Hi Everyone,

After much nagging from Mat, I decided to start my own build thread for my Evo - I hope you guys/gals can appricate a build that isn't a Nissan!

Behind the scenes story.. I have owned this car for about 5-6 years now, and it is now going through its third build (second engine build).

FIRST BUILD

The first build of the car, was a street setup that could play at the track, and drag strip as well.

Back then the car had stock block, Kelford 272* 11mm lift cams, a bolt on 20G turbocharger, and all the bolt-ons. Stock body, coilovers and some R34 GTR wheels. It pulled about 230-240kW at all fours, and on my first outing at the drags it pulled a 13.2sec quarter with a 2.0sec 60' time. At wakefield it layed down a 1.08sec lap.

SECOND BUILD

For the second stage of the build, I decded to go for a much more wild track style build, but still play on street or drag strip.

The car was rebuilt using a 2.3L stroker kit, port and polished head, modified manifolds, custom 272* 10.8mm lift JUN cams (lumpy as FK), 1450cc inj, big twin 255l/hr walbro fuelsystem, custom forced performance turbocharger setup, floor pan stitchwelded, voltex carbon wing, stripped interior, halfcage, evo 9 passenger seat, cobra fixed back bucket seat. The car belted out a very lazy 300-320kW (at 24psi) at all fours. It ran a 12.4sec 1/4 mile (second time ever) with a 1.8sec 60' time and belted out a 1.48sec at easter creek on street rubber. Ever since the build the car was plauged with problems, and I never got to enjoy it.

CURRENT / THIRD BUILD

So here we are.. after taking my car to another shop to get the tune looked at, it was looked into further, and many parts of the engine build was found to be fautly/defective. So the decision was made to start from scratch. A blank canvas if you will. I admit, with the second build I moved away from the car I originally setout to build, which was a street brawler, that can hold its own at the track + strip, but can be used day to day. What I had turned the car into was a full-track car. So for this build, I have decided to tame things down, and just get the car running how I always wanted it. I am going for an understated / stealth look, and will eventually get the car engineered.

I have spent alot of time researching, and doing calcs on what would create the powerband I wanted, be reliable, and not to mention fun.

ENGINE

Alot of things will be changing in the engine department. The only real things from the original engine build that are staying, is the engine block, intake manifold + throttle, intercooler and turbo. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING else is getting changed.

My original ported evo 8 head was soldoff a few months ago, I originally purchased a second hand O-ringed evo 9 head. But eventually we decided that we should be starting from be begining. No second hand parts that I do not know thier history. The head was crack-tested and pressure-tested, after it passed with flying colours, it was put up for sale and I took the big step of ordering a brand new CNC ported Evo 9 MIVEC head from the USA. This head should not only see gains in flow, but the fact it has a variable intake cam, means that I can get more drivability out of the car, and potential for more lowdown power/better powerband as well as better idle + fuel ecconomy.

To go with the new head, a set of upgraded lifters, beehive springs + Ti retainers (rated to 10,500RPM!!!), 1mm oversize valves, new camshafts (274* cams & 12.1mm of lift), and basically every other bit to do a complete MIVEC head conversion on a Evo 8 block.

When we pulled the block apart, after assessing the bottomend it was decided that new pistons would be needed. I personally didnt like the crank we used in the second build (100mm stroke cast 4G64 crank), so we deicded to replace the whole rotating assembly with; Billet 94mm Stroke Crank, Forged I beam rods and custom pistons. (to change the static compression ratio!)

Since ordering the gear, the Crank + rods have arrived, with the pistons due in a few weeks and the head should arrive approx end of june, ready for the whole shooting match to be put together.

On the intake side of things, pritty much everything is staying, HKS Type-R Intercooler Kit, Ported and flowbenched stock intake manifold, inlarged stock throttlebody.

Exhaust side of things has changed alot. Previously I was running a restrictive 70mm dumppipe, 70mm front pipe, 3" 200cell metal cat and a Trust Ti- R Exhaust, which was 80mm, but necked down at the flange to suit stock cat (approx 68mm). This all was unacceptable, as it was just too loud and quite restrictive for my turbo (which is highly sensitive to backpressure), so I am replacing it with a 3" dump (with septerated wastegate dump) into a 3.5" front pipe, a 100cell cat with a 3.5" inlet and 3" outlet into a true 3" catback fitted with two hotdogs and a oval rear muffler for noise suppression. Exhaust manifold was a Full-Race manifold with 1.25" primaries, this is being replaced with a TOXIC-FAB manifold with 1.5" primarys.

