he needs to man up a bit. I've been trying hard to give him a fair go since he moved to Merc, but he doesn't make it easy to like/support him. Out of the car anyway. He drove brilliant yesterday.

Yeah he drove brilliantly then ruined it all by blubbing like a school girl. Some HTFU is needed. Much prefer Alonso's my personal life is none of your fkn business approach to it all.

The frist word that comes to mind when listening to Lewis is "glum".

I thought most of it was Rosberg winning two GPs...but seems he is pining for a cougar. Man, he was in Budapest with a 4 week break. If I had the power of Lewis rather than being a broke ass, fat-balding engineer when I was in Budapest I would have had an even better time!

You have been able to see though the frist word that comes to mind is "glum".

You say that like being a broke, over weight and balding engineer is a bad thing.

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
