Back on topic. If you drive an import and the officer that pulls you up is having a bad day, he can defect regardless of what is legal on your car.

excellent. bottom line - sensible mods - dont be an a$$hole , drive sensibly and you'l be fine

dont go to the extent of making sure verything is 100% defect free as it will never be 100% defect free if you drive a car like a Skyline.

Its just something that comes with the territory I guess.

Lets see how long i can last with my pod cover , height and front mount. Only three items I see being a possible problem

Really you shouldn't have many problems at all i wouldn't bother. I am YET to be pulled over in the GT-R and when i owned an N/A r32 on red P's in NSW i used to get pulled over every second night. They never bothered to defect me for a POD unboxed. i mean it might happen every now and then but i wouldn't bother. If you get defected just fix it and swap it back its pretty easy.

I've done everything possible to make mine as legal as i can but at the end of the day if the HWP guy wants too he can ruin my day so quickly and easily...... If you do the right thing and the car is well maintained and presented then you have a chance they will leave you alone, keep it quiet and legal height, keep stuff plumbed back and all emission gear intact and good luck :)

yeah the two big ones are height and noise. After that most cops will leave you alone.

Exactly, if they want to pop my bonnet they can enjot the sea of black goodness, plumed back BOV, full emissions gear, plumbed back gate  and full airbox, but they could still nail me anyway!

Oh absolutely agree with you - do the right thing and don't be a prick, and you should be right. There'll always be cops that stick hard and fast to the law, but there's a lot out there who are lenient because there's bigger fish to fry.

Yup.

Attitude comes from both sides; and if both sides are courteous, nothing much happens.

just head a nightmare relating to my car being smashed from all sides( what a releif when i woke up) but this leads me to another question.with these defects..if i where to meet in an accident...would my insurance cover me or refuse to because of the defects?

Proberly not mate if u chop ya car of it guts proberly shannons or just cars will look after you maybe !!! Not 100% these P plater wankers down here in sydney should be the ones getting defected driving the fully chopped up 3.8 litre naturally aspirated with the auto and the stickers on the back mate these ones cause accidents !!! P PLATERS PULL THEM ALL OVER NOW !!!!

lol thats a bit of generalisation...but i get what ur saying.every p plater in a commo wants to race me for some reason.... i have no idea why they think they stand a chance....

Ill just say this is bullshit because its the Holden's and fords doing all the speeding an where copping the defects why don't they hammer the commys you can't even drive a skyline hard out in the wet or you will spit side ways but watch all the shit box commys and fords over takin us in the rain up the other side of the road and they wanna pick on you boys and skylines are better cars they handle there safer they break better there 100% better car and safer

car in every way the commys have shit breaks shit handling and every thing every thing we deserve respect mate for driving a safer car even the wrx is better and safer then the fords and Holden's we get done defected but look around what do you see speeding a COMMODORE !!!!!!

whoa man , full stops. use them.

I get what you're saying , the whole stigma attached to skylines makes us more susceptible to be pulled over by the cops and defect..I agree

In either case, its part of the territory of owning a Skyline , all we can do is make it as legal as possible and be polite if/when we get pulled over. Nothing more we can do then that :)

my 2c;

- no excessive lowering

- no loud exhausts

- no pods, std airbox only (or something that looks like a standard airbox)

- no atmo BOVs

- no bald tyres

- no attitude

The more stock its looks the less hassle you will have.

Someone on here, a while back, was pulled by a cop and the cop said unless the pod is completely sealed in an enclosure its defectable. Unfortunately, that cop may have been dropped on the head. A fully sealed pod filter is like breathing through a straw.

I read somewhere that a guy is the ft86 got defected because of the DRL's which you can't switch off. Tyre size is, I believe, 2" bigger than the sticker on the car which again is quite silly. Unless your tyres are sticking out your guard of give turning issues, wider tyres actually give better grip to the road with the increased surface area touching the road.

Making the car "as legal as possible" won't do anything if you're bitten by the wrong cop. Its all in the attitude and the cops mood. I was ready to start making changes to get my car engineered but since its just an extra cost which will not guarantee you won't be defected, its just more money you gotta spend.

Ultimately it comes to ride height and the noise. If your car can't be heard from down the street or seen cutting the grass, you might slip under the radar.

All this said, I really do miss my old exuahst. Its been off for a while now. I jacked the car up yesterday to put it back on but I had to resist.

Meh..I guess Im complaining to much

Ive owned a skyline for 7 months now , 5 of those months it was pretty low , 3inch exhaust , exposed pod , and then last month I got a frount mount and used vht nighshades on the indicators

Have had a few cops behind and infront of me and also got stopped at an RBT once. never once did they mention the car , look under the bonnet etc..

Cops seemed pretty cool as far as I can tell , havnt had any of those harrasment horror stories I hear so much about

I think I'm just going to cover my pod , hide my boost controller and call it a day. Should be fine.

I am a crim/traffic lawyer in Sydney and I am keen to embark on a test case with respect to police issued defect notices.

If anyone in Sydney has recently been issued with a defect notice from NSW Police and has

Not been to have the defect cleared, please PM me.

    • Hows your intake piping? Are you still running stock? Having in the stock AFM position would mean, if the BOV was shut/venting out, it'd create the almost stalling kind of effect right // "the rich pulse behaviour" due to MAF thinking air is flowing ? But this would be better than having the bov in the stock position + MAF on/just before cross over piping right?
    • Essentially, yes. Although I wouldn't put the AFM on the crossover pipe. I'd want to put it into what amounts to the correct size tube, which is more easily done in the intercooler pipework. I bought a mount tube for card stile AFM that replaces the stock AFM - although being a cheap AliExpress knockoff, it had not flange and I had to make and weld my own. But it is the same length and diameter as the stock RB AFM, goes on my airbox, etc etc. I don't have a sick enough rig to warrant anything different, and the swap will take 5 minutes (when I finally get around to it and the injectors & the dyno tune).
    • So to summarise, the best thing to do is to move recirc to between turbo and IC, and maf on the crossover pipe. Meaning I'd need a recirc flange, drill a hole in the piping on turbo outlet area. And drill hole on crossover to fit/weld maf sensor? Either that or put the MAF on the turbo inlet right?  Is an aftermarket recirc/blowoff valve recommended? Do currently have family in Japan so could probably bring something back with maybe a cheeky lil SuperAutobacs run?
    • Yep, so far most have said that it looks like corrosion on the wall from piston not moving. Which then has probably damaged the oil rings and caused those vertical marks. The longest the engine was still after the rebuild, was the winter of 2018 - 2019, plus the boat trip to Japan. When I shipped the car, it had normal gas in the tank but before that winter pause, it had E85 in tank.  In any case, even if either one of those was the cause, it happened close to 6 years ago and the car has been driven something like 30 000kms after the fact. Again, apart from the plugs and the dip stick, there is nothing in the way the car runs that would indicate what has been going on in the engine. I am going to consult a shop and ask their opinion, what would be the best approach. I do have some access to a garage I could use to diagnose further myself, but time is very restrictive. Might end up buying another engine that could be used while this one is being remedied. Without pulling the head, it will be impossible to find out if it needs another bore, but here's to hoping a hone would suffice.  Goddamnit, I would really have preferred this not happening.
    • Boot is going to be replaced eventually. I just wire brushed what I could and rust converted. Then painted in rust kill primer. the spoiler also got repainted and plugs replaced on the ends. The under side of the bonnet is going to be black also, currently white. But red on the top side, same colour code as the silo to begin.
