Hey guys

So my aim was to own a Skyline but not be defectable. This seems like its going to be a hard task to accomplish unless the car is dead stock.

Ive recently read the NSW defect list thread and got scared $hitless.

Can anyone clarify if the following is defectable or not in NSW :

- Pod filter - if it is secured and covered , is it still defectable? Heard it has to be fully enclosed. True?

- FMIC - Heard these are defectable if it is open - requires a mesh in front of it . Also cant have it if you have a pod filter as only one intake mod allowed. True?

- No aftermarket camber arms?

- Not allowed to have larger width rear tyres then front tyres

- Turbo timer not allowed

I currently have the following mods

- Pod filter(covered and secured but not fully enclosed)

- Blitz turnflow front mount intercooler(uses stock routing of piping)

- Coilovers - looks to be about 85mm clearance - i know 100mm is required)

- 3 Inch exhaust straight through (sounds like its withing noise limit)

- 18's 255 rear and 18's 235 front

- Boost controller and boost gauge mounted behind steering wheel

- Turbo timer

What possible defects can I get? Are any or all of these able to be "engineered"? If so , how much generally?

Is there a list that exists that anyone has a link to?

Here's an article relating to defects just for your info

Beside returning car to stock , any other way for avoiding defects while still keeping the line looking sexy ? :)

If you want to modify your car, there will be something on it that can be defected. The only thing that you can do is do it smart. Avoid any obvious stuff.

  • Don't have your car too low, invest in adjustable height coilovers and make sure you're at or above the 100mm.
  • Don't have an atmospheric BOV.
  • Just use a stock airbox, the pod doesn't gain anything, and if you really want the pod, box it up properly.
  • Don't get too crazy with your wheels.
  • Think about not having a turbo timer, if you've been driving normally and off boost you don't really need it, and if you have been driving hard, just let it run for a minute before you turn it off.
  • Keep your exhaust quiet, big arse mufflers to take the edge off it, drone and db levels.
  • Keep your turbo low mount, a hypergear highflow is pretty good for this.

You can make good power and keep your engine bay looking pretty stock, you just have to think it through before your build.

I'd also look at avoid cruising in known hot spots.

don't stand out unless you are into that sexspec scene and dont stand out with your driving style...!

Chris above makes some good points.

It's NSW.

there is no upper authority.

even if stock or engineered, the police can and probably will defect you.

they don't have to know if it is or isn't legal, they write their slip, and send you to get an inspection.

you go and get it cleared, by inspector/engineer, then head to rta.

you could be pulled over coming out the driveway, and start the whole process again.

good luck.

agree with all said so far, I'll add the following:

in my experience with my old cars, not acting like a douchebag on the road & being polite to the officer when I was pulled over for a "random license check" got me off the hook for things like BOV, Pod filter (heat shielded but not fully enclosed etc)

current car is legal so all good, even got a thumbs up from HWP once when they pulled up next to me at a red light

I currently have the following mods

- Pod filter(covered and secured but not fully enclosed) as above you might get away with it if you pass the 'attitude test' but get it enclosed or go back to stock airbox with a high flow panel filter for peace of mind

- Blitz turnflow front mount intercooler(uses stock routing of piping) as long as you didn't cut a hole under the battery tray to fit piping & the pipe doesn't go over the radiator fan you would get away with a standard roadside check, if you are ordered to get an inspection & you trimmed the reo bar to fit the intercooler you will get picked up on it

- Coilovers - looks to be about 85mm clearance - i know 100mm is required) measure the lowest point of your car including any exhaust piping & bodykit to be sure, up to you what you do from there

- 3 Inch exhaust straight through (sounds like its withing noise limit) do you have a cat or resonator? If you are sent to the pits you probably won't pass noise & emission with the majority of aftermarket canons though it's been awhile since I've owned a 33, not up to date with all aftermarket options

thanks for the advice guys but still looking for answers to the following question :

Also , when you say polite , you mean the usualy , yes sir , no sir kind of thing....or does that sound like brown nosing?

i don't think you need to add sir/madam into everything, that could possibly get a bit annoying unless you have a nice smile on your face and come across as genuinely happy. which basically leads me to say, just have a smile on your face, be friendly, and answer their questions. simple, really. unless they're really out to get you but then you're screwed anyway.

i have a cat and canon , it seriously isnt to loud (was thinking about making it louder but now have decided against it)

I dont drive like a d*ck ever , and truthfully Ive owned my Skyline for abour 6 months now and havnt been pulled over once.

Im doing everything as legal as I can do it ,I guess Il get the pod covered and hope for the best.

Avoid the shiny stuff and the blue hoses everywhere as well as an attitude as mentioned and you should be fine! Eg. I nice and shiny atmo venting blow off valve is a dead giveaway, where as a Matt black front mount with or without mesh is not so blatantly obvious.

that was the longest sentence in the world.

People, listen up. It's called not driving like a dickhead. Drive like a dickhead and be a smart ass, you will get defected. I have 20's on my skyline and been through tonnes road blocks, and have not once been hassled.

Keep ya mouth shut, provide the license, and roll on through. Don't have anything that is to noisy and you will be right; don't be dropping skids with arms hanging out the windows with ya fully sick jet pilot stickers on the back window, cos half of u little 21 yr old dickheads can't drive for shit and cause mass accidents.

Drive ya car normal and they will turn a blind eye, but u get defected for anything that is added to the car that draws attention. Doing constant street lappeys with the sub woofer bruz as they say in sydney, or anything that makes a lot of noise and constant cruising around the cops will most likely:

A) defect you if your being a wanker

B) have wheels hanging out the front guards

C) or way to noisy

D) and it's all how U drive. The police have better things to do than chase little teen boy racers all day long. Comes down to your driving pattern ! And they will catch you too !!!

Haha I suck at punctuation man never bothered with school, I can spell but just makes me laugh. don't understand why everybody winges about defects , u gotta be doing something wrong to cop one. only one I've ever copped was a bald tyre with steel hanging out the rim that the bloke cut his hand on it . plus let me slide for everything else and the car was defect territory but then later the tire had a hectic blow out and if he didn't defect me It coulda blown out at 110 on the m4 .

Just being respectable will not get you off the hook 100% of the time, it's roll of the dice. It certainly doesn't help the situation if someone is acting like a prick towards the cops though :)

I was a passenger in a mates Supra once, stock on the outside beside an exhaust & wheels, got pulled over in an RBT. Police asked him open his bonnet, my friend was co-operative & polite the entire time but still got ordered to an inspection station for exhaust & pod filter

Oh absolutely agree with you - do the right thing and don't be a prick, and you should be right. There'll always be cops that stick hard and fast to the law, but there's a lot out there who are lenient because there's bigger fish to fry.
