Hey guys I need some help here, and I have searched but all I could find is the usual missfire on boost at 4500rpm which isn't my case.

I have a r34 GTT and suddenly today out of no where when I turn it on and its cold its constantly misfiring as if its only running on 5 cylinders.

Once warm or normal temp I should say its ok only flutters abit here and there but at any time not only on boost.

I was thinking coil packs but wouldn't it be worse when it warms up if it were coil packs rather than spark plugs, e.g. when my trail bike wouldn't start pull the plug out heat it up with a lighter and shes sweet.

I will list my mods below, and thank you for any help in advance, thanks.

POWER FC.

220RWKW.

STOCK TURBO 11PSI.

FRONT MOUNT.

YELLOW JACKETS INSTALLED ABOUT 5000KMS AGO JUST BEFORE THE TUNE.

3" CATBACK EXHAUST WITH HIGH FLOW CAT.

I WAS RUNNING SOME 5 TEMP IRIDIUM PLUGS WITH A 1.1MM GAP AT TUNE BUT IN SUMMER STARTED TO GET SOME KNOCK AND THE TUNER TOLD ME TO PUT PFR8B9 (0.9MM GAP) IN AND THAT WAS DONE ABOUT 1-2000KMS AGO.

POD FILTER.

V-POWER FUEL.

You can't test them.

Here are your options;

Replace spark plugs at gap them to .7 or .6 whatever.

Ask someone to borrow their coilpacks to see if your coilpacks are playing up. Do not buy Splitfire or Super Spark, they're cactus just buy new Nissan OEM spark plugs they're just as good.

Check your ignitor pack thing (This was my misfiring problem). I did EVERYTHING only to find out it was the ignitor pack.

Replace fuel filter, if it's old and clogged up then that will be the problem.

Anything else could be cylinder issues, but you'll probably see it on your spark plugs.

Try turning down the boost as well and that may tell you/give you abit more info as to what could be the problem.

If you don't have a boost gauge, then put one on to see if you're spiking.

Hey thanks for the quick reply, whats the ignitor pack? you got a pic? and how can I test it? I've got a boost gauge and I'm not spiking thankfully, I have my standard coil packs so ill throw them back in and see, I was thinking of throwing my old 5 temp plugs in just to check it and see if I've got a dud spark plug, I really want a front facing plenum :'( what a biatch just to get to the spark plugs or coil packs haha lol, would I be able to tell if i dont put the cooler piping back on and just check it on idle to see if its missing or would that be yet another problem? I've heard that it could be the CAS? is this true? well I'll try the plugs first tomorrow then the coil packs and see, thanks.

Do not buy Splitfire or Super Spark, they're cactus

Got proof?

I dare say alot of SAU members run or have run Splitfire's without any issues. Good bang for buck coil mod

I'd take a stab and say the cheap yellow jacket coils probably has a faulty one - seems to be common

had the exact say problem on my r34.

when the car was cold, it would misfire and run on 5 cylinders (Sounded like a rexy and drove like shit). it would get better once it warmed up.

bought a set of splitfire coilpacks and problem fixed.

hope that helps

Do not buy Splitfire

Oh dear.

Splitfires and OEM are the best bet for coils the others have a chequered history.

Feel free to come to Berwick (Victoria) and put in the splitfire Coilpacks i purchased from CJ Motor. I'll show you my ebay history for when i purchased them and how much.

Huh? The point of that is what exactly?

Yeah. You're part of the <1% failure rate.. Bad luck, suck it up. The rest of us are having no trouble with them.

1 or 2 bad experiences does not a bad product worthy of your 1st post make.

Well, yes it does. Splitfire has a aura of "YE BRO THEYRE THE BEST! BELIEVE IT!" when in reality, they failed hard for me. Splitfires may be good for your honda running 160fwkw but for me it could barely handle 260rwkw before breaking down.

Well all that aside because its off topic haha lol, if use were wondering it looks like I've found and solved the problem, somehow and I dont know why because I havent degreased my engine in agessssss there was water in the gully of spark plug 5, cleaned that up hit it with compressed air abit of wd40 and cleaned and stretched the spring a little from the coil pack because it got a little corroded and squashed for some reason and its all good now, thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it, thanks.

^^lol

Good story. Plenty of users here have made substantially more power reliably with them.

There is no doubt that all brands have some rate of failure. When this happens you return the faulty ones and ask for a replacement. Is there any reason you didn't return them for replacement?

The overwhelming experience here at SAU is that Splitfires are an OEM equivalent.

