Shoota_77
None of that stuff above is painted by the way. That's how it comes up after the aqua blasting, it looks like it's been painted. It's amazing. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/414784-shootas-r33-gt-r-rb3026/page/3/#findComment-6769865 Share on other sites
NYTSKY
Care to elaborate on the process? Where it was done, cost etc etc Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/414784-shootas-r33-gt-r-rb3026/page/3/#findComment-6769904 Share on other sites
Shoota_77
Sure. It's a super fine version of sand blasting. Most of the blasting material is water which means it can be used on the super soft metals. The guy then adds various different elements to the water to alter the abrasive effect. He uses a lot of the normal blasting medium (sand, walnut, etc). He normally hits it with the harsher abrasive first to clean it up then finishes it off with the fine stuff to create the like new finish. I had 2 rocker covers, 2 cam gear covers, 4 exhaust manifold heat covers, 2 engine mounts, coolant and oil hard lines, inlet manifold plenum plus a few other random bits and it cost me $125. The guy is here in Melbourne. His company is Auld Tyme Auto Resto Services and Wayne is the man to speak to. His number is 0416310662. Very nice guy and even picks up and drops off if he's in the area. Highly recommend his work! NYTSKY
Seems like a good result and certainly very cheap. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/414784-shootas-r33-gt-r-rb3026/page/3/#findComment-6770159 Share on other sites
Shoota_77
So after about 7 or 8 weeks wait, my sexy, sexy slugs arrived- That's the positive side of things. Negatives? I had hand surgery last week to fix some thrashed ligaments in my fingers and thumb from old footy injuries. Suffice to say I'll be out of action for a while.. Might also be moving from Melbourne back to Shepparton soon which will be a bit of a speed hump as well. Until I get my 3 bay shed built with barn section in the middle to allow for a hoist........ can't wait. Be great to be 3 kms from DECA and a lot closer to Winton too!! r33_racer
Hooray for the pistons turning up! Not so much for the hand surgery.....does not look enjoyable! Coincidentally my old man just had surgery to fix his carpal tunnel syndrome in his right wrist. Apparently its quite common in mechanics and tradies who often use hand tools. Shunting spanners, ratchets and breaker bars with the palm of your hand to crack nuts/bolts is a primary cause! So there is something to be weary of in the future! Shoota_77
So officially moving back to Shepparton now. Gunna be a massive pain in my motivation. New job, renting house with no shed until new house/shed built, another baby on the way, it's all happening! Will need to try VERY hard to keep on track. Won't get anything done until after the move because of my hand surgery. Once shed is built and car is finished it will be awesome being back in Shepp. DECA, Winton, back roads! I'll be working as sales manager for Subaru, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Alfa, Fiat and Mercedes so if anyone needs a new car..... Shoota_77
Long time no post! Been busy with busted hand, moving from Melbourne to Shepparton, new job, new rental house, building new house, etc etc. Finally started on the car again last week. The engine should be finished the machining stage next week and then I just need to go and pick it all up then start bolting it together. This is all I've done lately- Started making the bolt ons- These, look pretty- Hopefully more to come soon. Shoota_77
Got a few photos of the machining process. Bore and hone of block, head ported a little bit, head machined for 1mm oversize valves, block drilled for RB26 headstuds, reliefs grounds for sump adapter allen head bolts, Hardblok up to bottom of lower welch plug holes plus a few other bits and pieces- Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/414784-shootas-r33-gt-r-rb3026/page/3/#findComment-6918297 Share on other sites
Shoota_77
Finally all of the machining work is done on my engine so I drove to Melbourne today to pick it all up. Set up the "operating theatre" ready for business- All the goodies- Pistons individually weight matched (blueprinted in other words) Oversized valves in- Tomei Poncams- Oil return galleries enlarged- Intakes opened and tidied up a bit- Exhaust ports opened up a bit- Spacer for timing belt tensioner- What all GT-R's should have had from factory.....- That's everything that the machinists have done, now it's my turn. Didn't waste too much time on it but gave the crankcase a bit of a tidy up- Also opened up the oil return galleries in the block to match the head gasket. The block opening is about 6mm smaller than the gasket which is just bloody stupid!- Also opened up the water galleries in the block as well. you can't really tell but I've done the main curved bore water galleries as well- That's all I got done today, still a bit more cleaning up and measuring before I start assembly. Sorry for the photo overkill! 1 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/414784-shootas-r33-gt-r-rb3026/page/3/#findComment-6955516 Share on other sites

Shoota_77
I had an SR20DET that I was going to put into my other 1200 but reallocated all the funds to the Skyline. I'll revisit that project again at some point. When I have money again. Ie. never! iruvyouskyrine
Great read mate, looks like it will be a very well rounded engine when its done. Great to see you doing it all yourself, would love to have the skillset that allows me to build my own engines!
