NP, I remember hearing about if there is 3 or more items its compulsory regency inspection.

I know a guy who got done for 2 things, ride height and a guage inside the dash (he was told it should be on the pillar!) - he only had to present the car at the local police station for defect removal.

Like so many things, it just never is the same. I think you will find all the things mentioned above will vary depending on the inspector. I know of a guy who was passed with a recirc aftermarket BOV. Another who wouldnt be passed because the inspector didnt know what the little black box under the dash was - it was his cruise control.

I was told by the copper that defected my Cortina years ago (too low) that suspension was an automatic regency item, as were seatbelts, and other things considered "safety issues" (like wheel spacers etc).

Would be nice if there was clearly spelled out legislation, readily available, so it was easy to find out EXACTLY what was and wasn't ok, so there was no confusion, and maybe some consitency (as it seems everyone wants).

A friend recently bought a 33 from a car yard on South Road. The car yard owner had picked the car up at an auction in Sydney and therefore had to have the car registered in SA before he could sell it. He told us that he simply took the car to the Sturt Police Station and it was inspected and then passed with an aftermarket blow off valve, turbo timer and 20% tint.

Another 33 he had at the yard was also passed at Sturt Police Station on a different day with extremely dark tint, EBC, blow off valve and turbo timer. The only thing he was told to remove was the dual A-pillar pod gauges.

I'm not sure why there was not a requirement for him to have these cars Regency inspected as I thought was the requirement for cars that come from interstate.

Well my Boss owns a Sprinter and he went to Sturt Cop Shop and they said he had to go to Regency...... And it doesn't have a loud exhaust or anything like that, nothing to warrent it not passing, so how does that work?

Just plain inconsistencies, there's no explanation for it I guess :confused: Depends how they feel on the day.

I know what you mean though, my friend moved here from Melbourne and she had to take her stock as a rock Laser to Regency to get it inspected before she could get it registered. She had to pull her tint off on the spot before they would let her car through.

Thats what it says which I find strange as down at the local police station they have a defect inspection car park.  

I'm registering my car back at my oldies place.

Smart thinking. This is also another way out. The other thing to do is to be really nice if you get defected and not make an issue out of it. Reason being is that you want them to just defect as little items as possible.

Someone should should stake out the front of Regency and survey the people taking their cars in to find out the circumstances about the defect eg. who defected it, where it was defected, what was the driver doing to get pulled over in the first place, what is the defect etc etc. This way an overall picture could be drawn as to what is happening. No doubt there would be cars that should have been defected but I'm sure there are ones that probably shouldn't have eg Cheeky's.

If the survey was done off the Regency premises then I can't see there would be a problem. Maybe handing people some sort of flyer, with a list of questions and a return email address or PO Box on it could be given to people as they come out. This info could be used in conjuction with the stuff Steve is collecting in the other Regency thread.

The suggestion might be pie in the sky stuff but it would be interesting to do.....unfortunately I don't have the time to do it but someone might.

As far as I know, there is no requirement for interstate cars to go through Regency. I definitely had the option of Sturt. My car passed and it certainly isn't stock. It was almost defected for 35% tints, but I managed to talk my way to a 'formal caution', whatever that is.

At the end of the day, Sturt only care about your VIN, engine number and compliance plate. My 97db exhaust was even ignored (and the inspections are carried out in a tin shed). They also looked past other obvious defects including my turbo timer, A-pillar guage, etc.

What's more, I actually received a couple of compliments on the car. icon14.gif

Hmm, I'm not sure about the whole interstate thing now. As I said above, my friend went to get her car checked at the Sturt police station and they told her they couldn't do it, that the vehicle had to have a full roadworthy inspection at Regency, then other people get thru Sturt without a problem. Wonder what the actual rules are on this?....

I end up throwing hammers spanners you name it. :(

Im beginning to prepare my self mentally for my own engine removal/install.. :)

It should go faster as well because I always end up with spare bolts/nuts for some reason.. = less weight. :)

The requirements for a steering wheel are that it be ADR approved and must be a minimum diameter which i think may be around 350mm, Regency state that the only aftermarket steering wheels that are ADR approved are some Momos. I have only discussed older vehicles with VIS so im not sure what their ruling is when the vehicle came originally fitted with a airbag steering wheel.

If fitted with airbag, it must have one regardless of which wheel is fitted.

As you point out, only some momo steering wheels. Its initeresting though that momo no longer stamp the e on their wheels (european equivelant of adr approval) because the european rules no longer require the stamp if the wheel has been approved.

Also interesting that STis have Nardi steering wheels fitted. I wonder if all the STIs out there would get failed by regency????

thanks for the contact details, I did some investigating about trade plates, and one of the reasons you can use them is to drive a car to 'a workshop or place of repair' - so the guy I know who got raped at the defect station driving to morpowa on trade plates has a pretty good case:)
