Im currently using a set of r32 gtr wheels and changing them back to the originals because the tyres keep scraping and catching on the guards. Since I already use 225/50R16 on the gtr wheels will they continue to scrape and catch like they are now, or by putting them on wheels 1.5" thinner will this stop?

It will stop. The GTR wheels are 8" wide but they also have very different offset that pushes the wheels outward further than GTSt wheels. The GTR wheels only really suit the flared guards of GTRs. If you run 8" wheels on a GTSt you need a little more +ve offset than the GTR wheels so that they don't stick out quite as far. The difference is only about 5mm, but it is enough.

I ran 225/50 on GTSt wheels for a long time. Was fine, so scraping on anything.

225 wide tyre on a 6.5" wide wheel = muffin tops but won't touch the guards nor suspension. 225 is for 7.5-8" wide wheels.

Stick with 205/55/16, you can pick up good tyres in that size.

Decide on your budget first, you can get tyres that cost $100 each and tyres that cost $400 each.
