Does the evo 9 head allow a more aggressive valvetrain or something?

No not exactly, but It allows us to run MIVEC which is mitsubishis version of a variable intake cam (cam timing... Not variable lobes like hondas VTEC)

This will enable us to hold power up top, but realise 2-300rpm better spool and more power 'under the curve'. Not only that, it makes larger cams ALOT easier to live with as you can decrease the overlap on cruise, etc. This results in better cruise drivability and better fuel ecconomy.

The Evo 9 head also has better cooling abilities as the coolent galleries in the exhaust side of the head are different / bigger.

Im terms of more agressive cams, I really cant get any higher lift. This particular head/valvetrain combo has been setup to allow the largest lift possible on the 4G63 head. I cant go larger because the retainer will contact the valve stem seals.

New cams are rather wild with 12.1mm of lift on intake and 11.9mm of lift on intake. :woot:

Head, cams and rocker cover delivered yesterday.

Custom pistons will be arriving this week, the engine should go together in the next 2-3 weeks.

Still waiting on exhaust manifold to be fabricated, another 4 weeks I think.

Undecided on intake manifold... To stick with the stock item (that has been cut open and ported / reshaped) or to go a larger intake plennum. The smaller intake is good under 4,000rpm, and has a lower boost threshold due to smaller volume, but the larger intake will be good above 4,000rpm and excel at 6,000rpm+... My turbo will start to fall off around 7,500rpm due to the rear housing, which is why I cant really decide.

Extreme Tuners in Greece are bloody amazing.

I have no doubt you'd be familiar with them, but if not; this thread has some incredible stuff in it.

Bloody tonnes of pages of Americans crying about his credentials though.

Love what you're doing & looking forward to seeing more; best of luck!

Hey Guys and Gals!

Sorry I have been so quiet lately!! Unfortunatly alot and nothing has happened with the build.

I was looking to ditching the FP Black in favour of a HTA3586, or GTX3582 or a custom forward facing EFR8374. But circumstances have changed and It looks like Ill be keeping my FP black for a while longer. I just dont have the time nor money to be sorting out a new turbo kit at this stage, as I would much prefer to spend the money on driveline. The FP Black should be good for 400kw+ at all fours, so I think it will be sufficent for now!

The engine build has been progressing slowly, with all the parts now with the engine builder, We have decided to ditch the old L19 headstuds, ARP main bolts, and replace all bolts with ARP Custom Aged 625+ Bolts as the engine will be taking alot of boost (34-36psi). By the looks of things, It will be comming together shortly (next 3-4 weeks) which means I should have alot more photos to show.

In regards to the car itself, My AME TM02 Tracers in 18*10.5" have arrived, and we are just deciding on the colours of the car. Before any prep work can happen, we have a 6 week wait for the custom fender flares to be made and shipped, from there it will take approx 1-3 weeks to modfiy and prep the body for paint. So at a guess, 9-12 weeks and It should be out of the body shop ready for the engine to be dropped in. In that time, I need to source some new head + tail lights, and organise a retrimmer to make me some custom carpets, trim my dash top, and re-trim my steering wheel.

It has been a LONG road so far, but it will be worth it in the end.

Cant wait to get some more photos to show you all!!

L19's have the same tensile strength as the 625+ as far as I know. Where did you get them? I scoured every shop a few months ago for my 4g63 stroker kit, couldn't find the 625+ studs anywhere.

Nice work buddy! It'll be worth the wait.... We can go get banned from Maccas again :woot:

Keen to see it all come together as its been far too farking long since we have been out causing trouble :D

The L19's were in there for a while, and we thought, that while we were replacing everything else, It would be safer to use some fresh fasteners.

The Custom Aged 625+ fasterners are more corrosion resistant and have SLIGHTLY higher tensile strength over the L19's.

Thanks mate. Yeah, it will be worth the wait. It will be an awesome streeter, and I will be keen to hit the drags, circuit, and generally thrash again....

