C34 Stagea Series 2 (Factory Rear Wheel Drive) Auto To Manual Conversion Help

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I was wondering if anybody had any information surrounding an auto to manual conversion on the above car. As you have probably gathered, I have a C34 Stagea, S2 RWD Auto that i'm going to convert to a manual. I have a complete R34gtt manual sitting right next to it so have all the bits i'll need (I hope)

Question is:

Has anybody done this before or knows how much plug/play is involved. Having seen lots of auto/manual swaps before on S/R bodies, i'm hoping that it's a case of dropping of the auto box/torque converter/flywheel. Removing the front half of the prop (off the car, obviously) removing the box wiring then replacing it with the R34GTT stuff. (along with fitting clutch pedals/cylinders etc)

There is also a bit of wizardry around the ECU that means I have to trick it into thinking it's in drive?

I can find loads of info on converting 4WD cars from auto to manual, but nothing on the RWD and no trace of anything S2 specific :-(

Cheers

Chris

Search dude. Its been covered and then covered again. For the last 6 yrs. awd and rwd doesnt make a difference.

Thanks for the response mate, but with the greatest of respect to you - i think your incorrect.

I have done quite a bit of searching and from what I can tell, you are right about all S1/S2 4wd cars being the same. But from the stuff I have read they all seem to have 4 plugs terminating at the fuse box. Mine doesn't - it only seems to have 2.

This is what the wiring guides on the thread here look like:

Okay,

So this is what i have currently.

The S2 Stagea auto transmission loom looks very similar (at the engine end) to the R34GTT manual transmission loom. However, while one of the plugs is the same type (blocky 8 pin) the pinouts seem different. The second connector, which is a blocky 4 pin on the R34 loom, is an oval 8 pin on the stagea.

Can anybody point me in the direction of a pinout? Or even just tell me what's what on the loom?

Stagea looks like this (on the gearbox loom)

Big Block

You don't need all the auto stuff. All you need is the wiring from the speed sensor which should be pretty obvious and the reverse signal (should be able to find that). Then you need to short out the lock that stops you starting in gear (can't help you there) and when you shift to a handbrake take the lead for the warning light off the old one.

I dont mean to sound disresectful. but if you cant find the wiring needed for neutral, reverse and start inhibitor with a test lamp, you better find a professional to do the conversion. Ur plugs might be different but the proceedure to make it work is the same.

Yeah,

So thanks again for all the help...

Hopefully this thread will help people some other person with a Factory RWD series 2.

This is the wiring diagram

GearboxWiring.jpg

To get the reverse light, speedo and neutral switch working you'll need a RWD loom to go with the gearbox you're using. I used an R34 GTT gearbox that came with a loom and snipped the connectors that i needed off that and wired them into the Stagea auto gearbox loom. On the RB25 gearbox, the rear most sensor by the gear stick is the neutral switch and the next one forward towards slightly round the box is the reverse switch. Next one forward again is the speedo drive.

Other than that the conversion is actually very simple. A couple of points:

- R34 clutch pedal fits

- R34 Handbrake mechanism and cable does not fit (it's too short)

- R34 centre console does not fit (not even close)

- R34 prop shaft (front half) fits straight on no problems.

    • It was roughly 3.5 hours.    car went in around 11:00 and I was done around 2:30 He did the initial runs, install the BC and then Nistune install and tune.  The best part was sitting in the lobby and hearing the skyline on full throttle at the dyno 😂😂
    • Glad it all went smooth. How long did the tuning process take?
    • Yeah that was kind of the same feedback my tuner gave me.  the boost tee is until I can sort out my plan for the electronic boost controller and what I’d get, where I’d mount the dash etc.  I’m happy with this until I can figure it out. Not a big fan of the A-pillar gauges. I’d like to get a clean install of the boost gauge - something digital like GFB.  Something like that might fit neatly where the ashtray is and look clean. I feel like replacing the OEM triple gauge is a bit extreme for a weekender like my skyline. And it’s not making crazy power to need all the additional sensors/gauges.
    • I'm about to swap my box to Tremec T56 Magnum F & initially thinking of re-using my DCS twin plate (can get it re centred for the bigger spline) but it's been called out the box will be noisy (rattle) as the clutch is unsprung.  So I'm doing as much research as possible. I'm not so worried about holding the power as I'll go the track version which on paper will hold the maybe 1000hp I make. It's the longevity I worry about. DCS told me they don't use a sprung centre as it's just something that can break. The uni clutch has a very complicated sprung centre. Any one had or heard about any issues with it failing? Thanks in advance.
    • Auto is at least 10% (from my real, actual experience with different torque converters and manual on the same setup) ~185rwkw at 11.6psi (peak!) is entirely what one would expect without a FMIC or anything else on the intake, it does bleed off towards the higher RPM so it's what, 9psi there? Note: There is nothing that can be done about this with a manual boost tee. If you want to hold it steady and gain more top end, well - You will need electronic boost control.....
