Oh ok did say on the vin plate was rb20det so maybe it's been added on yeah I was concerned about the rust I had seen photos of it but as I'm a panel beater I wasent to worried its not very big but has got a hole in it ill be cutting it out at some stage and putting a new section in and respray the hole engine bay but that is really the worst of it so I am happy if I'm right your the guy that Zach brought his laurel off the black one?? Well hoping to cut the little bit out of his shell to put in after I cut the front right out of it to repair the damage from his crash it ain't good for anything else been a good doner car lucky to have it!

that would be me :) , so you're from Tassie?! . yeah i saw the pics of what zach did to the old girl . just be careful because they're well known for rusting out around the window (the black one had but i sort of repaired it (im a panel beater too :P ) . careful not to break the front window btw , they're hard to get!

yeah mate from launceston yeah well i put the new apron on the front and he wanted to take the front tubs out so just got to welb some more supports on the front to help with that its looking alot better tho so zachs done it in the same area?? his seems to be good for no rust little bit has started in the back window but will fix it before it gets worse.. i could imagine the windows would be hard to find like most things haha im a little worried about finding a crossmember for the gearbox and tail tailsharft to fit :/

most definitely , the longer you leave it , the harder it is to fix . Gearbox cross member is r33 in memory . all of the driveline is interchangable with skyline basically , the body panels and trim are the hard bits . feel free to come down and swap me for one of my r32 sedans lol

well this weekend made the start on the laurel took it for its last drive for while as i start fixing things up getting ready to go over the pits for rego

things to do:

fix exhaust manifold leak

fit new steering rack boots

fits lights,horn

try to find out whats going on with the power steering

need to check over the car and check the cams and make sure it has actually got the poncams in it and find out whats going on with the computer and what it is as i looked and looks like a stock r33 but as he said had a ems but was told the ems may of been cut in to the loom like a chip so hoping i didnt get shafted on that but still got it for a good price and cant complain about that

will put more pictures up later once i slip rocket covers off get some pictures of the cams and try to find some numbers on them and try and find out what they are also as soon as i get it back going going to have the sniffer put on it just to make sure everything is running safe

yeah think ill just do that took the manifold to the machine shop today to see about getting it fix and since it had warped 4mm out on each side that fixing it would make it very thin so ive decided to scrap the dirty cheap china manifold and get something good as everything else is good quality on the car so now ive gotta make a decision on what sort of manifold to go with

suggestions very welcome ;)

    • Well, yeah, the RB26 is definitely that far off the mark. From a pure technology point of view it is closer to the engines of the 60s than it is to the engines of the last 10 years. There is absolutely nothing special about an RB26 that wasn't present in engines going all the way back to the 60s, except probably the four valve head. The bottom end is just bog standard Japanese stuff. The head is nothing special. Celicas in the 70s were the same thing, in 4cyl 2 valve form. The ITBs are nothing special when you consider that the same Celicas had twin Solexes on them, and so had throttle plates in the exact same place. There's no variable valve timing, no variable inlet manifold, which even other RBs had either before the 26 came out or shortly afterward. The ECU is pretty rude and crude. The only things it has going for it are that the physical structure was pretty bloody tough for a mass produced engine, the twin-turbos and ITBs made for a bit of uniqueness against the competition (and even Toyota were ahead on the twin turbs thing, weren't they?) and the electronic controls and measuring devices (ie, AFMs, CAS, etc) were good enough to make it run well. Oh, and it sounds better than almost anything else, ever. The VR38 is absolutely halfway between the RB generation and the current generation, so it definitely has a massive increase in the sophistication of the electronics, allowing for a lot more dynamic optimisation of mapping. Then there's things like metal treatments and other coatings on things, adoption of variable cam stuff, and a bunch of other little improvements that mean it has to be a better thing than the RB26. But I otherwise agree with you that it is approximately the same thing as a 26. But, skip forward another 10 years from that engine and then the things that I mentioned in previous post come out to play. High compression, massively sophisticated computers, direct injection, clever measuring sensors, etc etc. They are the real difference between trying to make big power with a 26 and trying to make big power with a S/B50/54 (or whatever the preferred BMW engine of the week is).
    • Is the RB26 actually that far off the mark? Honestly from where I'm sitting a VR38DETT is not actually that much more advanced than the RB26. Yes, there is a scavenge pump on the VR38, it's smarter in a number of ways but it's not actually jumping out to me as alien technology. Something like a B58 or V35A-FTS on the other hand has so many surprising little design features that add up to be something that just isn't comparable.
