Before you go and bag drift, i want to ask if you have ever drifted a car at a track? If not then sit down loud mouth, because its a lot harder than it looks and dont be quick to bag something that you havent done or even cannot do/are not interested in doing. If trolling forums and talking crap to people about something that you have never even experienced, your in the same boat as the wannabe drifters as you have no real comprehension of what drift is and what it means to the drivers giving it a go.

While the aussis have a half assed attempt at drift, at least its now getting sanctioned at calder park by full lock crew. Ive been to the first drift day in a car that isnt 'built for drift' but i still had a good time and also hanged it more sideways than half of the cars out there (s13). The car is a White Soarer 5spd manual, exhaust, FMIC and boost to 12psi and LSD. Rest is stock, even the suspension isnt 'drift spec' (koni dampers with king springs - no adjustment). You have to start somewhere. Japan has been drifting ever since the early 80s at least, so that puts them ahead 25 years. They have 180sx's like we do geminis and they are that cheap. They have the money, motorsport venues and more importantly the fan base to persue drift and push it to its limits. The USA has arrogance but more importantly MONEY to make anything turn its way. That Pontiac GTO is a fantastic machine and can rival some D1 competitors (Two top 16 finishes at the D1 comp).

For the record, i havent drifted in the streets. I have had some tail happy power oversteer when exiting corners at times and some slappers, but i do not call this drift. I dont drift in streets because its very dangerous and your more likely to trash your car by hitting a gutter or killing yourself on a pole. $100 bucks for a track day, 4 hrs of drifting, what more could you want? Safe environment, no police, no gutters or poles to hit and a great time giving your car hell.

I too hate the whole fad, with DRFT stickers, autotechnia exhausts and wannbes talking about drifting like they are gods, but havent even pulled the handbrake in their car before. These people make me sick, but at least they stay out of my way because they have so much experience and are experts at _everything_, they dont bother comming to track days to give it a go. ;)

In short, drifting is a lot harder than it appears, and 'drift cars' only assist in the stability of the car when drifting, but dont exactly drift the car for you. If you were a really bad driver and you jumped into a ferarri to dominate racing, your lap times will be faster than your usual times, but by other champion ferarri drivers standards, your still just as crap as you where, only the wheels have gotten better. Drift is a lot more driver dependant and it requires a lot of balls, skill and precision. Money is also an element, but ive seen an R31 skyline, non-turbo with a welded diff, standard soggy suspension, out drift many cars worth 5 times its value.

I go to the track day and enjoy the drifting because i have a good time and i collaborate with people that do the same. I dont think ill make it as a D1 driver but at least im going to have a lot of fun copying, learning drift style and racing. I have come to the conclusion that 90% of the 'FULLY SIK DRIFTERS" cannot drift and havnet drifted in their lifes, but they are good money making machines for the companies and hence why the media/companies are making money off it. At the end of the day, some other 'breakthrough' motorsport will be taking over and all the wannabes will be quick to migrate to that.

I think people were a little confused.. I don't think Shan was bagging drift at all.

What he *was* bagging i think was young guys trying to emulate the pro drifters and take it to the streets, and as a result stuff themselves or their cars up.. or even worse others. That is because proper drifting isn't easy!

Maybe RB stands for "rubber boat" ?? But obviously the japanese do attach english names to many things otherwise it wouldn't come out of the factory with a little "skyline" on the bootlid. Whether its "Race bred" or "Rabid Bitch" is open for discussion.. ;)

Skyline and Fairlady were names used by Prince (no not the singer) in the 1940's prior to merging with Nissan. Prince as you may know was trying real hard to emulate the car makers of Europe, with particular inspiration coming from the Jag company in England.

After WW2, they sorta figured out they could do it better than jag, so they didn't try to emulate them any more and so din come up with pooncy names ;) Hence Silvia.

amature drifting practice at skidpan/track = good fun.

Media that makes kids think drifting is easy = bad.

man i just saw this thread and a good one it is, i can only put in my 2 cents and say guys, you think you can drift start off at a skid pan, when i first bought my 180 i thought ohh yea i could drift, so i decide to do somthing in the wet one nite and hit a Caution RD work sign.

after that i woke up and realised i knew shit all about my car and how it handles.

So i started going to the Skid pan about 5 times so far,

and i tell ya what i have seen many guys who say they are big drifters go on the skid pan and not even be able to do 1 full circle.

so any one who wants to start that is the place to go.

why spend 1000 dollars repairing your car

when you pay 100 and all you want to do is go home and sleep at the end of the day

I have had my fair share of delaing with young people who think they can drift, as I live in a semi-rural hills area about 10mins from the suburbs which has some nice twisty roads, hows this for dodgy -

Top of our driveway, there is a gravel area the council use for roadworks etc, its pretty big. We live on one side, and on the other side is a heap of gum trees and another property. The road itself is pretty decent, its even a stage of the classic adelaide rally. It seems to attract P platers, who like to spin there wheels and make noise etc. One night, a young guy down the road, who just got his P's, decided to impress his mates. They where getting a bit of a run at the gravel and hanging the ass end of the cars out, trying to drift. The speed then got a bit greater, and instead of the car sliding on the gravel, it dug in a little. This then had him doing 80kmph, half sliding and heading rapidly towards a gum tree.

He hit it head on, and as his mates where trying to show off, they have decided to do a bit of a 'team drift' like they show on those dvd's. He hit the tree, bounced back onto the road, and his mate that was following cleaned him right up, at 80kmph.

