Hey guys,

I finally decided to put up a little info on my R33.

It started life as a bog standard R33 GTST series 2 when I bought the car in 2009.

I put a set of Advan RS racing wheels on it almost straight away which cost me half as much as the car itself....

For my 18th birthday my parents bought me an advanced driver training course with Fifth Gear Motoring at Wakefield Park.

Apparently I wasn't too bad!!! I managed a 1:19.6 on standard wheels and 10 year old Falken something 205 tires.

Everything went downhill from there.... When I get home tomorrow I will update the thread with old and current photos of the car and take you through how it got there and where we are headed!!!

So After my initial track day I started participating in skid pan days and additional track days and loved every second of it. I started training at the skid pan and decided to spend a little money on my car (it seemed like a lot of money at the time, I was in year 12!!!)

I added a HICAS lock bar, HSD coilovers and had some Federal RSR tyres put on my ADVAN RS Racing wheels.

Next time out at the track after the mods I managed a 1:13.9 beating a few much quicker cars!!! I was pretty happy to say the least!

One day at work me and a good mate Adrian were talking about tarmac rallies. Naturally, Targa Tasmania came up in conversation. By the end of the 20 minutes of heated discussion we had managed to convince ourselves that entering my car in Targa Tasmania was a good idea :S

That was mid 2011.....

We had a couple of obvious hurdles facing us on our road to Targa.... the first one was a biggie. Adrian doesn't know his left from right and gets scared in fast cars..... not the best formula for a good navigator!!!!

After lots of deliberating, we called upon another good mate of mine, Thomas Mcready. Thomas works for Fifth Gear Motoring and has a wealth of knowledge and experience driver training. The perfect person to keep me calm doing 250km/h!!!

Now that we have that sorted we come across the next problem. My car is an almost standard 1996 R33 skyline.... certainly no hope for any sort of contention at Targa....

Let the modifications begin!!!

First we stripped the interior to allow a BOND roll bars 6 point roll cage to be fitted.

Next is the fun bit, removing the hot and cold side from the rb25 power plant to make way for some new goodies!!!

I went shopping for some bits to make my little skyline move along a little bit faster.

I bought a Garrett 3076R .86 turbo, Rb25 high mount manifold, Plazmaman intake plenum, Tial blow off valve, ID 1000cc injectors, dual entry rail, surge tank with 044 pump and a Haltech platinum pro plugin ECU.

Then to stop us at warp speed I bought a Ksport brake kit 8 pot front and 4 pot rear 330mm.

We overlooked the clutch in this whole setup.... it still had a fairly standard heavy duty clutch in it....

So out it comes and in with a new NPC single plate 400kw clutch.

This was all completed 2 weeks out from leaving for Tasmania......

This was the moment where LAST MINUTE RACING was born (big thanks to my gorgeous girlfriend jess for thinking up that name)

We still had heaps to do before we left for Tasmania.

Our sponsors, Fifth Gear Motoring, Trojan Motorsports and FEDERAL still had to have their decals applied to the car...

  • 2 weeks later...

We eventually arrived at the port in Melbourne and took up pretty much every car space available :)

After a good 3 hour wait we finally boarded the 'Spirit Of Tasmania' for what we thought would be a nice comfortable voyage to the little island.

Let me give anyone who is thinking of taking the ferry to Tasmania a tip......DO NOT GET AN OCEAN RECLINER!!

It is actually just a badly padded seat that doesn't recline enough to actually sleep.....think economy on a virgin flight.

Anyway...

We got some sleep and were in our car ready to go as they opened the doors on the ferry.

We checked into our accommodation in Launceston Holiday Park and unloaded the car and our things.

Before we left the car actually didn't run properly because the coil packs had decided the day before Targa Tasmania was a perfect time to give up. No one had series 2 Spitfires in stock so John at Trojan Motorsports actually got a set to meet us at our accommodation in Launceston!!! How's that for service!

The next issue we faced was I had a small technicality with my L2 CAMS National Rally license. Basically I needed to do another OLT.....

We protested and CAMS said I could just do a motorkhana.. So off we went to compete in a local motorkhana with a CAMS official looking on!!

Coincidently we actually placed 3rd in this motorkhana and I only did half of the courses :S

It was finally time to go to scrutineering and park the car in the famous silver dome!!

However, as per Last Minute Racing rules nothing went to plan.

Our roll cage apparently wasn't quite up to scratch with the new regulations even thought the logbook had been signed off.

So off to a very kind engineering shop just outside of Launceston who added the necessary pieces to the roll cage, then we got to join the other amazing machines!!!

Our car seemed like a budget racer in comparison to some of the other cars.....probably because it is one :)

Later that day we also volunteered to take place in the Charity rides for the sick kids. This was an amazing experience and it puts a smile on everybody's face when you see how happy the kids are after their ride in the car!!! Well worth the extra time and effort.

