Autobarn, supercheap, repco.

Most people notice some form of marginal improvement. It is less restrictive.

Im pretty sure i have a panel filter in already, i just assumed they are stock.

Would you say its less restrictive than a pod?

And with panel filters is it true you have to oil them? (people are saying different things)

If you have your stock setup you do indeed have a panel filter already installed, not a highflow panel filter (different to stock)

I Needed a new filter not long ago, so I upgraded to a K&N Highflow.

I think I have noticed a small difference, but I'm yet to give it some at a track etc.. $80.00 from Autobarn, just go in and ask for a HIGHFLOW PANEL FILTER for your r34.

Thanks mate bought one today for $80

I have to say! I can defs notice acceleration has changed, it feels a bit more torquey and the fact that the filter lasts a life time is great, just needs to be cleaned and recoated with oil.

By far the best thing ive done to my car performance wise

I thought that MCM tested this and found that stock > aftermarket panel + pod filters! Ideally something that would simplify your inlet tract so you get less pressure drop from the intake charge would be best

Nah from what ive seen MCM have tested Pod Filters, the reason why you get the drop in power is because they arent getting a constant air feed unless you have it mounted away from the engine down the bottom somewhere, but then u run the risk of sucking up water so its not worth it.

Where as when you have a high flow panel filter, its sitting in your air box and its less restrictive than your standard panel filter.

Your getting a constant cold air feed from the front, ( same as if you were to mount a pod filter in the air box if it fits ).

Personally as soon as i put this in, you can definitely feel a slight difference in acceleration, it picks up a lot better and have this is also supposed to improve your fuel economy because your getting more air through the inlet.

I wouldnt touch a pod filter on a naturally aspirated car

from my experience, the difference between highflow panel filters and stock filters can vary between makes of car. the design of the intake and airbox, as well as the filter itself, will determine whether you will get any gains from changing the filter at all. i've change the filter of various cars i've owned over the years. some hasn't made a scrap of difference, others have made a noticable difference (not a huge difference, but you could notice the difference).

To my mind, doing these kind of mods on N/A Skylines is on the same sort of level as V6 Commodore owners putting on underdriven pulleys and plenum spacers. There may be some tiny tiny gain from it, but really you'd just be better off leaving it and saving your money for other hobbies / your next car.

Ahhh the placebo effect. The only flaw in the otherwise very accurate readings of the butt dyno.

Also, getting more air through the inlet doesn't improve your fuel economy. There is a thing called the air:fuel ratio. Getting more air in means you can get more fuel in and hence make more power, but it doesn't improve economy.

You only have to do it every 50,000 miles

Yes. Until reality ruins theory.

Yeah the perfect fuel/air ratio i believe is 14.7 parts air / 1 part fuel and diesel being 14.5 / 1 but what im saying is having a high flow filter actually increases your fuel economy because its getting a lot more air easily than what your standard filter would. Not saying its a huge difference, but it does. Just like putting in new spark plugs or cleaning them up good.

Well that's stoich, but the perfect AFR depends on the conditions. Ie, 14.7 at full load is gonna be real lean.

Again, in theory, yes. You are improving the efficiency of your motor and therefore your fuel efficiency should improve. In reality, unless you had a super restrictive or dirty air filter, just changing the air filter alone isn't going to make any noticeable difference to your economy. Nor will it really affect your power.

i have an n/a r34 and i had the normal panel filter before and now i have a pod filter with the stock airbox nozzle giving cold air feed.. tbh same shit. i don't think anything changed, same shit. ohh on windy cold (nights)the pod filter sucks in alot of air.. otherwise same shit. you can do it to make your engine bay look *cooler* if that's your thing, but that's about all that will really change hah :D.

also don't spend your money trying to modify your n/a to make it faster, it's such a waste... 1000$ (with ur own labor- spitfire coilpacks and extractors) will do absolute shit only 20hp, so you realize what a waste it is. as for changing exhaust if you find a cheap second hand exhaust for 200buxs then change it, otherwise... all i can tell you is i got literally one of the best exhausts for my n/a 34 which is a 2.5 kakimoto n1 full exhaust and it's so friken loud, that it makes 113db, and is defectable so badly... and your friends will know you arrived when your a kilometer away... and when you stick the silencer in, your car feels like someone is chocking it. :(

Thats why i didnt use a pod, im not one of those p platers that go around "Woah dude check out my new pod! Makes it so much more powerful". Everyone knows how hard it is to actually get a pod to receive cool air, obvs if your doing what your doing is good or sticking it in the standard air box if you can.

Id love a kakimoto exhaust but again yeah im saving money for when i get turbo, thats why im trying to find a cheap pair of GOOD rims cuz atm the previous owner stuck 17 chromies on it..... so idk what to do, im not gonna spend $1000 on rims...

    • I replaced the whole clutch line with the chase bays braided hose, I think it removes that loop, is it the short hose that comes immediately off the slave or is there a drawing in the manual to find what you’re referring to? It was just re-bled when I upgraded to the nismo slave, old slave worked fine but I thought that might help, didn’t change a thing. It’s like the first half of the pedal is pushing air and then when it finally actuates the master the friction zone is tiny. Makes it practically impossible to launch the car
    • Yep, that was one of the things we learned fast in the past with our MX5. When you drive with the top down, you are effectively standing out in the sun, 100% of the time, and not getting in any shade (because roads aren't shaded generally!). Just like standing out in the middle of a field on a sunny 27C day is a bit of a bad plan, so is sitting in a MX5 without sun protection.
    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