Splitfires were cheaper than OEM so most of us used them....even when we had to pay $1000 per set....or $2k for a PowerFC.....and don't ask about injector choices.

Yeah called CJMOTOR and they told me it was my engine and if they replace it, same thing will happen. I tried reasoning with them, but no go. Purchased Nissan OEM ones for $380. Worked 100%. Even tried the splitfire's in my friend's 32 and same thing happened.

It sucks if CJ Motor gave you the brush off on a faulty set.

Have checked each coil individually? It is possible there is a single faulty coil and you might be able to salvage the situation somewhat...

$380 for OEM coils is so much cheaper than the last set of Splitfires I bought. They cost me $850 when the AUD was much much lower.

CJ are Australian based so why not insist thru more official channels?

    • Hi All, New member here, I've joined to help my son with an issue that is truly doing our heads in. I'll start with a bit of an overview. Chris carried out some modifications to the engine to try and extract just a little extra power out of the motor and make it a bit more efficient. Previous to this work, the car already had an upgraded exhaust, increased boost up to 14psi, modified standard turbo to metal impellers and slightly oversized, upgraded fuel pump, been dyno-tuned at JEM, and some other bits n bobs like coil packs etc. Before the current mods it was making 236rwkw at 14psi but after the new mods it now makes 209rwkw at 14psi. The work he carried out is as follows, timing belt service, water pump replacement, return to sump radium catch can, had oem head rebuilt and machined 0.2mm, fitted Athena cut ring head gasket 1.2mm thick, arp 2000 head studs, added rear prp head drain, added an external wastegate 40mm turbosmart welded off the stock manifold and plumbed back into a 3in dump. The car has been on the dyno and apparently the ignition is working, fuel flow and fuel pressure is fine, injectors are fine, spark plugs are working fine, Maf is working, O2 sensor is working, TPs sensor is working, VCT is working, CAS is working, boost leak test showed no boost leaks, compression test first crank cold 135psi and got to 150psi across all cylinders once cranking, timing is confirmed at tdc with a dial gauge and the cam dots line up, no blockages in intercoolerm throttle body or pre-turbo intake, no blockages in exhaust, cat conveter or down pipe, turbo looks fine and spins and wastegate looks fine and is new. Soz for all the detail but after all this, it has been in 3 times for dyno and each time comes back stating it's not going to make power. After the first (or second, can't remember now) trip to dyno we did find the timing out by one tooth and this improved things, but it is still well down. Does anyone have any ideas?  Any replies much appreciated as we're just not sure of which direction to take this. Regards Rob (Chris's Dad).
    • That's just a gauge, with a certain amount of electronic damping, and no-one cares if it is timely-accurate. I'd hesitate to use it for an ECU MAP input without knowing that it was a nice signal. Responsive but smooth. Not laggy. Not lumpy.
    • Took the dirty BMW to an actual drag meet so I could do a legit full pass on a sticky enough track and had a quiet goal to try and beat my PB in the old R33 GTS25t The time to beat:  R33 on stock RB25, Internal gate GT3076R on stock manifold tuned to about 17psi on BP98 and running on drag tyres: F20 M135i with intake, dump pipe and MHD OTS Stage 1 tune on street tyres - didn't even drop the tyre pressure: Kinda similar, and kinda way different
    • Isn't there a fitting on the back of the balance tube? That's what the OEM boost gauge uses.
    • Getting a decent signal from all 6 throats is a challenge. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the stock balance tube is not ideal for it. I have done it on an ALFA 4 cylinder (about 35 years ago, so don't ask for too many details). We drilled 4x holes in the manifold runners, put in some fittings and ran hoses to a decent sized (I think it was about 20mm diameter) pipe that ran the length of the inlet manifold. So, it was quite a decent volume. There is a "tuning" balance to be found between the volume of the common plenum on such a thing and the diameter of the pipes running from it to the runners. You need the volume to be large enough to damp out the sharp spikes in pressure signal you get as each runner gets sucked on by its cylinder, but not so large that it becomes too slow to respond to actual changes in MAP. And you need the hoses to be small enough to transmit the signal quickly, but not so small that they delay the signal. You might have to have more than one go at it, if there isn't any actual success based wisdom to be had here. Hopefully there is. Anyway, I would not do it on only a couple of cylinders. I would also not care about "permanently modifying a part". Just bloody drill holes and make stuff better. There is nothing sacred about any GTR unless it is a genuine museum piece that you shouldn't be modifying at all anyway.
