Sloppy Gear Changes

Hey guys,

So I'm back with my sloppy/slappy gear changes.

The car feels terrible to gear down, reversing and taking off.

I replaced the diff with another that didn't have backlash (still stocker) and I still have an issue.

What happens is when you down shift it clunks from the rear of the car as you clutch out. Same happens in reverse and sometimes taking off and just while clutching and driving.

Ideas? Heeeellllppp

You should get access to the tailshaft and check backlash with the car in gear, as well as driveshafts etc. Then you can narrow it down better.

Back lash is just how much I can move the driveshaft when it's in gear with the handbrake on? Jacked up?

Also other than backlash what else could this be?

And is backlash only caused by the diff?

What type of clutch plate do you have - solid centre or sprung centre?

You might have to learn to heel/toe the downchanges, or maybe even double clutch.

CV joints, rear hub splines, CW+pinion, diff internal gears.....all places where backlash hides.

The diff that I picked up had no slack in it from what I could tell.

Maybe time to take it to a steering and suspension place to get the rest checked out

Not sure to be honest it was one that was made from a clutch place in Sydney

It has springs in the plate so does that mean sprung?

yeah pedders will go over your whole car and give you a big list of what needs replacing including stuff that doesnt need replacing
