Speeding Fine Insurance

Attention all lead-foot drivers Australia-wide! A budding young businessman in Melbourne claims he can save you money on speeding fines.

Ryan Law has a new business venture he says will save the lead-footed drivers of Australia a fortune. Join his club for just $69 and Ryan will go halves in any speeding or parking ticket you receive in the space of a year.

"It's as simple as one, two, three ... get a speeding ticket and save hundreds of dollars, it's as easy as that," Ryan said.

"Open to everyone including interstate, because the process is very simple. Just one phone call, just send me the fine and if the rego matches up to our database, then we send you a cheque for 50 percent of that amount."

Apart from being Ryan's personal protest against what he calls nit-picking fines, the 22-year-old is out to make a buck with Finesecure – a kind of dumb driving insurance.

But when you consider the millions of dollars collected by speed cameras alone each year, this potentially makes him the most generous insurer in Australia.

"I think the current fine rate is not acceptable. It's a little bit too high for the average Australian," Ryan said.

"That is the main reason for the scheme and I'm hoping the fines will drop in price and there's no reason for this scheme any more."

Pie in the sky, maybe, but motorists are queuing up for a piece of the action.

Not everyone's so taken with Ryan's plan ... ambulance paramedic Peter Swan picks up the pieces after speed-related car accidents. He says there are harsh penalties on speeding for a reason.

"We know speed kills. Why would someone come up with a scheme that may cause increased deaths and more misery on our roads?" Peter said.

"There could be an increase in road trauma, there is the potential it will lead to deaths, unnecessary deaths."

Ryan disagrees with the suggestion it will increase speeding.

"I wouldn't think so. They have police on the road for a reason - to stop speeding motorists," Ryan said.

Ryan's insurance is effectively insured itself by the demerit points system ... he can pay half your fine, but you still lose the points.

"Look at it this way, people have a certain amount of demerit points and the points are there for a reason," Ryan said. "If you speed too much, you should get fined and you lose your points."

Queensland businessman Paul Truebody caused outrage last year when he tried a similar thing. Even though his scheme was five-times more expensive than Ryan's, his business didn't last long.

It seems Ryan's facing an uphill battle. Even people like Ken Ogden from Victoria's RACV - who's been critical of the way governments' use speed cameras - isn't backing the new scheme.

"I think the very fact that somebody is able to market a product like this indicates that speed enforcement in this state has reached a pretty sorry state," Ken said.

"The best insurance policy is to not actually speed in the first place so you don't accumulate the infringement."

Sound advice, but Ryan's no fool. He's pressing ahead with Finesecure, which is available to all drivers, regardless of age or driving record.

Only time will tell whether he, too, will fall by the wayside or become a white-knight to white-knuckled drivers across the country.

"It's true that some people will naturally flaunt this, but if the general public embraces this idea and the scheme works everyone pays less for fines," Ryan said.