My turbo is a custom turbo from Forced Performance. It has a HTA82 Compressor Wheel and a 67mm Turbine wheel (1mm smaller then a GT35 turbine). The Turbine housing is a 10.5cm2 twin scroll housing with internal gate. I have decided to keep it from my last build, as it was never pushed hard (only ran 24psi), and it will lower costs. The turbine has already been set away to freshen up its ceramic coating, and the compressor housing has been coated in black for a steath look.

I have since sold the FIC 1450cc injectors and will be replacing them with a set of 2000cc injectors, and the twin walbro 255's are going to be replaced with twin walbro e85 suitable 400lphs! The return line is going to be replaced with a -6 return.

EXTERIOR

Well, this is a big sticking point for me. I hate the way the car looks these days. It looks soooo rundown, and a cop magnet. So the front tow-hook is going, along with my voltex wing. I have purchased a second hand standard wing, a second hand front bar and I will be purchasing an Evo 9 rear bar. The car will be cleaned up and resprayed to look factory. Currently the car is white, but the intent is to respray it a gunmetal colour. At the moment Im leaning towards the House of Colour Hue: Galaxy Grey.

Currently the car sits on rims I purchased for the second build. They were Enkei PF01 in 18*9.5" +35, sprayed in lexus gunmetal and shod in Advan AD08 265/35R18 rubber. But I have recently put a deposit down on a set of AME TM02 Tracers in Gunmetal. I am still deciding if I should run a 18x9.5" +22 with 275/35R18 tyres and pulled rear guards, or a set of 18x10.5" +22 with 295/30R18 tyres with some bolt on flares...... Not sure.

INTERIOR

Well, what can I say. Its pure race at the moment. So my cobra race seat and evo 9 passenger seat are up for sale. I will be replacing them with a set of stock Evo8MR recaro seats in black suade. The half cage will be staying but I will be putting carpet back in, and putting some type of stereo back in....

So thats my story for now... I will add to it later + add pictures. Thanks for reading.

Lol nice work man! Looks so different back then! And you got rid of the damn GTR wheels ya nugget! Should of put them on my car ;)

Keep the updates coming! Including the new weapon build

^ Problem is that evo guards are just not as accomodating as GTR guards...

Its a lot of work to fit the 9.5's +22!

Ill get Lenny to come around with the angle grinder? :P When are you going to put your Enkeis on my car?

Can you get me a 235/45/17 tyre? Needs to be roadworthy...

Need a SUPER cheap one..

Going to put the car on stockies so I can trial fit the Enkei's on your car.

Less chat MORE build!

ha yea fair enough i understand.

if your going to do work to fit the 9.5s, may aswell do a little more for the 10.5s :)

Hey guys, Just a quick update.

Car is heading over to Bodyform next week (tuesday I think) to get the paint looked at, as it is currently looking VERY neglected due to all the trackwork, and spending alot of time outside (never had a garage for it!)....

So we are tossing up a few different colours at the moment.

-Lamborghini 'Bianco Monocerus' White with Ceramic White (or simlar) AME TM02 Tracers.
-Ferrari 'Bianco Avus' White with Ceramic White (or simlar) AME TM02 Tracers.
-Lexus 'White Nova' White with Ceramic White (or simlar) AME TM02 Tracers.
-Lamborghini 'Grigio Lynx' Gunmetal with Dark Gunmetal AME TM02 Tracers.

The look we are trying to go with, is a very clean, understated look that sets itself apart from every other evo you see on the road, which is why we are looking at colours from supercar manufacturers, simply because the colours they produce always standout and look different...

Ill post some pictures soon of 'Before' it goes...

Build is smick man. I love it!

Looking forward to keeping up with it.

How much did the OEM Head cost you?

Thanks for the nice words. I look forward to keeping everyone updated with more pictures!

The blank core was approx $1,600..

Hurry up already Alex :P

I am bro. 6-8 weeks and it should be back on the road with a run-in tune.
