R32 Gts-T On P Plates In Victoria?

hi guys,

im new to the forum so this would be my first post.

I am currently 17 and not too far off of getting my p's, I have a general love for my skylines especially the r34 4 door gtr. I have been set on an r32 gts-t 4 door for a while now seeing as the laws have changed to nearlly the same as queensland's here in victoria. The Vicroads website states that:

"If your probationary licence was issued on or after 1 July 2007, you can drive some lower performance turbocharged or supercharged vehicles. The definition of a lower performance turbocharged or supercharged vehicle is a vehicle with six cylinders or less that is:

  • turbocharged or supercharged with a power to weight ratio of less than 100kW per tonne
  • turbocharged or supercharged with a power to weight ratio between 100kW and 125kW per tonne and that is considered to be a family type vehicle (four seats or more) rather than a sports type vehicle. A family type vehicle is a sedan, station wagon or hatch normally used to carry families/passengers with four or more seats and is equipped with child restraint anchorages. A family type vehicle does not include a sports car (two door coupe)."

Now... i got a phone call this morning from a lady from vicroads exemptions. She basically assumed i was some dick head p plater who just wants a fully sick turbo. She was rude and was set on telling me no i could not drive a 4 door r32 gts-t. I am confused because the r32 gts-t weighs 1,300kgs and makes 158rwk. 158/1300 = 121kw/tonne which falls bellow what vicroads states is required to drive a 4 door turbo charged vehicle. She said i can apply for an exemption aslong as i have some sort of "un-due hardship" that requires me to drive this vehicle. I wanted the gts-t so that i didnt have to sell it as soon as i was off my p's, Not to mention the n/a models cost more. I am tempted to send another letter and hopefully get someone a little more polite and not as ignorent to call me back. Ive heard of people applying for exemptions for the gts-t without undue hardship and just stateing that it falls below what the vicroads website states. Have any of you guys done this? im just looking for some solid info because as much as i love the gts-t im not going to risk my license to drive it.

Is this not the case? Seems to me the basis for your entire argument is that you're going to be a P plater and you want a turbocharged car for it...

A Skyline is seen as a sports car, whether it has 4 seats or 4 doors or whatever. You won't get it through on exemption. This rule was introduced primarily so P platers could drive turbo diesel vehicles due to the increasing supply and demand of economical and low emissions passenger vehicles from Europe in Australia. It was not introduced to give P players wanting a faster car on their Ps, some slack. They are talking turbo diesel golfs and supercharged/turbo petrol Polos/Colts, not slower model sports cars.

Stick with an N/A Skyline and save for your next car for when you're off your Ps. Or, if you want to go fast on your Ps, get a motorbike - nothing you can drive on your Ps will be faster.

I want to be able to go down to the track and have some fun. Im not looking at going 300km/h down the high way.

Nothing wrong with an N/A 32 or 33 then, plenty of P Platers on SAU attend DECA in these cars.

So get an N/A Skyline and do that. Crawl before you walk, you'll be better for it.

In any case, if your goal is track work, then you can buy a turbocharged track car and a cheap daily that can tow it around. You can drive a turbocharged race car on your Ps, but I suspect that's not what you actually want to do. Maybe you forget that we were 17 once too...

Get a Holden Volt! I test drove one and the dealer told me to drag one of their workshop guys who was in a HSV commie. I got off the line and up to 80 four out of five times. I only lost one because someone changed lanes. I'm working out if the monies can get me one. ;)

i had a n/a 33 on my Ps made 123rwkw little manual nimble thing, took it to DECA had a ball gear ratios ftw.

I wish the n/a's where at least cheaper than turbos. Im up for 10 grand for a car thats nearly 20 years old if i go for a 32.

And btw, better to be honest and say you want a car that has some go then say the vicroads lady thought you were just a p plater wanting a turbo because infact you do and right now you are looking at alternatives to get that. Guys on here will see through it in a second.

Alot of members here were/are in your position.

Money factor - paying more for an N/A can't help you but I was in the same position as you, wanting a turbo, we had power to weight laws back in the days(6 years ago :P) . Got an N/A - the exact model in you are talking about in "R33 2door 4WD N/A rocket ship" stock it is a ship - think titanic.

In the end I choose to modify what I had, happy with the outcome, but I can say the N/A skyline in stock form is very relaible and easy to drive - a good car for a p plater to learn in and looks decent.

As everyone is saying, just get an N/A if you want a skyline. Even if you get a turbo, as you said, it's 20 years old and a high chance of being tired/thrashed, not saying an N/A wouldn't either but theres generally more mechanical issues with turbos so there's more money you have to spend to get it running correctly.

I'll sell you my R34 GT if you want. I drove it on my P's and it was a lot of fun. Comes with 4" tip, silencer and stock exhaust.

Otherwise, my advice as a former P Plater trying to drive a turbo with exemptions.... dont bother wasting your time trying, it doesn't work with any excuse you give. So don't be picky with a car, just find something you can learn and practice with. I started off with a Rover:

I drove an N/A 4 door R34 on the last 1.5 year's of my P's and regret it, After reflecting on it i wish i bought a cheap 4 cylinder car that was cheap to maintain and got me from home to uni/work with little money spent on petrol.

As soon as i was off my P's i was thinking of getting a 34 GTT, i eventually ended up buying one sooner than i thought because my n/a 34 got stolen outside my house.

I think there are some main points you should think about (many of which people have stated)

- Police attention (even if it's N/A) trust me...

- Doesn't sound like you will be allowed legally to driver a turbo model on your P's

- More expensive on service/parts and fuel than your common 4 banger

- If you get an N/A theres a good chance you will want to sell it and get a gtst as soon as you're off your P's

I'm sure theres more dude... But i just know if i didn't buy mine i would have had more money to spend on going out with mates etc.
