Over the past couple of months, with the help of this forum, I have been bringing an R33 GTR back to spec. With replaced steering rack, new shocks, tyres, reconditioned mags and a few other things it is now going well. Sits rock steady at 170-no vibration whatsoever.

But now it is to the air con. The compressor is not working. I have ordered a working compressor from an R33 GTs-T. mIt looks exactly the same except for the backplate where the connection for the suction hose has been changed for what I guess is clearance.

Has anyone modified this compressor to fit a GTR? What I was thinking of doing was changing the backplate from my GTR compressor to this GTs-T compressor. It should then connect straight up to the GTR hoses. Has anyone done this? Advice please.

My first concern would be the back plate gasket-can it be reused?

Thanks.

I would think its a metal gasket so yes it can be swapped if the pattern is the same. Make sure the S and D symbols are both on same sides etc.

Have back plate facing up if you don't wanna lose the oil but I would drain it and get new oil when its gassed up

Nothing goes as planned! Well the used compressor arrived. But now I have a new problem-hope someone can advise a solution.

The outlet and inlet holes on the compressor are slightly larger then my compressor-about 2 to 2.5mm larger in diamater.

I realise an obvious solution is to try to get another compressor with the same size opennings as my original compressor. Also to possiblt see about changing my hoses to get the right size connections.

But has anyone had this problem (it seems Nissan made this change through the life of the R33) and found a solution to use the compressor with my original hoses that have been made to be a very snug fit in my original compressor. When I put my hoses into the openning of this used compressor with the larger openning there will be at least 1mm play around the fittings.

Help! Any suggestions most welcome and appreciated.

Just to let everyone know how things worked out. My very helpful local Auto Electrician Macca's rumaged through his collection of O rings. We found some larger O rings that were a fairly close fit for inside and outside diameter. Much thicker then the original O rings. Fitted these. Both of us were concerned due to the amount of play, so I also put some v good gasket cement above the O ring of the outlet and between the aluminium mating surfaces at the top. The gasket maker was also rated for refrigerant use.. This may not have been needed.

Once together tested the system to 250lbs pressure. All ok. Job is now finished and air con is working beutifully.

Next job is to make up a new floor for the boot. Threw out the old one as it had been wrecked by the previous owner(s)? installation of copious amounts of hi fi gear which I removed. Once this job is done the GTR will be back to standard with all working well throughout the car.

    • True, might get it looked at. Found out you can in fact flatten the 12v battery relatively easily too the other day (kids lefts the hazards on) so meaning to get that checked in the new year. What's odd is it'll blow cold from both vents if you have the ac down as low as poss (18), but anything else the passenger one blows warmish. Also has been summer since I got it obvs but noticed it didn't seem to want to blow hot last night when we had a cold snap.
    • You ask for things. You specifically state you want responsiveness. A link was provided for a far superior, more responsive option. Find a MX5 workshop that will install it for you. Maybe MX5 Mania will throw on the Fab9 kit. It seems they want to charge almost 14K installed for their kit, so if they charge you $6K to install the FAB9 kit then you'll be ahead? Though really, the 2.5 with a 2860 running low boost will more or less feel as good as anything else. It's a lot of displacement and a small turbo. Think of a more modern RB26 with one stock turbo :p TBH, truth be told I've been driving my own car, and use about 50% throttle at most for 99.9% of the time. Mr Bogan is likely similar so this is all going to be semantics for the use case he actually has. (He'll be happy with anything relative to now) However, the EFR is hands down far superior in this use case. You really, really, really, really do notice it over the Garrett or equivalent.
    • You are correct, the earlier the torque, the earlier things snap
    • Gents, it will be getting the MX5 Mania kit and the 2.5 will be staying where it is My query was about the 0.64 or the 0.86, whilst the 0.64 might spool a bit faster, would the 0.86 be better IRT EGT and mechanical sympathy, with only a small difference in spool And as I assume I won't need alot of boost to get to 200kw, probably around 10 psi, and with max rpm at 6500, would high EGT even really be a issue with a 0.64 I'm heading into MX5 Mania at the end of Jan to discuss the install, so any info is welcome prior to that Basically have a chat and book a time so they can throw on the turbo kit, and fit a oil cooler with a thermostat, drive in drive out of course  In other news: just finished cleaning the car inside and out, it's now all ready to get covered in bugs and dirt driving to Goulburn tomorrow to lunch,  and go for a stroll along woolondilly River with the daughter and her boy, and of course, visit my grandcats and my new grandpuppy
    • Sounds like it has an actual problem with mode select doors, or something.
