Im looking around at the moment for a R32 GTR to use to track (track only car)

Ill be stripping everyting away etc.

The engine is where im a little confused.

Obviusly it will have a rb26.

BUT instead of spending $10,000 + on rebuilding the 26 would it be cheaper to sell that and make a decent 25 /30? or 26 / 30?

Im making the car on a budget and also trying to keep running costs down.

Id hope to get 350kws roughly. And not being a road car id have top mount turbo etc.

Will be used mainly for drags and events of that type.

Opinions plz

Why would you bother trying to build a RB25/30 or RB26/30 when $10,000 can get you a fully built race-spec RB26.

Unless you got time finding a RB25 / RB26 Head and a RB30 Block and can do all the mechanical work yourself...

Plus if you can source all your parts and put it all together...

sorry that was meant to read i dont want to spend $10000 on a rebuild. id really like to get away with it alot cheaper. and thought a 25 / 30 might be able to to that?

Plus if things did go pop it would be cheaper getting another 30 bottom end etc etc

If you crack open anything with the intention of building it for "race", then be prepared to unload at least $10k. For an RB26, start thinking in multiples of $10k. For a 2x/30, built for the same purposes, keep thinking in those terms and then add a little more, because you still need to do oil pumps and manifolds and all that stuff, plus you need to do teh custom work to make it all go together.

If you buy a GTR, give the RB26 a service and start saving your coin for when it goes pop. Then decide if you have enough coin to simply do a refresh+repair build, or if you have enough to go spastic on it.

Alright. But I suspect if you wanted to build a 2x/30, even with modest power in mind, then you'd spend at least $8k to do it in a way that you wouldn't be ashamed of. And that's really only just for the build, not a lot of the other stuff that goes on the outside.

I dunno, I don't think my advice is helping you. I'm just pointing out that when you have the words fast, cheap and reliable, you can only have 2 of them at the same time.

Ah, I see!

But what im thinking is i dont want huge power so i was even thinking just putting a rb25 in it. get the 350kws from it etc

If that's the case, buy a GTS-T (R33 / R34).

Why buy a R32 GTR and put a RB25 Head in it...

Or buy a R32 GTS-T and find a RB25DET from a wrecker...

The only reason i was thinking a 32 gtr is

- 4wd grip

- Lighter factory panels, bonnett / gaurds

- Excellent standard brakes

- Can fit big wheels from factory on wide gaurds

- LOVE the look over GTS-T (i know not a big thing in the scheme of things)

- All the interior etc can be sold at an ok price etc

Sorry to say but $10k isn't going to get you very far.

You need to remember its one thing to build a long engine, but to build a strong engine, ie 'race' strength, factoring in turbo setup, fueling, cooling, clutch, brakes, engine management, tuning, tyres to get the power down etc - Well, you get the drift.

Also, why does track car automatically mean going for a 'top mount' turbo?

The Nissan factory Sumitomo R32 GTR brakes aren't exactly competition spec unless you get a V-Spec / V-Spec II with Brembo's.

Even then for your serious track work, you'd get a decent Project Mu / Endless / AP Racing etc setup (for example)...

But if you still go ahead with the R32 GTR, think of what GTSBoy said.

Clearly - The on-the-cheap build and 350kw power target screams drag special.

Yeah, I'd say that's what he's aiming for...

A budget drag car.

If so, he should just buy a cheap R32 GTR, do a service and take it to the drag strip.

Whatever lets go, just fix that...

Fix it bit by bit or put in the thousands of dollars up front and get something that will last.

Dont get me wrong, I dont want an 8 second car. Im not spending $100, 000 on a car.

Im after something with a little bit of go and stopping to have fun with. That I can keep the upkeep as cheap as possible etc

Just buy a cheap GTR and drag at the strip.

Anything goes, just fix it on the way.

How ever long it last, it will give you a chance to to save up the cash and decide what you want to do.

Building up the RB26 is best to go, I think.

If you start do conversions... Read what GTSBoy said.

:)

IMO SR20VET, 6262 PT, you'll save 100kgs off the front of the car and once you put semis on it the 4WD becomes less of an advantage unless you put LSD in front and mod transfer case

Lighter car means less strain on drive line and with it coming off the front the car will be better balanced and in the mean time drive it till it breaks for some seat time

Interesting thoughts....

As said the other option is going a 32 gtst.

Has anyone run some huge slicks on a GTST? How does it compare with how the GTR hooks up? Dropping from 6 grand in the 33 gtr and only had slight wheel spin?

IMO an R33 GTST is the best budget build type car.

It comes with the strong gearbox, good brakes, good motor and is a proven good performer. All the fruits.

OK its no GTR to look at, and doesnt have rev dump AWD running gear but its also much cheaper to acquire and maintain because it DOESNT have those features to it. GTR's are a money pit and are unreliable. Plus working with a GTST will mean you actually go to the drags with the plan to use some skills, rather than button bash gran turismo. Rev dump flat change brake.