I cant wait to show you the progress bro! Its taken WAAAAAY to long, and it has been ages since we have been out causing trouble. It will happen again. The day I pick it up, I think I'm going to run it in on old pac or putty rd. LOL.

Okay, so nothing interesting has happened since my last update.

We are still waiting on parts from Voltex.
I need to find some Evo 9 front and rear lights to suit the exterior of the car.
So the body of the car... nothing is happening.

Engine wise we haven't touched it. No rush because the body is still 4-6 weeks off.

Only real updates I do have is that my exhaust manifold has finally finished. It was sent two days ago, and should land in a week or so (sent from the US of A). And I purchased a new gauge cluster for my car...

300kp/h and 10,000rpm on it. Booya! It will be needed. ;)

Thanks!
Things are slowly starting to happen with the car..

Engine will get its first mock build in a week or so.

New front bar is getting moulded along with front flares and rear bar. Still waiting on some rear flares which has been the biggest holdup so far...

Hoping to get it running by Xmas... 19-20th of December.

Hey All,
So a few things have been happening of late with the car so I thought I would take the chance to update you all.

CHASSIS
A few things have started to happen with the chassis/body. The front end of the car has been started, with front bar and modified fenders. I have also decided to stick with white as a colour, rather then change it. It was all taking too long, and I actually don't mind white. We aren't just going to an ordinary 'solid' white like the old / standard paint was... ;)

I am going to pick up my tyres next Wednesday (13th of November). I'm getting myself some Hankook R-S3 in 285/35 R18 as my street rubber. This thing will GRIP like nothing before. With the slightly higher the standard sidewalls, should give be a better street ride as well.

DRIVETRAIN
Originally I was going to throw my stock 6sp back in as I just couldn't source a proper gearbox solution without spending $10k upwards. I have run into some good fortune recently, and stumbled across a genuine Evo 8RS transmission for reasonable money. These came from factory with really close ratio's, and in factory form they top-out in 5th gear @ 230kph / 7,000rpm (stock redline). The 'RS' series of transmissions had the option for a low gear final drive option of 4.8 which is really meant for dirt / rally as it lowered the top speed to 210kph / 7,000rpm (stock redline).

In addition to this, they generally ran upgraded syncros (triple in first / second I believe). So combined with my Cusco 1 way front LSD, there shouldn't be any reason to doubt the reliability of the driveline (well the front end anyway - rear diff is still questionable)

This option is perfect for me as it offers good street manners over a dog / sequential, greater strength of the 5sp over my current 6sp, and the ratios are almost spot on. As soon as we get the box, I'm going to get a full overhaul done on it, and purchase a HKS racing 4.11 final drive. This will change things dramatically, and almost suit the power band perfectly as the RPM drop will be spot on. If I was to shift at 7,000rpm for example, the revs will drop in the 5,000 to 5,500 region. Every gear. As the predicted max torque is around 4,500 - 5,000rpm this will be absolutely perfect as it will allow me to use the full power band without slipping out of it. Combine this with a predicted RPM cutoff of 8,500rpm then I will have MILES of power band and wont be shifting around every 5secs. Staying in gear longer will save me time on the racetrack and on the strip.

I have done a graph to represent the RPM vs Speed in each gear. The blow graph uses the following constrants - Expected 8,500rpm redline / cutoff, Evo 8RS ratios, HKS Racing 4.11 Final Drive, 285/35/18 tyres.

Evo8RSwith411Final-StreetMode-1.jpg

POWERTRAIN
As per my previous posts, not a whole lot has changed. All measurements will be taken of the rotating assembly this week / next week. This should give the accurate CC of each piston, and combustion chamber. I am aiming for a CR of at least 10.0:1 as it will give the car some much needed torque downlow, especially with the longer gears. In general, it should provide good driving manners, awesome response, and a little bit of extra power over a 'normal' 8.5 / 9.0 to 1 CR build. Combined with the addition of MIVEC and high lift cams (12mm lift!!!) it should provide a meaty midrange that will work very well with the revised gearing.

