Hey guys I just took photos of a number of issues regarding paint/rust in my r33.

I'm wondering to what extent can I restore the paint, less the guards. Hopefully this could help some others in the future with their paint problems! I've tried searching the site but I've only found the bad ones that really need a respray or bubbles in paint from rust that need to be sanded back and painted over.

This is going to be a long post but here goes!

1) I'll start off with some chips on the bonnet and the driver's door

I thought of getting the PowerPlus's primer/paint(Polar White, I believe this is QM1 for nissan skylines, am I right?) and clear coat from SuperCheapAuto

So...

Is the polar white from supercheapauto the correct paint?

Which primer should I use?

Do I need to sand back everything? Or can I just clean the area and apply primer -> paint -> clear coat -> Cut and polish the area to even it out? Or do I need to buff it instead?

2) Next are what I think is happening is that the top paint is peeled off(I think!) and can I again, just clean -> paint -> clearcoat -> cut and polish?

I'm unsure what this last one is, it appears that it's been painted over a long time ago?

3) Here's some rust I found on the hinges of the driver's side door, I was thinking of applying Septone's rust convertor from SCA then touch up paint and a clear coat as a finish. I don't think I can buff the area so I think careful application with a paint brush should suffice (I think!)

4) Rust in the usual spare tyre area, found out that it was my lights which I will be removing and resealing them in the near future. It looks like something's been welded over in place though. I plan to cover the entire area with rust convertor again and just paint it over, I'm not sure if I'm missing anything.

The second image shows some small cracks due to rust over time. No idea how long it's been going on for

5) Here's the nasty one lol, the rear guards are pretty f!@#& Can I just sand the area, then prime -> paint -> clear coat and follow with a cut and polish(buff?)

I probably need to get them flared or rolled? Here're two pictures of how both tyres sit on each side. (On a side note, one side seems to protrude out more than the other  )

6) Front bumper, I'm not sure if this can be salvaged or do I need to respray it entirely?

7) Lastly, this probably doesn't belong in this section of the forum but I thought I'd just keep it in one post(don't have to answer this! I'll post in the other section if required) can I adjust to make the boot lid sit flush? Or do I need to get a new one?

Thanks for staying till the end , this is my first skyline so any and every comment is welcome!

Just some additional information, I just bought an RO Polisher and I'm worried that if I go over the areas where the paint's peeled/chipped/cracked, I might cause further damage to the paint. Do I need to patch them up before polishing? I might just avoid tape up the problem areas and just polish the rest of the car. Thoughts?

Edit: Some images weren't loading, had to retype the code

I suggest you invest in a couple of wire wheels and a drill/ plus a grinder, you will need to remove the rust with that then use rust converter and fish oil afterwards otherwise it will just form again.
QM1 polar white and get the year, make and model, there are many different versions of polar white.

Clean, prime, paint is the order you need. The better the prep/cleaning work the better results yielded. Multiple thin layers of paint is best.

Rear Guards are knackered they will need replacing just going from the pics.
Fronts will need to be removed off the chassis (easy to do) then you will need to wire wheel it off, then use rust converter, then fish oil, follow by sanding to get smooth start at a low grit sand paper to a high one. Then prep for painting, then paint and clear over the top.
The boot/spare wheel area, you will need to remove the sound deadening first(the black/grey shit) see how bad the rust is, if its all the way through the metal then it will be have to be cut out and replaced. if not do the same as above.

I would replace the door hinges with brand new ones.

Bumpers can be repainted depending on the material. Just need to strip old paint off for a nice even finish. Same with the hood.

Picture 8 is a bit worrying, dont even know what to say. Looks like the door is just filled with rust.

Any bubbles of paint is usually rust forming underneath the paint. Paint will need to be stripped and rust removed and repainted.
Remove the side skirts too it looks like it has some from the pics, then check for rust there.

To be honest, the car is a wreck, do yourself a favor before you attempt any work.
Get the car jacked up and check you chassis rails, if they are free of rust or not bent. Then go for it.
If they are rusty/bent/look abnormal, you may aswell just wreck/part out the car.
That car looks like it has been mistreated in the past, wouldnt surprise me if it was a repairable writeoff.

I've had the car fully jacked up and underbody checked by chasers before and didn't have any issues as far as the chassis is concerned fortunately for me :O and it doesn't have any history of a writeoff, did a ppsr check as well to confirm.

I will try and remove the sound deadener to see how bad it is underneath and get the hinges replaced as well as get myself a wire wheel

The majority of skylines on the road are in a similar or worse condition.

If the paint is in that condition then its highly likely that the engine/drivetrain/suspension/brakes also need a ton of work.

Would be ridiculously expensive to get it mint and if a mint car is what you want then its better to start with one.

Compression tests are even across all cylinders 158-161, no issues with suspension/brakes either, transmission isn't notchy so at least that's all safe for now!

Edit: Front guards are all good! it's just the rears that are kind of meh

If you want to do a good job, take the fronts off and re paint them where they have been rolled/lipped.
That is easy to do and only requires a quick wire wheel job to remove the rust, then just prep, prime and paint.
They are easier to do off the car than on.
As you can see all the guards have been rolled poorly, not enough heat has gone into them to stop the paint from cracking. Then moisture has got in and rusted them.
