Would like some geniune data/input here! Has anyone done dyno testing of developed power v fuel types, eg. Shell optimax v BP ultimate for say an R33 ST-T running a factory computer, slightly upped boost , performance exhaust, in a youngish (60,000ks) engine which has been fed clean synthetic oil/ filter every 8000ks or so? On the road I have drawn my own conclusions but would like to hear comment on this important issue. Cheers from JB.

My Conclusion: r33 gts-t 0.5bar (spikes 2 0.7bar) exhuast (catback), airfilter, bov

I ran 1st: Shell Unleaded - car ran ok, pinging like fu**k after 4000rpm got about 200km 2 1/2 a tank

2nd: Shell optimax - still pinging (but not as much), power was the same ran abit over 200km 2 1/2 a tank (around 210, 220)

3rd (and currently) Bp ultimate - no pinging, power much better, responds better and wouldnt die out as much at top rpm, kms 2 a tank abit unknowed as i have been driving it hard for along time and getting anywhere from 200 to 230km 2 1/2 a tank

my conclusions: BP is the best; pinging doesnt happen which results is a smoother power

an example: I would shift before 5000rpm when giving the car some shit when not running BP as the ping would result in a big power lost (car would feel like there was no turbo)

now car runs all the way to limited (7200rpm) and lost of power isn't that noticable at top rpm, car runs lovly in 1st,2nd and 3rd gear till limited (full power no lost)

after that 4th and 5th gear lose alittle bit of power at high rpm cuz of my custum turbo

Hi Mark, first let me sympathise with the Perth guys, no 98 octane there??? Risky running much less without attention to timing,,,, particularly with the original chipset. My conclusions, simply BP's ultimate is the better suited to the Skyline I drive and seems not to vary between fills, harder to get though and often I am stuck with Optimax which seems not to be as quality consistant. BP's Ultimate also yeilded better economy. Cheers from JB.

I use BP Ultimate for two reasons.

1. The fuel works and gives decent performance with no pinging i can hear.

2. The servo (the one I use at least) "guarantees" the fuel, which i assume means some kind of money back if the batch is crap. Keep the receipt and dial the BP complaints line.

I had some problems with the way my line was running... sometimes good... sometimes not so good (usual stuttering hesitation etc) especially when it was a bit cold... checked for vaccum leak, coils, afm etc. nothing worked 100% of the time to correct my problems. Finally decided to switch from Optimax to Ultimate. (was skeptical it would make a difference) and it now runs good ALL THE TIME!

Just have to drive out of my way to fill up... but don't mind cos there is no way I'm ever putting that poison sh!t back in my tank...

Can't remember if there was any dyno testing involved, but someone either posted or linked to an independant lab. test of the 98 octane fuels on our market for this reason exactly. Do a search on the site and I'm sure you'll find the original thread.

It came back with the same answers as is listed above:

Best: BP Ultimate

2nd: Mobil 8000

3rd: Shell Optim(istic)ax

have you guys not heard of mobil synergy 8000 its outspecs shell and bp by miles has no detergent additive and is refined 98 octane unlike shell and bp which are 95 octane refined and have additives put in to bring up the octane rating.also when i was in canberra saw a shell optimax truck filling up bp ultimate tank?????

Not 100% sure on this but I don't think its possible to get Synergy here in Canberra.

Hi. You may not have read all of the replies to the thread that you started on this topic last month, two.061, but BP Ultimate is a refined 98 octane product. I suggest you review the thread, which covers all of this in detail, including the fact that BP Kwinana supplies all fuel retailers in WA, no matter what their brand. Similarly for other refineries around Australia, if there ain't another refinery for a thousand clicks, you get your fuel from one place and one place only, no matter who's logo is flying above the refinery or the service station that you use.

13_devil, BP Ultimate is the only 98 octane fuel available in WA. I don't buy anything else, unless forced to. All other premium unleaded fuels in WA are only 95 octane.

don't know if it was the batch or not but i put in half a tank of synergy 8000 last week and as soon as i hit boost in 3rd, unichip retarded the timing or something. Car started jerking violently. Never in my 3 year of driving the r33 gtst using BP have i ever encountered this. Off boost response has also dropped.

hi Mark, apologies for not replying sooner, BP Ultimate for many reasons, most outlined in progressive posts. Just a note though, I filled the old banger, the shopping car, a Nissan Skyline 90 model (RB30 efi) one day at a local Shell Optimax outlet and nearly destroyed the engine, would not pull uphill, pinged, ran on and other rubbish. I challenged the output servo and would have taken the issue to the limit but for the lack of time and resource! Mixed fuels are the order of the day unless you connect with a servo of high integrity. Hope we can all find one in our local area wherever that may be,,,, All others in my area seem to be on the level but, unless we all have the knowledge and resources to keep these guys honest, who knows what goes into the tank!!!!???: Cheers to all from JB.

i use BP Ultimate for 2 reasons:

firstly, I used to use Optimax, tried BP once and the car seemed to run so much better (got no technical stuff to back it up lol...just felt better)

secondly, convenience! Both the BPs in Canberra that have Ultimate (yes, we have a whole 2 of them!!) are 24 hour, and one is near my home, and the other is near my work. And since i work nights, it's perfect :)

Judging by the threads you've generated, still a hot topic!

I've actually changed from Opti (mistic) max to BP Ultimate, because of you!!

Seems ok, car runs well, but $50.00 dollars only just got me 300Kms!!

Next I'll try the Mobil stuff, see how we go!!

    • 95 is just a scam outright. 98 is the real "premium" with all the best detergents and other additive packages, and at least historically, used to be more dense also. 95 is just 91 bargain basement shit with a little extra octane rating. Of course, there's 91 and there's 91 also. I always (back in the 90s early 2000s) refused to put fuel in from supermarket related fuel chains on the basis that it was nasty half arsed shit imported from Indonesia. Nowadays, I suspect that there is little difference between the nasty half-arsed shit brought in by the "bargain" chains and the nasty half-arsed shit brought in by the big brands, given that most of it is coming from the same SEAsian refineries. Anyway - if there's still anything to that logic, then it would apply to 95 also. 98 is only made in decent refineries and, as I said, is usually the "premium" fuel, both in terms of octane rating and "use this because it's good for your engine because it's got the unicorn jizz in it!".
    • Yeah since those first 2 replies I actually went and put some 98 in it and tbf it's already doing much better than the 95 (which is weird and makes my inner tinfoil hat wearer think the 95 was a crap batch), getting 8ish around town. Again, wonder if it takes a while to stabilize if the fuel is changed a couple of times. I swear cars used to just either run "well" or "s**t* in my 20s, none of this fuel optimisation business haha 
    • Any number of different ways. Have the coils draw sufficient current to provide contact wetting. Use different contacts in the switch, either by material or design, better suited to the low current drawn by a relay coil. Etc.
    • Hmm, how does the R34 manage to have headlight relays then without getting excessive carbon buildup on the headlight switch contacts?
    • Not R7R. Meant to type R&R, obviously enough.
