I've heard some horror stories when it comes to steam cleaning, maybe it will be ok for the bottom end but maybe just be cautious towards the top end. From what I know degreaser and high pressure hose are excellent so long as you stick to the bottom end. I'm not sure what the best way to go is at the top. I was actually going to ask a similar question.

What is the best way to get the engine all cleaned up without having it removed?

above is true but it depends on how you are cleaning it under what circumstances....if its still in the car then petrol would be a great idea but will need to scrub it....

degreaser is great but will need to let it sit for 15mins or so then hit it again with degreaser and scrub....can hose off with a water under normal pressure and should be no issues aslong as you allow drying time and are super careful

chemtech ct18

its the best stuff ever. It is a detergent based degreaser. You duke it and spray it on, the longer you leave it the better it works. Doesn't harm anything.

Anyone who uses it is amazed. I wash mountain bikes/motorbikes/cars anything with it. It rules!

How would that chemtech go if used to wash your car? If you use a pressure gun to get it on than high pressure wash it off would it clean the car good?

Probably best to use something a lot more mild for the paint work.

.

it is heaps good washing car. That's what I use.

Use a high pressure cleaner very gingerly on the paint/ bodywork, especially painted plastic, or you could remove the paint too
