Does anybody have a part number? Found them online for $150 each (!) but I only suspect that it's wheel bearing (could be diff') and if I replace one, I need to replace both... not keen to spend $300 chasing a noise...

Make sure it's not tyre noise - I had a friend who went and bought a set of bearings for her 40th Anniversary R33 GTSt after I bet her (should have put money on it too) that it was her tyres. My sister had the same tyres on her car (Maxxis MA-Z1's) and they are noisy as f*ck! Workshop swapped wheels and tyres with an R32 GTR that they were also working on at the time, and it was much more quiet.

Get hold of the suspect wheel and give it a solid shake, you will soon find out. Wheel bearings sound like a little steam train in the corner of your car, with little or no associated shudder. I first heard mine as a growl at really low speed (walking pace or less). Still drove it back from Apollo Bay to Melbourne then back to Adelaide before I worried about it, by then it had diagnosed itself.....

When you go to buy the part, Just Jap. Why buy two?

The manual RS4V has the extra tang with the bolt hole for the handbrake talk to the guys on the phone.

Call Joe Versace at Wheelworx for the fitment of your shiny new part. Be accommodating. Win.

Ah so is that what the extra bolt in the bearing assembly is for (saw that in the pic in the workshop manual)

thanks guys... from your descriptions it sounds like it is tyre noise. I only really noticed it after I had new tyres fitted (maxxis MA-V1's) and previously I had had the Z1's which were noisy. It it more of a high-med pitch whine/dull roar which starts at probably about 60km/h so I guess it sounds more like road noise (although could be diff - but doesn't change between accelerate/coast)

Only thing which confuses me a bit is that it gets gradually louder when braking, and continues down to fairly low speed (about 20km/h) when you pull up. Nothing very load, but noticeable, and from the back of the car.

Have a listen to the clip in a thread I started not long ago, and compare if it sounds the same.

I too have maxxis MA-V1 tyres and the comment about low speed noise rings true. If you listen to the clip you'll notice a low frequency roar as I brake and come to a stop. My tyres are about 4-5 years old.

Thanks for the details Springsteen, feeling a little better about doing a short cruise up to Sydney soon :-) No play in the wheel bearings that I can tell.

That's great stuff John - I think mine sounds very similar; if anything yours is pretty quiet... but yeah same sort of dull roar when coming to a stop, I used to have bad road noise with the Max is MA-Z1s, seems with these Max is V1s it's similar.

Hahaha, what a coincidence - you just happen to have fitted the same/similar tyres!

Yeah I thought that was rather interesting. I do remember the Z1's being LOUD! So I have put the V1's down as being "moderately loud... a bit like a wheel bearing but at a slightly higher speed".

    • The MX5 has had some annoying rattles in both front doors over bumps So I installed fancy pants door bushings, which stopped all of the rattles with the windows up, but........with the windows down there was still rattles, so after some googling,  and a chat with MX5 Mania, I got some new door to glass weather seals, all the rattles, windows up, or down, are gone now Shout out to MX5 Mania, the weather seals were on sale, and when I head to Dural to pick the up they even fitted them for me for free I did see a "really" nice Blue NA sitting out front   and this Black NC PRHT that looked like it has sat in the sun for its whole life and never had a wash, the clear coat was non-existent, an it looked horrible, really horrible, but, it had a nice turbo kit with over 200kw, the thing went like a cut snake, bagging the rears through the gears and dosing like a champ 😍 But, as I've always stated, I am keeping my NC na, I'm happy with the current power the car makes In other news: MX5 Mania do a drive in drive out turbo kit, the only minor additional part recommended for boosting my car, as it sits now, is a oil cooler, and that bonnet vents are definitely required for track use Aftermarket version look a bit to "racecar" spec I wonder how Focus RS bonnet vents would look?????
