ok now i'm just getting my rebuild finished off and starting to get everything back together.

I have a r33 turbo (maybe?) that has been hiflowed to a t3/t4 core of unknown specs. all i can tell you is the comp wheel is around the 70mm mark and the housing looks way too small for it 50mm intake 43 outlet (some stock nissan one with 16v on it).

The turbine is 52mm.

This turbo was good on my last setup pritty much stock RB25DET with all the bolt-ons (boosted from around 2500-3000 full boost not too longer after that.)

But my engine has now had these mods that will change the flow of the engine:

-Head ported polished and tweaked in general also i'd like to get 265 or so cams before the engine goes back in.

-forged pistons

-stainless exhaust manifold

-fuel system, intake piping etc

I had the idea that a larger compressor housing would free the intake up alittle. maybe a to4e or 3037 housing? also maybe a bigger a/r turbine housing to cope with the new top end the engine will have.

I would like some input from people that have played with turbo set-ups.

Just keep in mind this is a street/mountin/drift car not drag so i want to keep the powerband in the 3.5-8k rpm range.

Hey isnt 16V on the standard Nissan turbo mean that its a Rb20 Turbo?

I thought Rb25 turbos were 45V

if so that would explain why your compressor cover seems to small

Sorry cant be of much help cause Im also still looking for info on this subject

I think most people with highflows use a T04 front cover, .60 A.R

Not sure if there is a difference between the T04b and T04E front cover if they're both .60A/R

Very interested on your turbo setup though, found out what the specs of the wheels are yet?

yeah i was under the impression that my turbo was a rb20 one to start with but the only thing that hasn't been replaced is the housings.

Here is a pic of the comp wheel. i would like to find out more specs for it so i can get the best kind of housing for my application.

Turbo housings cant be all that much new from garret or a supplier can they?

I'm pritty sure i'm going to go for a t04e/b housing as you suggested as that seems the normal thing that goes on the front of hiflows.

That comp wheel looks like a TO4B in -24 or -25 , the major or base diameter is 2.75" or 71.1mm . In order to get the cover on it they must have used a T3 back plate . I cannot stress this enough , we must use matching sets of compressor wheel/back plate/compressor cover or housing . TO4B compressor wheels are a flat back design where T3 and TO4E have a sort of flare shape with completly different offsets . The base diameters are T3 2.367" (60.1mm) , TO4B 2.75" (71.1mm) , TO4E 3" (76.2mm) . By going down a size in cover and backplate all you achieve is screwed up compressor efficiency . To have any hope of working properly is needs the correct TO4B comp cover and back plate , do yourself a favour and flick the 8 bladed wheel (bad) for a six bladed TO4B wheel to get better response and flow .

This sorts out the compressor side , if the turbo has the non standard turbine in the original exhaust housing this also won't work . If it has the usual TA34 turbine it needs the matching housing with its unique waste gate flap/plate . Your dump pipe won't fit it either . It can be made to work but only if you know someone with lots of second hand bits and an idea of what works and what dosen't . Certainly using the 6 blade compressor with the B type cover and backplate is a HUGE step in the right direction . If I had my way I'd line up all the 8 blade comp wheels on the rails and turn them into bottle caps under the wheels of our locomotives .

Thanks for your input discopatato you seem to have seen this before.

Its just you make it seem like it wont work at all and it worked well for years as just a "Stock replacement" kinda thing and i was very happy with it.

Just to add a few other things. I belive that i got a whole new wheel to wheel core installed in my old turbo not just a rebuilt vl/vg30 one (but i guess its almost the same thing anyway).

Now i'm looking for more power when the engine goes back together with forgies etc and just for the time being i was going to put this turbo back on till i get something else later (GT30 or something). So i dont really want to spend a alot of cash to change a old style turbo into a new one.

So you think the whole compressor setup needs be changed to T04b gear?

I'm guessing this would cost at least $500+ to do at a turbo shop but would this increased flow without touching the turbine cause it to surge?

Do you know of anywhere that supplies the turbo housings cheap in aus because i'll have to get new stuff unless i can find a second hand turbo to gut.

Hello Mesmer , no the 6 blade wheel is less likely to surge than the 8 blade . Mind you if theres a GT30R in the wings (again only use the 6 blade compressor version) I would not waste any money on the current hybrid . You would not open it up without overhauling it so save up the bucks for a real turbo , trust me you will not regret it .
