I have bought a Stagea that smells pretty badly of mould but the carpets, seats etc all seem to be clean, dry and free of mould. I've tried to Glen20 the interior (its kills mould) but its not made much difference. What else should i try? Or should i just get the interior shampood by a detailer? Any recommendations for a detailer in Sydney?

Chances are it was shampooed and left with windows closed...shamppoing is ok but you really need to air it out well afterwards...thats why steam cleaning is prefferable....

you an try oet it air out and keep the heater blasting to dry it out but you need to kill the mould and it could well be in the underlay.....it could be leaves or crud stuck in your vents even that's creating a pool of stagnent water...we found a drink spilt under our back seat that had made the seat foam turn mouldy..it was milk to, smelt like dead animal. :yucky:

But yeah keep looking, you need to find the source of it..GL

You can have a loan of my moisture detector Adam.

It's actually used for detecting termites behind walls - and has three settings to 'see' through brick or gyprock or timber.

So in effect, you can pass this hand-held electronic block over carpet, boot lining and such.

If you wish, I can bring it down to Earlwood on Friday.

Hi Terry,

Thanks very much for the offer, I will take you up on it. I'm intrigued by the gadget! Let me know what time suits. You could text me on Friday afternoon to fit in best with your work schedule if you like.

Hi Artz,

Yeah i saw another post about steam cleaning - will look into that, exp since its already clean just needs a spore nuking.

Terry I'm just having a chat to a pest controller friend of mine...says those meters are no good around metal as it sets it off giving false readings.

"yup. it uses electricity to detect moisture, so anything that conducts electricity will say that it has a 100% water saturation."

have you got something different to what he has maybe? they look to be relatively inexpensive to buy..

Thanks for that feedback.

They are expensive - and they're closed-shop items to inspectors.

Since I live in the Blue Mtns, I wanted one for myself 'er; my house.

To my knowledge, there's no alternative. But what I can say is, there are virtually or close to no false readings when I pass the unit over AC wiring.

Maybe I should try it on my own car first?

I can think of a few things that could contribute to the Danky smell

Mould grown from water trapped in the AC/Heater ducts or

Under the wiper Arms there is a sheild, under that sheild is a valley. It may be blocked where the water is supposed to run off.

Mould may be growing in there and smell comming through the air vents. My old 32 had a nice fungus growing in there :(

Stags have sunroofs - damp seeping into hood lining ?

Perhpas even under the centre console (carpet).

Glad the machine didn't give off any "false positives" from proximity to metal.

So it appears the cabin is pretty dry. :)

There are probably residual fungal spores that need to be evacuated - say, with a Dyson?

  • 2 weeks later...

Maybe you can find a detailer or car yard that uses an Ozone Machine or hire one

After that if you want you could use one of the car products and run your car with AC on

Cheers

:)

Thanks for the the link - ill definitely give that a shot if the other one doesnt work.

No worries mate, you've helped me a fair bit over the years. (brakes is one I remember  )

Did a bit of research when I saw the issue you posted.

This Ozone Machine seriously seems the best method. Actually kills/removes the ION's, microbes, fungi that creates the Odours.

Cleaning masks the issue but does not rid the micro bacterial cause.

I'll definitely be using this as a Just-in-Case measure.

    • So we have most the interior back in, and for the first time with one OEM speaker hooked up. The 31 is running, driving and now tunes!!! Hahaha yet another step for the sub that sat 10m under for two weeks!!! unbelievable really 👌 lots of love work and not giving up on her. Seen so many youngsters part way less, and in way better condition. I’m stubborn, thinking another problem is just a hurdle to overcome, One at a time. IMG_9277.mov
    • That is correct. I'm using a modified ABS ring and a ZF speed sensor on my rear diff for speed input. I'm running a Haltech ecu.
    • Been busy with the newborn. We originally thought we were going to go for a third, but we're good with two lol. He's starting to actually sleep now so I've had some energy to work on the car. It's been parked away in the garage since late November due to winter.  I went ahead and redid all my head oil drains. I originally had my front and rear head drain going into the same pipe but have since split them up. I also added an Ethanol content sensor to get ready to run E85 this summer. Tossed it on my return line. Sensor sits nicely under my intake manifold.    I also have a lot of parts that came in for my rear end. I'll be swapping over to a 3.3 final drive and doing the GK teck anti squat mod. While the rear subframe is off, I'll also change every bushing. We're planning on buying another house soon with the condition that I get at a minimum a 2 door garage, so I'll wait to have more room for this. Now onto the strange things that recently happened... After changing the lower rad hose (It had been sitting in my cabinet for well over a year and was the last hose I had to replace), I let the car idle in the garage to bleed my coolant. After running for a few minutes, it started missing. Got much worst within a minute or two and then stalled and would not restart. My crank sensor decided to crap itself. No damage, no explanation, just died. I went ahead and replaced it with another ZF sensor but the heavier duty stainless model with a shield. Tossed that in and started right up. Has anyone else seen this? I hate when things fail without cause. Luckily this was a blessing in disguise... This lead me to recheck my timing. It seems I may have had a beer or two the last time I had set my TDC angle as I was off exactly 5 degrees... I miscounted a line haha. I was running 5 degrees less then commanded. It's a little embarrassing but helps explain why my dyno operator seemed to think I should be making more then 478rwkws.
    • Sharing results from recent Liberty Walk R35 GTR, since they are still considered as somesort of a V36 Skyline. We do them turbos too. This are high flowed SS-1 models with ball bearing conversion done.  Car have managed to pull 485awkws @ 20Psi so far pushing limitations of factory built engine. The build list for R35 GTR enthusiasts as follow : HyperGear high flowed stock turbos in SS1 (G25-660 specs) Custom titanium intake pipes. Vspec performance titanium front pipes. • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
