Hi all,

Mid way through my s1 Stagea rb25 - 32 gts4 conversion and need some advice.

My plans for the car will involve an aftermarket ecu (link / haltec) and an e85 tune after the motors worn in, im leaning towards skyline loom + ecu due to the parts availability.

Questions

1) - s2 r33 rb25det loom & manual ecu?

- s1 Stagea loom & *(auto) ecu?

- keep current rb20 ecu & loom, nistune ecu and modify loom, loose vct etc?

2) how well will my car run with tomei poncams & std ecu?

3) am I right in assuming my rb20 clutch + flywheel will fit on my Stagea (auto) rb25?

Ill have a few more questions as I get further.

Any help appreciated, many thanks

1) Easiest option is to stick with an RB25 ECU. Manual or auto makes little difference, although it will be more driveable with manual ECU to go with manual transmission. Little things like closed throttle overrun ignition timing and stuff like that can be quite different between man and auto, even though the main fuel and timing maps are essentially the same.

RB20 ECU will give you the best operation in the long run simply because you can Nistune it and therefore can retune for any mods you make, like poncams. You don't have to go without VCT. You can always add a window switch into it to make it work close to normally.

The RB20 ECU+loom option will mean you have to rewire a bunch of sensors (CAS, TPS etc) to suit the RB25. A better option overall is to use the RB25 loom all the way back to the RB20 ECU and only make the couple of small changes needed at the ECU plug.

2) Would not try to run standard ECU with poncams. Would be a waste of time. Needs a tune to make it worthwhile. Given that you are moving from RB20 to 25, you won't want cams to start with anyway. Just enjoy the enormous pile of torque (compared to the rubber band that is the RB20) for as long as it takes to get used to it.

3) Yes. Needs suitable spigot bush. If the RB20 clutch is not a stronger aftermarket one, then consider an upgrade.

Thanks gtsboy, I've already got those 3 ecu's mentioned (rb20/ 33/ & stag) I don't want to spend the money on a nistune though because as soon as the motors run in it will be going in for a g4/ e85/ 3076

The motor already has the cams in it.. So it will run ok with the cams (256 9lift I think) just while I run it in or will it be a pig?

Rb20 had brass button of some description, I'm hoping the clutch + flywheel will just bolt on to my crank once all the auto torque converter shit is off

Many thanks

Josh

    • Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛
    • Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it
    • Good tips, I like it! 😂😂 My wife is a LOT more frugal than me so it's only me we need to worry about! A splurge to her is buying 2 pairs of socks in one visit at Kmart!
    • Haha, the appropriate response to the question "Is this new?" is "I've had this for a while.". With the unspoken small print that a while may be the time since this morning or five years ago   And to be fair I learned that from the best, i.e. my wife. Because it goes both ways.
    • Yeah kids certainly add a whole another dimension to your life.  Life ceases to be about you and more about them for a while!  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  I love watching them play sport and make new friends along the way. Wow, sounds like your mate is a good guy to know!!!  He's got some serious toys in the toy box!  Yes it would be lovely to be able to do stuff to your car without getting all tied up in boring shit like how to pay for it!!  I would describe my spending style as "aggressively spontaneous and logical but regrettable purchasing"....  That will hopefully make no sense at all which would be appropriate given that is how I buy stuff.  I'll decide at the drop of a hat that I'm buying something expensive, research the living shit out of it for 2 days straight then go out and buy it.  Then I'll have instant buyers remorse for 2 days which generally passes by the time it turns up on the front step!  If I'm feeling ballsy sometimes I'll tell my wife.  Other times it just makes its way silently passed the house and out the back to the shed, never to be spoken of again...
