Sau A.c.t. - What Did You Do To Your Car Today?

Recommended Posts

18x9+20, tyres im thinking either 235/40 or a 245/40. After looking at Pattey's car, has the same dimensions on his rims, im thinking I could sqeeze a 245/40 under there. Only issue is trying to decide on a brand and model of tyre haha.. Don't think I want to run Federals again because it's just too slippy in the wet.. Been doing a fair bit of reading, but there's so much out there. Kuhmo KU31 seems like a decent tyre from what I've read. Just need to keep looking :/

orly? You wouldn't happen to know roughly how much they are would you? Had a quick look online but haven't requested quotes or anything. Was planning to do that next week when the last rim actually arrives..

When I last got tyres on my 17s the KU31s were gonna be $150 each.

Instead (thanks to the Managers stuff up) I got Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 235/45ZR17 for the same price. (should've been $250 each) :D

The reason I wanted / want the KU31s is (may not be a fair comparison but...) the wheels I got off Ebay for the Micra had near new KU31s on them.

Felt very good and grippy. They have since done over 30,000ks and still look new.

Get Michelin Pilot Sport 3. I can still enjoy my car in the wet. Your 100% right Federals suck when wet or maybe go on the thread "What tyres youve used and how you rate them" . Dont cheap out for the fronts though because you wont change them as often unless if you dont have a staggered setup meaning you can rotate all four.

Used both KU31 and Federal RSR595's on my GTR

Found the KU31's better at lower and higher speeds in the wet due to tread pattern/depth to move the water

They're a good all rounder and likely wear better than the RSR's

The RSR's I found are better when dry roads. and upto around 120kmph in the wet before I start to loose confidence in them.

I run the RSR's on both my lines now and enjoy the grip from a semi in the dry and sit around 110 in the wet.

agreed - I run these on the mondeo daily (PS3's) and they are fantastic. likely I will only get 20,000-25,000km off them, but when it comes to tyres, spend more and get the very best you can. don't cheap out on tyres - I've tried kumho's on the XC90 (followinging a recommendation) and they don't compare to the Pirelli's in terms of grip, feedback and confidence.

on the GTR I've been running Toyos's, but will switch to PS2's (std porsche fittment in my size) next time.

I dunno. I'd rather not buy Pirellis or anything like that in price for a daily becuase they are hugely inflated in price for a car that does not need endless grip. Just my opinion, i know how important they are for a car but a daily driver should not be getting driven to the point you need expensive tyres.

As for the GTR i run 959 RSR as for the price there isn't really anything better. I was toying with the price for the Toyo R888 but at $400-$480 Each it just is not worth it. And from My experience trying most decent rubber for my 265 profile im never going back to standard Road tyres. It doesn't rain here enough (and if it's raining i actually prefer not to take the GTR out as id have to clean it again lolol) and in the dry they are amazing. And even then in the wet i have had 0 issues because you drive to the conditions.

I see what your point, but have the opposite opinion - the cut and thrust of daily driving is when you need the best in tyres to keep you safe on the road (I have the kids in the car, so nothing cheap that doesn't give the best grip on the road isn't going on). I paid $180 per tyre for the PS3's - can't beat that for BFB. I don't drive the GTR in the wet.

the old addage - you get what you pay for rings true in my experience with tyres.

The bike always had Michelin, they were the best at the time.

I found Pirelli bike tyres weird, they werent the right shape/cross section. And Pirellis didnt last. So were only good for particular sport bikes that liked that shape. Maybe they were for v twins like Ducati, but they were terrible on an inline 4.

Cars arent so sensitive to the shape/cross section, as car tyres are fairly square, but they are slightly different between brands.

People dont think this is as important as compound and tread pattern, but it makes a huge difference in how it feels.

Think about a Ferrari or similar: Mid engine, and very low cg. Tyres for that car wouldnt suit a Skyline as well as it could.

Its very tricky to find the BEST tyres for your car, and you can spend a lot on something thats not so great because its not suitable.

Anyway mr know it all did some sanding, bogging, more sanding....etc. :D

Yeah it does come down to the driver and what they feel comfortable with too. Sometimes it's all psychological. They did do a blind test on some magazine I can't remember and the results were good could have been the magizine fudging the results too.

    • Welcome.  Glad to hear that you have gained some knowledge that has helped you. I believe the only fix for the power steer belt is an electric conversion with a Holden astra pump. If you get a chance, post pics of your car, please. 🙂

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
