Hey Guys,

I have a 2005 250GT Four door Automatic, the gearbox seems a bit sluggish and when at high RPM it makes a starnge honk noise when changing gears, was considering upgrading to a better gear box or transmission, forgive me i have very limited knowledge on cars, any suggestions one what i should get/do and how much it may cost me to do so.

Thanks

Well its had a major service like 6 months ago when i got it, but it was still making strange Honk noise, and lol yes i meant shiFt lol, and no i havnt checked transmission fluid, might do that when i get home.

Had a look at the transgo shift kits, seems awesome although i dont believe they make kits for my gear box ive got RE4R01B in my car, and it only appears to support the RE4R01A

Take it to transmission specialist, change what you need to on the gearbox.

Get a transmission cooler if you haven't got one already.

No need to get an entire new transmission. I've had my transmission rebuilt in my old R33 skyline after it started slipping gears, and the improvement was just excellent once done, had a shift kit/stall converter etc + a cooler on it too.

I had my RE4R01B trans upgraded by a local Adelaide place. they put all new full internals from a stagea turbo trans (7 plate instead of 5) and their own trans kit for about $2500. even as a 2.5 litre motor it chirps the wheels between gears

the RE4R01B trans is almost identical to r33/r34 except for the input shaft

the R01A trans parts are not interchangeable as far as i can tell

Thanks for all the imput guys really appreciate it, upgrading the Gearbox sound like the best bet/cheapest option, anyone know if the honking sound it makes when on high RPM is a faulty Gearbox or is that just the way it is when going fast? how much roughly does a shift kit cost to buy and install?

Wonder if they used the correct fluid when they did this "full service"

Buddy, a shift kit isn't going to fix your gearbox if its rooted. It's going to make it more rooted. Check the fluid, properly, when the car is hot. Go from there.

yeah an auto trans specialist should be putting it on a hoist, removing the access panel and valve body to inspect the internals before doing any upgrades. a shift kit will put lots of extra load on the components and break the weakest part

cool will deffinately get it checked out before any upgrades are to be done thanks everyone for all the imput they have given me, next step is to see a good trans speacialist
