5D Mkii can actually be had for sub $1500 now just saying.

But quite useless without a lens.

Best way to go... buy a kit.. I think a 7D + 18-200mm is perfect to start out with. Haven't checked on price, but maybe $1500 or just above.

Or "step down" and go the 60D kit lens as linked above.

Maybe the Canon EF 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM which will work as a 45-215 on the 7D sensor and then be ok on a full body camera for next time. Then just get an EFS in 18-55 if you need the short end aswell?
