powerfc (or wolf 3d) with airflow meters will give a better tune and much easier to tune as well. the powerfc does have air intake temp correciton but you need fc datalogit to access it and adjust it, you can't change its settings from the normal hand controller. but the powerfc will honour and use it, the stock gtr plenum temp sensor i think it is.

what was your reason for blowing away the airflow meters?

baseed on my own personal experience, i'd say go with the best ecu you can afford, eg MoTeC or Autronic, these computers have given the closest to OEM tune you'll get from an aftermarket ecu and should be able to still comply with emmissions regs if tunes properly (and the rest of the car is set up properly) as well as control most of your cars other functions such as boost control etc. I know they are expensive, but in my opinion they are worth every cent.

I have lost a couple of motors now and the only thing that is the same and let me down every time is the Aytronics computer and cdi unit(sux's ass).A large number of gtr's and gts skylines in Perth run wolf v4+ and have had no problems.C-red gtrrrr has a wolf installed and is running 670 hp,nd4spd runs 687hp and also runs wolf with no problems.I also have heard all the rummors but have not seen them first hand,i have spoken to many people with the wolf's installed and all seem happy and wouldn't use anything else, ask the end users in perth and if its all good give it a go.i just cut the autronics out of my car with a pair of side cutters and would strongly recommend any other computer besides Autronic.

There are also a lot of other people in perth that have pulled out autronics because of there bad experience's John Walligan with the gtr that races at wannaroo,Koong with the 26 powered 240z,1000hp supra at sst just to name a few, there are many others.

My 2 cents  :D

Most of the cars I've seen run Autronic computers have pretty much run flawlessly, so I'm surprised to read your comments. although most of the cars I've seen using Autronics have been V8's.

Only PPL that bag Wolf is PPL that dont sell them.

Jades Blue GTR ran 11.2 last nite with a single plain bearing turbo and a Wolf plugin so we didnt tune that to soft and the most powerful GTRs in perth have Wolf .ND4SPD 682rwhp

GTAAH 671rwhp,Jades GTR 452rwhp Adam brewers GTR 458rwhp did have a PFC(402rwhp) but has a wolf now (the PFC is for sale if you want it) Got boost did 11.5 with a wolf and 2wd. Fabs GTR has a Wolf And Danny Now is changing .No GTR in WA has done what ND4SPD has done and its done many very hard miles. No other GTR in WA has matched the top few of these cars with any other ECU. Fact. Next best had a Jap tuned ECU and exploded at 550rwhp so dont believe what ppl say if they cant come up with cars to prove it.Gav Beers GTR is now going wolf also so we have his PFC for sale.

We have Shootout graphs and time cards plus many trophys and the cars for all to see.

sorry to dig up this old thread, but (Steve) it's clear the Wolf can produce some serious horsepower #'s, but for the everyday driver (like me) with just mild mods (N1's + 1 bar boost), is it suitable?

Im awaiting the install of my V4 plug-in, but keep hearing stories that they're a pig on cold-starts & idle. Is this an old fault, or as a result of bad tuning?

Wow, this thread is back from the dead !!

You will find a lot has changed in 12 mths including ND4SPD now running an Apexi D Jetro and Danny ( GT500) is putting either a SM4 or Apexi in.

Seems a lot of people have had a rethink on the old wolf/autronics debate now a few truths have come out.

We have seen some ... err... interesting Autronic wiring on a few cars these last 12mths which go a long way to explaining some issues...

John Wholagans GTR doesn't run within 2 secs a lap of the Autronic equipped 180 SX we manage btw. :)

Cheers

Ken

my opinion is

*for street the APEXI pfc is the pick of the bunch for easy and price (the units are tried and tested and can run hugh hp like a breeze)

*for full race prep motec /autronic (where you need the extras)

my 2c

ps we are starting to use EMS on a few different cars and are finding good results (just food for thought)

Autronic is the pick of the lot as far as engine tuning is involved. The motec datalogging is very nice thought. Autronic is also much more expensive than the wolf, microtech and PFC. Its fuel calculations using VE is also much more accurate and consistent than motec. Autronics closed loop PID controlled boost is the 1 of the best I've seen and much better than motec direct plug in computers.

Most of the figure quoted in this thread are peak power, thats a shitty indication of a tune. Any decent tuner can tune peak power - give it the amount right fuel, advance timing till it pings and take a degree out for safety. Its the drivability, cold start, hot start, idle and cruise which most time should be spent tuning because this is the engine will spend 95% of its time.

In my opion the best options is to retain the standard ECU and get it retuned. That way you retain the knock sensor function, real closed loop cruise, diagnostics, transient throttle drivability and limp home mode.

That's a Power FC:cheers:

What ever ecu you get make sure you have some sort of knock sensor utilization.

Be it via the ECU or an aftermarket item, just make sure you have some sort of knock readout.

All it takes is a slightly blocked fuel filter or a bosh pump that decides its had enough and you will be hammering it around and not even know its knocking/leaning out.

Pop there goes your motor.

For the street where you don't need datalogging I personally like the PowerFC.

It is possible to buy the software for the PowerFC that allows datalogging, if thats the case you may as well have bought a Motec/Autotronic to start off with.

Can the Wolf3d have one of its inputs to give some sort of feedback from the knock sensors?

Its weird how you guys have a WOLF3D/Autronic debate.

In newcastle, its Microtech / Autronic.... maybe because we have RX Engineering here and they are the bomb with Microtech.

Microtech worked wonders for my old car, but as has been said, don't bother too much about what people say for small points. The number one issue is, who will tune it for you, then get what they tune.

Hmm one point to consider is does it have closed loop facility?? I know my microtech doesn't and i loath it for that...

If i had my time again i would definately go PFC D-jetro (prolly don't even need d-jetro).

also, with the knock sensors if my ecu doesn't have a knock sensing facility, what can i use to monitor them with the factory sensors?

No the standard ECU MEC R-2**. I'm in the middle of writing some software so you can tune amost any nissan in real-time. Software should be available by the end of the year hopefully. This is what the Japanese do - aftermarket whats that?

Its possible to get huge numbers out the standard ECU while retaining alls its functions. Mods included - new injectors(have tuned 740cc in a sr20det ran and cold started fine), new airflow meters(z32, q45,ect) cams, new turbo's. My boss tuned a RB26dett with 740cc injectors and a pair of Z32's AFM and N1's it made close to 400rwkw on std ECU. I'm in the middle of upgrading my r32 GTR hoping for the same type of numbers on the std ECU as well.

You're in Brisbane only, there are plenty of Power FC tuners all over the country. Unless you are going to give your software away, it is useless for anyone who can't get to your shop.

So the answer remains Power FC.

Thats the point I'm trying to right software to distribute it to appropriate tuning shops.

i'm also guessing this will only work on r32 (as they are remappable) as i believe the r33 computers are locked and can not be remapped

It hardly seem worth 6 months of work when you can buy a unit with hand control for under a $1000 that is plug and play and will achieve everything you trying to achieve (the pfc is a fully program std computer Plug and play using all std equipment and sensors with the bonus of the hand controller interface for tuning and fault finding)

Of course there will be a charge as there is with any tuning software. There's a market there for most of the people there that dont want rediculous power levels and dont want to spent $1200 bucks for a computer. We are hoping the chip will retain for $400 and do a better job than a PFC.

So please tell us where the pfc will be surpassed by this chipped std unit as we would be very interested advantages

    • Yes...but look at the numbers. There is a tiny tiny fraction of the number of Joules available, compared to what is used/needed. Just because things are "possible" doesn't make them meaningful.
    • Thanks for taking the time to post that ! If anything changes or happens please do update us.
    • Somehow Vertimass/Oak Ridge National Labs has figured out a catalyst that can convert ethanol into C9-C10 hydrocarbons in basically a single step without ending up with a bunch of ethylene or similar waste products: https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2023224867A1/en I still don't think anything like this will keep us from needing to transition to EVs regardless along with all kinds of other electrification, but things like this will go a long way towards alleviating the problem of how to electrify things like planes. Renewable diesel is seemingly an easier problem as well, Chevron is already running refineries for the stuff and the primary feedstock is tallow and other waste fats from agriculture.
    • Ok so I have sorted everything with my uniclutch and  i can offer up a bit of feedback and some things that might help others.    I found problems with factory damper line. Weird shit and had trouble with peddle adjustment    I used this https://au.gktech.com/products/r33-gts-t-skyline-braided-clutch-line?_pos=2&_sid=22b01b9b9&_ss=r Also when adjusting peddle leave a bit of play. You can get into a over stroke condition easy.. Make sure you can push the slave forward after adjusting to confirm fluid can return to master then you will need to pump it up heaps…..not sure why but that’s how it is.    last thing the splined adapter is machined perfectly. If your input shaft is old like mine was I would put a bit of valve grinding paste on it and stroke it like a 15 year old. Just to give it a tad more clearance and to better match it to the spline.    reason is on a near flat shift I have had situation where the peddle returns a millisecond after you lift from the clutch. No slip or anything but I reckon this is due to tolerance on the spline being way tighter than stock clutch and binding for a sec. I think this will go away but also my spline was old. Box is old so I guess I should have checked better. It’s a super neat fit.    it feels light as and holds awesome without any noise
