Hi Peoples,

I have been broswing the forums trying the gather some info on a good brand of new tyres to buy... So far I seem to keep seeing the following sets being mentioned...

Kumho Supra Ecsta

Bridgestone RE540/RE55TT

Falken - FK 451

I am looking at spending somewhere in the vicinity of $200 - $250 per tyre and I want something that is going to do a reasonable job of holding my car to the road in both the wet and dry.

What have people heard of these threee options/brands... good bad... indifferent... have I missed a good buy?

Let me know :)

Thanks

Falken RT215 are cheap for the level of grip they provide ...but they are street compound tyres, with semi-slick design, not 'R' compound tyres. I used to run Dunlop D01J Formula-R, and the grip level is totally different!

The RT215 may not be ideal if you're concerned about wet roads tho... I suggest the Falken ST115. Great all around street tyre, decent price too, and very quiet.

Dunlop 3000A

I had them on my 16" GTR wheels.

Excellent grip in the dry, and sensational in the wet too, i was surpised how good they were, and they were only 225's aswell. Very impressed.

I had 200rwkw at the time and i had very mininal traction problems unless i launched hard.

They should slot into 200-300 mark, or they might be a tad more.

I cant remember as i paid wholesale for mine and it was $340 odd for a pair.

I would have to recommend the Falken GRB's FK451...

I have an R33 gts-t with 180 rwkw's and I was fairly happy with the grip level (dry & wet) for the price $240 (255x40x17)..

It will still brake traction in first gear (some times).

With cornering, they are a very forgiving and give plenty of notice.

Infact I ended up getting them put on the front as well. Very quiet too.

Regards

Rob

Just put Dunlop 3000A's 235/45/17 on the front of my 33 @ $234 each ,as good as the continentals that were on it (contisport2's) if you have camber issues get a tyre that is not aysmmetric tread so you can swap them from right to left (directional) to wear tread on either side of the tyre. 235/45/17's give you 0.0% difference in overall circumference, so speedo is correct.

    • HKS trigger kit should be very easy to integrate with a Link. It's a 36-2 crank trigger. Hard part is finding the motivation to take off the timing belt and everything on the front of the engine to install it. You also need to cut out a hole in the oil pump housing so the sensor can read the trigger wheel. Changing out the cam sensor for a 24 tooth setup is probably good enough but as others have mentioned depending on what underlying assumptions are changed it becomes more of a problem. Reading the crank state off of the cam is an abstraction that works in the general case, but if you have an edge case it makes less and less sense. There is a GTX2860 gen 2 that can take a compact 5 bolt housing so it's direct bolt on but I'm not 100% sure of what's involved. Peak compressor efficiency drops off a bit on these turbos vs -5s, 77% vs 73% but you get way, way wider region of operation. The -5s have a really strange surge line in their compressor map that is all over the place. If you think the hot side on the -5s aren't open enough you can try the Tomei T550B turbos which a local tuner seems to be happy with:
