J.money
First post and new to the forum game. I'm new to skylines and turbo cars and all this stuff so getting a fair bit of help and guideance from a mate. My plan is to build a race car and do some track work and really wanna have a go at Tarmac rally here in WA. So anyways went out and bought my self an rb26 to start with and have since done a bottom end rebuild and got my mates old man to cut the diff off the sump and got a hold of a tomei baffle and organizing an oil return at the moment. Also bought lots of other cool shit here and there for the motor. I got a garret t04z all ready to go for it as well. So now I've gone out and bought an r33 4 door and starting stripping the engine bay and trying my hand at a bit of stitch welding to strengthen that bad boy up and getting ready to lay some paint hopefully next week at some stage. Got a couple of other bits with the car like tein coilovers and an orc twin plate clutch. Got a few pictures here and there but not sure how much stuff people are gonna wanna see till it all starts to come together. I'll search through and maybe take some current progress snaps and post them up to show whats happening with it. Calsonic14U
Interesting choice for a race car being a 4 door. Not bad choice with the 26 just make sure you address the oil starvation issues the 26's get at constant high RPM. Any pics are good pics. I had photos of my 32 when it was only a shell lol all dirty and stuff. That way you can do what many people do and if you cant be bothered reading long updates you can always browse the pretty pictures Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/420800-r33-4-door-rb26-race-car/#findComment-6769060 Share on other sites

J.money
It's industrial modeling clay. I'm going to shape it all up and once I'm happy with it I'll take a mold from it and remove all the clay. Cool mate, thought it looked familiar! I'm actually a clay modeller, I've done something similar making a spoiler for my z32. Its sitting in the mold now but just need the time to remove the clay & make a part. Finally dawned on me that I was making entire cars at work, shouldn't be too hard to do a spoiler! Do you have any experience clay modelling or is this your first project? cheers, Tim Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/420800-r33-4-door-rb26-race-car/#findComment-6778624 Share on other sites
J.money
That's awesome. It's my first project but I would really like to get into car body design as a job so I'm going to swap from studying architecture to 3D design and hopefully that'll get me on the right track. So any tips and tricks would be great! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/420800-r33-4-door-rb26-race-car/#findComment-6778796 Share on other sites
lidz
Where are you located? If vic I'd suggest trying to get into industrial design at Monash Uni's Caulfield campus, that's the path I took. Studied Industrial Design & specialised in transport design. Monash are actually the only place in the country where you will be taught clay modelling as part of your course, Holden helped set up a clay room & your actually taught by their chief of modelling Mike Chester (now former, stepped aside a couple months back). Personally the plan was always to be an automotive designer but come graduation nobody was hiring designers but Ford wanted a clay modeller, I'd really enjoyed making my quarter scale model & was recommended to them (as was a mate) & we both ended up with jobs. Haven't looked back, did nearly 6 years with Ford & now working for VW. A lot more scope to travel as a modeller & better coin. That said I still sketch a little, just in case... Not too sure what 3D design involves, is that your uni's version of product design or are we talking a more comp based course? Could be perfect if your taught Alias modelling & looking to go down that path. Plenty of work, plenty of travel & again good coin. Definitely more relevant than architecture though! Check out my build thread on aus300zx, has got the full process of my spoiler documented & shows you some of the tools used. http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=317619&highlight=journal Are you using automotive clay (kolb, chavent, etc) or is it something different? & any questions mate just fire away. J.money
I'm from Perth and the 3D design is the closet course I can find to industrial design. It's very much based around product design and I think has specific units for transport design but that's the best I can find in my area. Yeah is chavant clay I'm using. I'll swing over and have a look at your build and I'm sure I'll find some useful stuff! lidz
cool mate, sounds like the way to go then. & at least a course like that your trained up in design, alias, model making, etc so really opens your options career wise. Chavant's what we used at Ford & what I used for my wing, you'll get a good result with that. It's very hard & you can get a really nice surface with it. What are you using to heat it up before applying? I bought an old pie oven which worked great, nice & cheap & can get it up to 65 degrees fairly quick. Stanley surforms are pretty good for roughing in the shape, might be worth grabbing a couple different ones from your local hardware shop. So how'd you source your clay, is there suppliers over there or is it through uni? J.money
I've just been using a heater lamp and taking layers off. It's slow but has been doing the job so far. That sounds like a pretty good plan. I'll go suss it out. Yeah I've just found a local modeling shop that have been able to get a hold of it for me. And I see using like a pinstripe tape is a good way to follow my body lines and help as guide for the shape I'm after? lidz
Yeah heat lamps going to be slow haha! Cheap pie oven off ebay is the way to go, otherwise plan b is a microwave. Again probably better to find a used one as chavant's got a fair bit of sulfur in it so don't really want to be cooking food in it after. Just do little bits at a time in a container, you'll have to use trial & error though to suss out how long for. Should be heaps quicker than the lamp. As for tape there's 4 types used in my thread. Black tape is photographic tape, should be fairly easy to track down & comes in heaps of widths. Green tape is a 3m masking tape & works brilliant around tight radius's but shouldn't be a huge issue for you doing a guard. It sticks the best out of all of them though. The light brown & blue tapes are both like a rice tape, blue is a brand called kamoi & the brown is nichiban. thejedilestat
Is your wide body going for a GTR feel? It's coming along nice I must say keep up the good work. J.money
Yeah I guess it'll be like a more aggressive gtr style but built to suit the body lines of the 4 door. Thanks for the positive feedback so far! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/420800-r33-4-door-rb26-race-car/#findComment-6779680 Share on other sites
