Plasti Dip

Hey guys

Just wondering if anyone here has heard or used Plasti dip on there car before?? Was thinking of giving it ago on my brothers car.. whats peoples thoughts and experience with this stuff

I've done my old rims with it, if prepped well enough and given enough coats, it is almost bulletproof (not literally lol). I can high press rinse it with no problems. A guy down here in Melbourne has dipped his blue R34 GTR to white, looks fine from far, but when you go close, you can see the roughness of the surface, but its a cheap and reversible solution to respray.

Is it true that more coats need to be applied to the front lest stone chips muck up the coat?

Is there a hardener for such an area?

Which is better between dip Vs wrap in robustness (regardless of cost differences)?

That's what i was wondering if its better than wrapping it, if its easier, stronger and cheaper and i know it would be easier to remove the plasti dip compared to wrap

my honest opinion is wrap! far more durable! dip is great for interior and other stuff but not as durable on the outside

there was a guy selling similar stuff on here a while back but the thread disappeared...he had more colours than plastidip branded stuff as well...

whats it gunna cost to coat my skyline..im over trying to polish it...plastidip looks pretty ordinary IMO but its probably better than different coloured or scratched panels

oh yeah and plastidipping a car is a 1/4 the cost of wrapping one...

Couple of hundred for labour, or do it yourself.

thats exactly it..its looks good in pictures and such then you see it real life and go...mmmmmmmmmmm!!

maybe not so great..i saw a VE ss in it the other day..i think its the sort of thing you would get over just as quickly as you applied it...and have fun trying to clean bird crap and stuff of it..I worked on a ute a while ago had some parts done...we taped it up cause we were buffing it and when we went to lift the tape off it pulled the dip off, so it does lift quite easily...sure you can hose it and its fine, but one little scratch and air, water gets under it very quickly

Yep that was me that done the Mini Cooper S. Matte black with blaze green rims. It's very easy to work with!

It's the woman's car, she wanted to vynil wrap it but at the cost of wrapping it v.s the cost of dipping it we decided to dip the car.

On the plus side of dip you can peal it off no worries (providing you do 4 or more coats) I have no I dea how easy it is to peal off vynil or what it does to your factory paint underneath.

As far as cleaning/washing goes, you just wash as normal. The day after painting I washed it with a bucket of hot water and car wash stuff with a sponge and scrubbed at it and it didn't budge. I got the high pressure hose onto it too and got about a inch or two away from the nossle and it was fine. We drove to Sydney from Melbourne in it too a few days later. Got plenty of looks (I think it was the blaze green rims) and a few thumbs up. There was no stone chips just bugs! Lots of bugs!!

The plasti dip drys as a rubber coating and so it's got a rubber texture to it and its got that feeling where you just want to pick at it.

I seriously recommend it if you're on a budget. Or want a quick fix from paint fade or even do your whole car if you put a multi colored body kit on.

I plan on dipping my bonnet/boot maybe roof on my 32R in the near future.

I guess there is only one way to find out and that is to give it ago i know for the whole kit your looking at like $800.. but as ARTZ was saying how did you go with bird crap and getting the bugs off??

Yeah bird poop does eat paint. I know it gets pretty bad if its left on for a while especially on acrylic jobs or touch up paint. But as far as i know it's ok on the plasti dip. The woman parks underground at home/work so she hardly cops it.

She says she uses the brush at the car wash too and it's never scratched/lifted or marked the paint work. Yet.

I plan on pealing it off in a few months just to see how the factory paint is and also because she wants a colour change too

Plastidip is pretty strong stuff if applied enough of it, so I wouldn't really worry about stone chips on the wheels.

As for removing vs vinyl. I reckon the plastidip would be easier to remove vs vinyl. I think even with stone chips on paint, plastidip wouldn't rip off more paint, where as the vinyl will and will also leave a fair bit of sticky residue from the adhesive backing.

Also, on certain objects i.e. rims with many spokes, wrapping it with one piece just becomes much more difficult and sometimes impossible, where as plastidip would get into all areas.

IMO, the only downside to plastidip is the rough finish.
