Thanks jeremy.. I read through it and still not convinced. Noone gave a definate reason as to why?? There were too many variables left unopen, and for me anyway, and as you would know, alot peer group posting without really facts as to why? The only conclusion I could figure, was Oil starvation, and perhaps boost above 1.5-6 bar?? But stil no hard facts, sure 2-3guys blew there's up, but I'm sure my tuners could blow my HKS 2530's in a day if they wanted to.. Dunno, me personally I'm still inclined to take the advice of ICE & Ben's.

I may not know the intricacies of tuning, but wtf has boost got to do with running rich/lean? Sounds more like your tuner hasn't got his fuel mapping correct than whether you're running too much boost...

I'm running 2530s at 19psi and my AFR is sitting dead on 12.0, I don't know why you'd want to run these turbos at a lower boost pressure than that.

Actuall I dare say my tuner has a damn good idea as to what he's doing. Its running rich because we tuned it to run rich, once plugs got cleaned/serviced they started flowing even more so its running richer again therefore need to retune.

As for boost I dont need to run more than 1 bar with even a very safe/rich tune to attain power figures there fore if we lean it out I can safely lower the boost to still achieve satisfactory figures that was my points.

Meshmesh turbos seem good reason i was just saying save for a new engine is due to a rough limit of 450rwhp for a RB26DETT stock internals imho.. its a safe benchmark to try to keep to. Thats just me though *shrugs*

Jack, that is an awsome effort. good to see people looking outside the square, and trying domething different. I cant wait to see a side, by side compairson of the t51z and 2530's should be great!!

also

Its running rich because we tuned it to run rich

doesnt that defeat the meaning of 'tuning'?

once plugs got cleaned/serviced they started flowing even more so its running richer again

WTF!!!! First time i have ever heard of plugs being able to flow? flow what? and how if they do 'flow' does it make the engine run richer?

sorry but my limited knowledge of cars and tuning cannot comprehend what you are talking about. Is it just me?

Jack - great results mate! Very happy for you and its great to finally have your car back on the road.

The final dyno figure was a little lower than expected wasn't it however?

You guys have to wait for my turbo to get done for the comparison day so we can add a thrid comparision considering they should all be similar in power but with different turbo set-ups.

Although I broke my 3rd gear syncro today at Sandown so my turbo plans may be put on the back-burner depending on how much it costs to repair.

I'm just waiting to get my conrods and injectors back from testing, and then I'm all set to go :(:D:) :) :)

I'll even try to get my car down to Melbourne to do a comparison dyno day with you guys if it's feasible!

Great result Jack!

running things a little rich up top is a very smart idea. Sure you can probably nab another 20rwhp but, at the cost of a much finer margin for error outside the tuning environment. The dyno is not the track or road, and as such AFR's can vary enough to screw your engine if it's not tuned with a decent fall back. Also if summoner can make that sort of power at 1 bar thats a great bonus to engine longevity. Shame about not running AFM's on the Wolf tho'. It's not like RB20 AFM's are that expensive as an uprgrade on the RB26.

Thanks guys for your comments...

summoner- looks like you are running bigger turbos (2540s) than me, therefore its probably safe you keep them at 1 bar as they are known for making great power, but very poor response and lag..... I know a lot of guys running 320rwkws on standard engines and haven't had any problems. My AFR's are right on 12 all the way through the rev range, so I don't see why I should be screwing up my engine any time soon....

And remember, it's not all about power!!!! It's how its delivered... My car is no dyno queen..

NRB- Amen

jezrrr- yes I have read the thread, but rebuilding the turbos over time doesn't really concern me. Do you know what it costs to rebuild the turbos??? You'll be surprised....

Got an oil cooler going on next week, so that should help???

meshmesh- great points raised there, just to remind people I'm not implying that these turbos are better than any other turbo out there, its more to enlighten people on what T517s are capable of, and compare them to 2530s in relation to lag, response and power..

Aphex- cheers, good points raised there too...