Today was the day.... Day 0 of Targa Tasmania, the prologue.

We were nervous as we have ever been, due to our problems over the past few weeks we have done no recce at all and we only put the car together two days prior!!! Here goes nothing....

We lined up for our run at Lilydale which was the first stage to tackle on the day.

Its amazing how many times you need to pee whilst waiting in cue to start your first ever tarmac rally stage....

Eventually we found ourselves at the line.... Thomas gives me a countdown and off we go!!! Wasn't the best of starts but who cares.

At the end of the stage we couldn't contain ourselves. That was the best 2 minutes of our lives!! We eagerly made our way to George Town for one of the best known stages of the rally.

We felt confident for this one, our lack of recce doesn't matter because pretty much every corner is 90 degrees....

We set a really good time on George Town which put us right where we wanted to be against our main rivals.

We made sure we got a good night sleep in preparation for tomorrows racing!!!

We blew through the first two stages on Day 1, cleaning both by a long way. We even made it onto the Targa Tasmania 2012 highlight reel for our handbrake turn after a slight navigation error caused us to go the wrong way at an intersection.

However on the third stage we ran into problems when we started the car to line up.... we noticed a big puff of white smoke right after it fired...we thought it was one of the old GT's that fired up at the same time.

Turned out it wasn't.... When I launched the car into the stage we left a massive loom of white smoke behind us...

We couldn't stop so I just said we would attack the stage and see what happened. The smoke cleared slightly but the car was down on power the whole way.

When we stopped at Sheffield for lunch a few other teams helped us diagnose the fault.....not good news.

The turbo oil seal had disintegrated. Game Over.

Our epic quest was cut short.

We were in Early modern MS.

Unfortunately the immense cost of the event has forced us to move to circuit orientated events, like WTAC :)

I will be updating again shortly with how our new time attack build is coming along!!!

Hey guys,

Kinda forgot I had this build thread on here ha-ha.

So anyway here goes an update:

After the whole targa experience and assessing how expensive it was, I decided to go down another path with my Motorsport.

Initially I had a time attack build planned but my favourite type of Motorsport is wheel to wheel racing so I changed plans yet again....... We are Going Sports Sedan Racing!!

We are going to compete at State Level in 2014 most likely and get the car all sorted and then in 2015 hopefully move up into the Kerrick series and take on Mr Ricciardello and Hossack!!

This is kind of a do it once do it right thing for me because I am doing this to try and prove myself in Motorsport and unfortunately you don't seem to be able to do that without money these days!!!

Anyway, currently uploading a million photos and ill take you guys through what we have done to the car and where we are going with the build.

We at this stage should have the car completed by end of February 2014.

OK so the first thing we did when we decided on a plan was tear the poor little car apart!!

First out with the old Roll cage:

At this stage I changed my plans for the wiring of the car. Initially i was just going to modify the stock loom to lesson the workload. But I like wiring...... So out it comes!!!!

OK so they weren't going to clear with those guards.....
So I bought these:

R33 GTR front guards, risers and bonnet. Hopefully they will clear the wheels and also lose us some weight thanks to the nice light alloy GTR bonnet. Not like the GTST boat Anchor.

The Car was still set up from Targa Tas in 2012 so the ride height was really quite high. The only issue was with those wheels if I lowered the car at all it would sit on the guards at the rear :S

Solution? Get the rear guards cut and re-welded!! Jerry at J Racing has come on board and kindly offered to do the work. So the car retreated back to the trailer and over it went.

While it was away i decided to do a few things to the trailer that I have been meaning to do since I bought the thing. First on the list was to rewire the trailer plug because the Electric brakes would randomly not work depending on how many hours you spent jiggling the connector.

Also i wanted to modify the front cowling on the trailer. i know it is excellent at stopping the front of the car from being damaged but the fact is it makes everything else much more difficult. You have to climb under it to tie the car down!!

While the trailer was sitting there I had an idea for a tyre/wheel rack too..... Something like this just a little bit further up the slope so it doesn't impede where the car sits.

It was time to pick the car up from J racing over in Fyshwick. All of two days after I dropped it off.....

I was surprised at how much they got out of the wheel arch, Gives me heaps more room to play with height adjustment.

So next job was pop the car back on our hoist and rip out the most likely knackered HSD coilovers and play around with ride height until I was happy.

The new wheels will get a treatment of second hand slicks in the next few days so I can pop them on and test fit. But for now I am pretty happy with where it is sitting. We aren't going to be able to get the car much lower without major modifications.

We have some VERY serious bits and pieces to go on this car, I have been lucky that I have some fantastic sponsors behind me helping with the project as I sure wouldn't have been able to do half of this without them!! Mainly TROJAN Motorsport, easily the best Skyline builder in Canberra, or any car for that matter. J RACING, awesome quality and fantastic turn around times, have already started designing aero for me!!!
