yeah saw the ad with guys doin wheelies and stoppies at traffic lights and quick burnout.

by the way probably wont be on monday night because they said 'today tonight this week'

Al - no probs mate.. cmon - you know what I mean by the "we" business.. :P

seriously though - i don't really see how these guys are different to most groups around - sounds like they have fun but in a responsible matter. Now depending on where you are coming from your definition of "responsible" will be different.. problem is they put their efforts on a public forum and inevitably it's being mis-used to create a crappy sensationalistic news story for a city that has no real world issues to worry about.. shame.. hope it doesn't cause too many problems for you guys...

SEXZILLA.. none of those videos you mentioned are done by professionals bar The 350Z in prague.

the Rendevious is actually filmed from a Porsche or Ferrari(forgotten which) not a GT40.. the stockholm series is done using few regulars from the illegal street meets, some who happen to compete in other events like rallys etc.

To all you have put their thoughts and opinions here (sexzila :) ), thankyou. It's interestiing to see how other people feel about this. I agree, that in general a group will have it's select few who do what they do. As point of note however in respect to the riders here in question, they all extremely experienced riders and also have racing experience.

Sexzila, I'm sure myself and others aren't trying to say that bikes and skylines are one and the same but it's more the issue of generalisations made by the media and general public which reflect upon everybody and not just those involved. After all, a story without sensationalism isn't a story :P

Oh, for those that are interested, the African Violets are doing well in these extreme conditions :D

I work at Ch 9 and I am always listening out to see if the Journos are going to make a "beat up" story about HP car owners. The thing is commercial news is just that - commercial. They make news that gets more viewers so advertisers will spend money. I argue with journos here about their overwrought senstationalist crap news stories - and they agree with me that its all a crock - but its the job they have to do to make the station money. Advertisers only give money to stations that have lots of viewers and a story about import viehicles will only stir the interest of Joe and Betty Balga when it features "shocking revalations" that they are all "hoons".

I am trying to get some interest for a positive story about import car owner clubs and Jap car culture. Apart from my full time work as a sound engineer here at CH9 I am also a film maker (I wrote and directed that doco about video games that screened earlier this year on 9) I was interested in working on a positive piece about import car culture.

But there is one caveat - no matter how positive an angle I intend to put on a story it is a fact that if you are driving above the set limit for legal speed on a public road you are breaking the written law and unfortunately that is how people see import car owners - as people drive above the limit - and believe me I am no saint either. :)

But if anyone has any ideas for a story then I am eager to listen. I still don't know if I want to commit to producing the story as I am currently working on another film for SBS, but I am interested to know what you guys think. Could the scene use positive publicity? Or is no publicity better?

This is what I was talking about earlier. We need to establish a respectfull name like VW Australia club.....those golf owners don't get into trouble as others.....

Like I said lets not advertise law braking behaviour....

It seams and you are correct 100% that publis loves to watch crime and more crime on TV. That is all you see on the news and current affairs....sad but true.

So to counter act this we come up with some sort of club day to promote community spirit ....... show and tell day or charity cruise or somethin......everybody love money and a good cause..... a bit of positive MARKETING :)

i didnt see it but i saw the "follow up article" in the West Aust this morning ...... typical media sensationalism ..... so heres my 2 cents.

A "hoon" in a hyundai is just as dangerous as a "hoon" in a import ..... unfortunately these guys forget that a hoon is a mentality not the car/bike you drive.

An example of this is im not exactly the most well behaved person on the roads but i have a mental condition that makes me indulge in reckless, dangerous and self destructive behaviour (now i guess you know everything about me) and my car is the outlet for it..... put me in any car and the driving style doesnt change.

But what Mike has said before is very true that these stories are created to sell papers n ratings ..... not to accurately portay reality. Therefore i think as far as the import community is concerned "no news is good news" .... charity runs etc have all been done before to try and raise our profile with police and the community ...... even "bikies" have done it to try and raise their profile - but it doesnt work. They even made meeting up for cruises look like an evil thing in the paper.

Channel 9 this morning on the Today show had a quick story about women getting into Drifting and how most of em were kicking the guys asses coz the lack of testosterone meant their right foot was lighter :)

Anyway, it was a very positive story about enjoying motorsport in a controlled environment. So its not ALL bad news.

But today tonight has always had the journalistic standards of 50 monkeys at 50 typewriters ("It was the best of times it was the BLURST of times? YOU STUPID MONKEY!").

Also the comments made about the various video's knocking about of supposed pro's doing car videos. I *think*, and dont quote me on this one, the Rendevous in Paris was Jacques Laffite in a Ferrari, and I do believe it was in uncontrolled circumstances (watch it and tell me otherwise.... theres no way they can set up that many cars in that many positions on that many streets in a single take). However, it was shot by pro's you are right there.

Getaway in Stockholm was filmed on triple CCD Sony's, which are for all intensive purposes, broadcast quality. These are not really "pro" cameras, but are top of the line consumer. (my friend talked to the creators back when he was into making his own car vids). It doesnt take much to make a car mounted camera setup (mate has 2 rigs, made out of 20 bucks worth of ally, fasteners etc.... with a 400 dollar high res camera on the end) Results certainly look professional :thumbsup:

Ahh another one of these stories eh. i reckon the 50 monkies is close but u forget that 30 of those monkeys have been laid off, 5 of them throw darts at at the great "corkboard of trash" to pick what they will talk about next week. 5 more of em dig up the stories from the archives (including the footage of the commonwhore baking it up out of the maccas carpark) and the other 10 rewrite the old stories with cunning terms like "death defiying devils of danger" and "your children could be next!!!".

The fact is that the powers that be (wa govt) have no intention of limiting the performance of cars. I hear the new HSV has a 7.*ltr engine in it :P special interest groups can bitch all day but its not going to make a difference. We pay taxes and they have no interest in making a police state. All those bleeding hearts that say the road toll can be reduced are fools in my opinion. Ppl die on the roads, it happens, get over it. Ppl die of heart disease but they still sell smokes. Its a matter of personal choice, which is a basic human right.

If u get busted doing 160 in an 80 u deserve to lose ure license and thats the game that im sure we have all played at one time or another. u cant be busted if your not doing anything wrong, if u give teh cop a bit of lip sure he can yellow u but he cant take ure license.

Oh and by the way TABLIOD TV CAN SUCK MY DICK!!!! (just quietly of course)