RedR32- yeah comparison should be good..

Snowman- power is what I was after, around 320rwkws (not in shootout mode).. Don't know others were expecting... don't forget I'm running 1.3 bar, there's plenty left in it....

Merli- your car is going to be an absolute f@#$ing weapon, you'll be running much higher boost than me, so it would be interesting to see what the GT-SS's will be capable of.... I can definetly say that they won't be as laggy than mine!!!!! Can't wait to see the results...

rev210- spot on!!!

JAG, you'd be very suprised at the responce of these turbo's.. we over layed my dyno chart to that of an R34 gt-r on 1 bar with usuall fmic/zorst combo and even before i make 1bar boost its producing more power than the r34 is at its 1 bar peak.

Your setup seems to be a fantastic street setup and will be lethal at the circuit/drags due to responce/lack of lag :)

cool, just from what I've heard that 2540s are very laggy, but make great power

I hope to prove this wrong. Had strong mid range on my std (but tired) RB26 with 25/40s. The adjustable cam gears helped to reduce the lag considerably.

With new cams and zaust manifolds going on as part of the rebuild, I hope to have a torque curve as wide as Summoners but with a higher peak (+500 hp).

Engine should be back from the machine shop this week, so maybe a few weeks away yet if all goes well.

I'll only be running 1.3-1.4 bar... That's all these turbos are made for... They're a lot smaller than your T517z-10cm2 turbos...

I'm hoping for 300-ish @ the wheels, so we'll see if the response and mid-range make up for the lack of top end...

Here's hoping! :P

ph1- do you mind telling us when full boost hits on your setup???

Merli- surely you should be able to run more than that, even just to get the numbers on the 1/4 mile???

sydneykit- I've got one going on next week, 16 row Trust item with oil relocation...

INASNT- should be happening in the next couple of weeks, will keep you informed....

Well theres a few differences in our setups, mine are the t517z-8cm2 turbos, and I have Tomei 260in/ex 10.8mm camshafts.

I'm not sure when full boost hits, but my graph is a lot different to yours. Ben actually overlayed my graph on one of his better standard turbo tunes (250+rwkw) and mine was making more power (15rwkw or so) at 4000rpm than the standard turbos.

When I get home this evening I'll try to find some scans of my graphs, I have a couple, one is 347rwkw and the final tune of about 340rwkw/22psi and 317rwkw/18psi. As you can see the smaller exhaust housings weren't too good at higher boost levels, with your larger exhaust housings I would of expected a bit more power, maybe it's worth your time to look into some cam gears or even better some larger camshafts.

    • Hi soviet_merlin, We appreciate your concern regarding this possibly being some sort of PR/Political hype, I assure you that is not the case, I wish we could claim something like that, but in this case, we merely reached out for comment on the basis of the outrage we too felt, as those heavily in the automotive industry. Ps. the original source in the social media post is CarExpert not CarExplore.    Best, CE.
    • Made a bit of a discovery, but while I was cruising, I randomly decided to test to see if it worked and it showed up on my IC7. The entire time I tested it before, I never thought to turn the ignition on. I only tested it with head lights turned on but with the ignition off. Huge oversight on my end. I’m a dummy. I know.
    • G'day all, I have drilled and tapped the hole for the relocation of the timing belt tensioner. That was straight forward. I'm unsure if I need to also put another hole for the smaller stud that the spring behind the tensioner catches on (this is how it seems to work in its original spot). Or do you not use the spring behind it and just torque it down? Thanks in advance, I did a search but couldn't find anything related and it doesn't mention it in the rb30det sau guide.
    • Hi All,  just thought I would provide an update as I know smooth (Matt) was on this forum from 2003.    my brother Matthew passed away end of may 2024 at the age of 41 from liver failure. I am not sure how many of his original team krazy friends are still on here or active but thought it reasonable to let the forum know.    if you have any photos or pictures it would be great if you could share them.    it took me a while to work out he was active on here.    thanks so much
