Smaller and lighter? i would have to say eg civic or dc2 integra, i have both including my skyline and i honestly prefer to drive the hondas over the skyline because the hondas use way less fuel and less police attention then driving the skyline

mate do yourself a favour and have a drive in a Clio RS172 (that's 172hp.. which is 128kw... in a car that weighs 1090kg)

Apart from the power to weight advantages, they are one of the BEST handling fwd cars around.

And some features:

Auto rain sensing wipers

Driving around town, you'll never tell the difference.

On a race track, you will notice, depending on the car. There are some glorious FWD's out there (Renault Clio Sports, Focus RS, many of the "performance" oriented Civics and Integras). These still display FWD tendencies, but can be driven on the throttle, and can be every bit as quick as a simiar power / weight RWD. A poor example of a FWD is horrid at anything above walking pace, and should be avoided if you value the driving experience.

Take some of the above FWD's for a test drive (thought the Focus RS will be out of your price range) and you'll be surprised how much fun they can be. I'm not about to start a FWD vs RWD thread, as there are already heaps of those. Just don't be blinkered by the uneducated comments from those who have probably never driven a decent FWD. Give one a go and make up your own mind.

My 2c

Buy a nice old ford on lpg for 2k or an excel or any shitter daily you can think of that you have checked out and is reliable, ignore status and all that immature crap associated whilst being on your p plates.

Obey the road rules don't muck around, while your friends are having trouble with the cops and losing licenses (believe me you will see it) you just sit at home and save your money for when you come onto your full license and get something that is worth it. I rate dc2 type r's I always wanted one when I was on my P's however I never had enough money to ever buy one.

After seeing two friends with dc2's lose their license for long periods of time, not to mention more people then I can count on two hands that I knew from back in school having lengthy suspensions it really is a good feeling when you go through your p plates with an unblemished record. Also knowing that you have gotten your full license early whilst the others who decided to spend a packet on non turbo fun cars are waiting an extra year or two to drive a turbo +. Not a good feeling because you are looking down upon them as if you are better but more of a proud feeling that you resisted all the immature stuff, held your patience and stuck to a nice daily to do what you have to do without any hassles.

With how much the police are targeting p platers and even all license drivers now, especially in an import or 'tuner' car it seriously is not worth having a nice/fast car on your p's.. Unless your planning on doing the occasional track day but even then on the street where are you gonna go? 1st to 2nd and then quickly hit the breaks when you get to 60? I could do that in my Getz. Police are showing no mercy for p platers at the moment you just need one slip up and you could be looking at that car in the driveway for over 6 months, not to mention having to commute on trains and bus's wasting countless amounts of time dealing with our transportation system.

My younger brother will take the car once i can upgrade to a turbo anyway. Reasons I want a car are i want a manual, something more fun and something smaller with a smaller engine to save me petrol.

Completly understand and agree with what your saying hence me not wanting a non turbo skyline, supra or silvia.

Anyway by far the most recomended car has been the mx5 so im gonna look at some of them. Another plus to them that no one has mentioned so far is that heaps of older guys own them ie. they are not as trashed as your average dc2 or s13.

I just sold an rx8 for 4700, would not recommend, they are at the age that all their motors are shagged, they basically do the rotary equivalent of a head gasket, second hand motors are 5k, exchange rebuilt 7k, as much as the car is worth, and fuel economy lol