Next week I will also be picking up a Tomei Exhaust Camgear, Bosch 2000cc injectors and a Kiggly HLA regulator - which is supposed to regulate oil within the head and bleed off excess pressure (beyond 15psi) back to the sump.

My old setup utilised a HKS EVC 5 for boost control, but as the boost I will be running is going to be MUCH higher (26psi is gate pressure), I have considered looking at other options, and possibly some sort of ECU controlled boost.

So, Yesterday I picked up my EVO 8RS gearbox, ordered a HKS 4.11 final drive + JUN Sump.

I also dropped into Bodyform for a looksy..

Yup, with these bad-boys I should be able to run an extra 25-30mm of wheel width. Previously I had 9.5" +35 front wheels with 15mm spacers, which were flush with the stock guards. Now I should be able to run something ALOT more aggressive. :)

    • I mean it's probably likely that people overestimate their skills in dialling in a setup and noticing the changes. I had SK shocks and springs, and added heavier springs and got them revalved by Sydney Shocks to suit based upon what I told them I wanted the car to handle like. I got back a completely different feeling set of shocks, which probably (?) feel great on track but holy hell are they rough on tram tracks and the like. Truth be told I doubt I'd be any faster or slower with either setup, or camber/castor combination. I also had whiteline eccentric castor bushes up front of my R34. I removed them and put in poly non-adjustable ones to soothe my OCD (nobody ever set the castor the same side to side, and it'd be near impossible to do) and be happy the wheel is centered in the well now for clearance reasons. Yes I wanted it to move 1mm 'back' :p I've effectively set my castor back to stock, negating all the benefits of that which is supposedly massive. I can't tell any difference steering the car.
    • You reckon? I have to disagree. Notwithstanding that at some point we may all be forced to do this to our cars if we want to keep driving them, there is absolutely nothing about an electric-converted-previously-IC-car that is ever good. EVs that are built by OEMs on platforms that were originally IC already suck, let alone the shitty outcomes that result from doing it as a retro to something that was actually built as an IC car. This is because the platform really needs to be designed to house the battery in a useful place (ie, down as low as possible) and the motors are properly located relative to the wheels that they have to drive. Converted platforms already suck at this. But when you try to shove sufficient battery capacity into a previously IC car, you can't put it down on/in the floor, because that space doesn't exist. You can't find enough space where the fuel tank used to be (if it is an inboard fuel tank) and you don't want to hang it out behind the rear axle line if you had a rear fuel tank. And there's not enough space in the tunnel if you still want to use it for anything remotely like what it was originally used for. The engine bay is too big for a motor, and you'd really prefer that the motor for the rear wheels wasn't in the front engine bay anyway. And there's not enough room where the diff was for a proper man-sized E motor. And then.... there is the complete lack of soul and emotion that is provided by EVs. There are some cracking restomods out there. Like the Alfaholics GTA thingo. But it is petrol powered. Look at the alternative EV version of a GTA restomod by Totem. it is jaw droppingly beautiful. But by all reports is is objectively awful to drive, despite having 600 HP or something, simply because there is nothing there. It sounds like a sewing machine or a leaf blower. It should scream and wail and make the hairs on your neck stand up. Oh, and it's 1500 bloody kg in a car that was <900kg when new. GTRs are heavy enough as it is without pushing them up to 2tonnes worth of pork.
    • https://www.dezeen.com/2025/01/06/nissan-electric-r32-skyline-gt-r-godzilla-sports-car/   I reckon this is pretty cool. Lots of other Resto mods have turned to ev power.
    • hahaha @joshuaho96 the most action it gets is when I have to drive from West to SE VIC to meet the fam. Even then, it;s on highway cruising speeds
    • don't know anyone in this thread, but i just found it, read the entire thing in a few hours, realized greg is still posting progress, and just have to say, this is awesome. it looks awesome. 100% right about the Uras kit making it a pain to get on hoists...have the same kit on my 34 and it takes six 2x4s and race ramps to do it without taking parts off. this reminds me exactly of this thread. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/r63-amg-the-unicorn-of-my-destruction/110824/page8/
