Helicoil Expert Required For Ej20E Timing Tensioner Rethread.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys in a very desperate situation.

Was replacing the water pump on the girlfriends 99 RX EJ201 N/A impreza and when I attempted to reassemble the timing belt etc. the thread on the tensioner pulled some of the alloy out with the bolt. :@

My biggest dilemma is I am more than capable at doing the majority of mechanical work, but I have never attempted a heli-coil and nor do I have the equipment.

Any one able to help out or suggest someone fairly low cost. I'm not concerned if you are not a qualified mechanic as I am neither just someone that knows what they are doing.

The bolt diameter is 10mm.

The car is located in Runcorn

Please PM me or sms 0415 054 949.

I wouldn't recommend helicoiling it as it's a fairly important bolt. I've had a couple pull the threads our after their 2nd or 3rd belt change, that whole piece under the aircon pump unbolts and can be changed with a second hand item.

actually helicoiling is quite common in aluminium, as the helicoil in the aluminium is actually stronger than just a thread in aluminium. Something to do with the surface area of the helicoil on the aluminium.

Its not all that hard to do really, go buy a helicoil pack, it gives you a tap, you drill the hole out to the size it specifies, tap the hole with the provided tap and then wind the helicoil in and snap the little tang off once its in as far as you want it.

In saying that, if you can change the part as said above id be more inclined to do that as you want to ensure its all drilled and tapped square, and its alot harder to do that when its on the car compared to a drill press or mill.

+1 to the above post, helicoil is piss easy, drill, tap, coil, snap the end off. Can be difficult to do while in an engine bay, get it out of the car so you can drill square
