well

to start off with i have taken the dump pipe turbo and manifold off to replace waste gate,

have since refitted everything, whilst doing up the manifold nuts two slipped... tightened up again thought i had this right now, only to start the car with a massive leak.. i freaked hadn't heard anything like that before, my mate came over and confirmed massive leak somewhere could smell the exhaust,,

so stripped it again - once i got to the manifold alot of the bolts where loose (finger tight) i thought i done then up.

now this is the disappointing part i went to my tuners work shop and asked how much to replace studs/thread then re fit manifold and turbo and dump pipe, and confirmed if this would actually cause a leak, just so loud was had to process.. as mention i aint a mechanic

i was quoted approx $2000 approx 8 hours works..

lucky my tuner is very good other wise i wouldnt go back .

i am not a mechanic i just have a few tools and slowly pulled my set up out and now refitting which i can re fit in 2 hours so you cant tell me the threading and new bolts will take 4 hours?

i instantly called a mobile thread guy - will be doing the lot including new studs 150 - 200.. then i will put it back together my self.

i feel better i have now vented..

I've found that tunners are happy to deal with eletrical and software issues, hate dealing with mechanical problems...

It all depends on what their shop is setup to do and what their main focus is, the shop i use has a dedicated mechanical side and a dedicated tuning side...

It seems, when you know whats going on, and you know what you want, workshops dont want to do it.

Ive been sent away many times when i have asked for a specific thing to be done.

When i go and get a tune ( one day ) im going to keep my mouth shut, and hope they do a good job.

Anyway your better of doing it yourself as some workshops do crappy work, or they can make honest mistakes too.

Peace of mind comes from seeing it done right. If you DIY you can triple check its right.

You aint a mechanic, nor am i, but your getting faster and better with the practice.

Dont give up hope, you can do heaps with not much, cos your human and we have big smart brains.

When i was a youngster i stripped ans rebuilt a whole car on a gravel driveway, paint job too, with very basic tools. its easy.

I bet you got it this time too. If not, i bet you know whats wrong too.

Guys,

I own a workshop in Canberra and can see where you are coming from

To give you an idea what happens with my shop, I normally charge $100/hr labour, in that you get my knowledge that i have learnt over the years of working on import cars, but in saying that if someone comes in asking for advise i am happy to give that, but when people try and tell me how to do something essentially meaning that the job is done by them just using my hand i either turn them around and send them packing or can and have charged them more.

In saying that I am not going to side with either the workshop in question or the customer as it is not beneficial for myself or you.

There can be any reason for them to charge that but it is always up to you to accept that and if you think that's unacceptable then you can refuse it.

If some one refused my quotes i don't take offence to that to me that means they would not want to use my hands and knowledge or experience.

Having peace of mind with work being carried out by a mechanic will always favor the consumer especially with fair trading. If you dont think the work is up to standard either talking to them about it or taking it to Fair Trading will fix that issue.

But overall mechanics do make mistakes or have fked up here and there but for those that what to do the work themselves sure thing good luck on your ventures i hope it all goes well.

well after talking to my tuner looks like he stuffed the quote up -

anyway i got the thread guy to help out (very good bloke)

100 bucks later ready to re fit - then the manifold hardly went on took us ages - never had this issue - anyway it has warped some how - which is the reason why another bolt threaded its self (the warped end would not tighten up would just - sorry it would slowly then to go anyfurther we need more torque then of course failed)

so manifold is off... going to find someone to shim it or what ever plus another new stud.. then try again.......

Have you considerd a good 2nd hand manifold ?

Just thinking of a Plan B (worth a search in FS or a WTB post) before outlaying more cash on a potentially not good Plan A

GTS or GTS-T 33?

Edit: Quick www search - 2nd hand $115. new $400 in Aus on Ebay.

good point i been looming over the weekend and i was gonna be a good option but nothing i could see was the same or close as mine was a good solid custom one - so if i got a different one - i would have the issue of modifying the dump pipe and moving the waste gate and re plumbing back in blah blah -

the engine guys said i would have more issue if i brought a cheap one - plus the guys said it was a good manifold and worth keeping - hopefully when they heat it they can get most of it out so that will drop the price.

but i %100 agree and have looked into it -

  • 3 weeks later...

well car is all back togeather all is well - only thing i am keeping an eye is the copper gasket spray we put in is a little smokey and it is coming from turbo to manifold joint - i am sure it will go away but you never like the look of it. put the same stuff on the mainifold where it joins the block and there is no smoke there maybe seemed to drive perfectly fine maybe it is just the excess burning up

Good chance you just got a little bit of oil somewhere it shouldn't be during the process of removing and refitting the turbo :) if it's an actual leak in the gasket, you'll know about it once you start boosting the car again coz it'll squeal like a bitch on boost :P

    • All I can say Duncan is good luck and I hope that Neil did not run any E85 in Cheryl. I have recently experienced the full spectrum of fuel tank issues in my R33's that had been caused by E85 and contaminated fuel. When you take the cover off the top of the tank and have a look inside you will get an understanding of how easy it will be. Best case situation is clean fuel with minimal contamination. My GTR was like this and it was a very simple operation to just grab the fuel pump carrier bracket and slide it up and out of the tank. My three GTS_T's had different levels of fuel contamination that was probably caused by E85 in the fuel.  In the worst case all of the metal components in the tank had rusted to the point where there were pieces of rusted metal swirling around in the tank. This required the removal of the exhaust, the tailshaft, the complete rear cradle and the fuel tank. The components in the tank were that rusted that it took days to get the fuel pump carrier and the mounting brackets out of the tank. When the tank was finally cleaned, everything inside the tank had to be replaced. With the tank all back together I could then reinstall it in the car along with everything else that had to come out. Good luck and I hope that you find a clean tank.
    • It is a two door. It is black and also still has the OEM wheels and stereo. Exact model would be KR_R32RGFEL_SS According to GTR-Registry.com is a 2 Door Coupe; RB20DE; 2WD no HICAS; MT.F5; (11L) Projector Headlamps and Fog Lights; (12_) Electronic Active Full Auto Air Con (Climate Control); (13-14SS) V Selection -- Which seems to be accurate description of my variant. Will try to upload a few pictures soon. The OEM wheels look like the below image. Image is taken from the goo-net-exchange website.
