A cat is for the emmissions to meet our EPA regs. (catching and converting the hot fuely fumes to an acceptable level)

There is not too much impact on actual air flow believe it or not. and honestly I dont care if you dont.

Obviously straight through is best as there is no impediment at all. BUT it is slightly worse for the environment.

A cat converts, a muffler muffles :P

Mufflers reduce air flow more than cats as your trying to turn down the sound.

Edit: I'll add it's the size from Turbo to tip that matters most, but you have to have the need to flow that much

Installed my braided brake lines, project Mu front pads and did a complete brake and clutch fluid flush on saturday. Made a shit-ton of difference!!

Put a filter on it today as i decided running a bell-mouth around town is a bit silly lol. Also adjusted my clutch switch so it doesnt try turn launch control on every time i rest my foot lightly on the pedal lol