This was 8 months ago, and both drivers sufferd huge injuries, both where close to dying. Neither of them can walk un-assited and maybe never will, one of them was a son of one of my mums mates. Both admitted they where trying to 'drift'

I also have had several close shaves with dudes trying to drift, one of which nearly cleaned me up head on. One thing in common - all in shitbox cars, P plates

I am a fan of drift, I like watching it, and believe there is a place for it. To do it on public roads is a accident waiting to happen, and in my case, each time I leave my driveway I am reminded of this - save if for the track, where there are less chances of hurting yourself and others

I reckon the 'drift' scene and image is getting out of hand, probably is also one of the reasons for increased police attention to import owners

Proper drift - on a track = good

dodgy drift out the front of peoples house = dumb ass

i can name at lest 10 ppl who wearnt into cars be4 the movie came out, now they are all like drift this and drag that. Its the 'cool' thing now, its all just a fad ATM. Its such big money, and what eva america says is cool 'has' to be cool! :bs!:

look at the fads going around, today every one and his (or her) dog listens to R+B. 3 years ago it was rap. Iv got nothing against either form of music just the image ppl seem to have in their minds is that they are instantly 'cool' if they listen to some shite that the Americans love.

its exactly the same as F+F anyone who was thinking about buying a car now has to have a Jap car to be cool. and of course streetrace cause thats that happens in the movie, and now they allllllllll have to drift cause its the latest and greatest thing in the world of jap cars.

the whole fast & furious crap started the whole drag/neons craze, everybody wanted to be Mr. Vin "I-live-my-life-a-quarter-mile-at-a-time" Diesel drag muscle head.......

then the subbed/dubbed Initial-D got released in the US and Oz(old school to me,i watched the whole series 4-5 years ago.)....now everyone wanted to be Takumi.....or some other character..

Firstly, I've got no time for ppl who are trying to drift on the roads.

We have literally at least 1 event a month here in Sydney ATM so there is no excuse for trying to hit a bus stop.

Now re D1 style drifting, damn straight those guys have skills (and no brains lol) and they way they developed those skills was practicing them. To have a national championship you need strong state and club level events, exactly the same as how circuit racing, rallying, off road racing and drag work.

1 last part of this rant, I totally agree with Ken's comment about the "easygoing" nature of drift evnets compared to circuit....and I'm also sure this will change as things get more professional - I've seen some very dangerous on track behaviour (how about drifting into pit lane?) that won't be tolerated for long.....to keep prices down we need cheap insurance...and for cheap insurance we need professional events where no-one gets hurt.

Nah not just you, while i think its good to see so many imports being enjoyed by people, the fact is to some their cars are a fashion accessory, where as to some of us its our hobby/interest etc :rant:

My thoughts its the fashion accessory guys that are a concern, i cringe when i hear them talk about mechanical mods and fanciful power figures... :Oops: ...then doing the whole drift thing, my head starts to hurt

lol I listen to j-pop while driving sometimes, in fact I have listened to j-pop long before I even got my driver's license. I was and still am heavily into manga (I collected all the Robotech, Gundam and yes... Initial D too). I hate the american translation initial D, it blows goats, they're so African Americanified. Takumi sounds like Paul Walker with his "bros" n shit. They raped transformers, and now they've raped Initial D. And yes I have the Initial D "best soundtrack" cd in my car :rant: (got it in 2001 something) but you don't see me thinking I'm Tak.

The music from Initial D is Eurobeat, not J-pop :rant:

The worst part about US-spec Initial D(ude) is the visual effects on the CGI race sequences!!!

hey darkstar were you the one that nearly hit the wall in a white soarer? i saw a vid of the calder park night and there was a white soarer which i'm pretty sure nudged the wall :P it did look like noahs ark should have been waiting in pit lane tho, was rather wet :)

but if this is just starting out, could be a good way to become pro at a form of motorsport? Not many know how to do it properly, if you can be one of those few ppl while the sport is still in it's infancy in this country, maybe you can get your foot in the door early and be part of something pretty cool?

Yep... can't remember the Civic, but Gan San was definitely driving an NSX.

Best reply of this thread! I always thought drag racing was a waste of a Skyline's abilites... Why have multilink suspension, G-sensors and an 4WS/4WD just to go down the return road...

Second point is exactly right... Unless you are pulled off the teat and put into a go-kart you won't get your racing paid for here.

    • My hold point for future mods is that I want a OEM detachable hard top first, but, finding one is a pain, MX5 Mania are looking for one for me, but, as hens teeth are more common, finding one in Australia is proving problematic  I can get a OEM one from overseas, hell, you can still get new ones in 'Merica, but, shipping is a absolute killer and I cannot justify the cost, or the risk of it being damaged during transport As for the aftermarket hardtops, whilst they do the job of being a hard top, and are fine for a track car, they don't seal well (read: leak like a sieve in the rain), and you need a plastic/poly rear window, plus they are a bolt in option only and not made to be easily removed I liked how the hard top on my NB could be fitted, and removed, by myself, in less than 5 minutes I know it sounds bad, but I'm waiting for someone to write off a car with one so I can swoop in on their pain, it will go to a good home though, so my guilt of this is tempered

    • No, you don't want to plug the vacuum line, as that will turn that side of the booster into an air spring and probably make it feel worse. I'm not saying that the GTR master itself doesn't need a booster. I haven't paid attention to the GTR one to know what size it is cf the non-GTR ones. But when you think about it - they have to do the same job, which is to move a little slave piston a few mm to do what it is supposed to do, and that final action is the same on all the cars. So, it is very unlikely that the GTR MC is any different than the others, because it has the same pedal stroke and the same output requirement. The booster just makes it feel easier. I'd suggest you probably have an actual hydraulic problem. It's totally common on these old shitboxes.
    • Ye, in terms of bolting up the "Conversion" from a GT to a GTT is effectively "Use GTT parts for everything" Except the subframe itself, because you won't want a HICAS/4WS subframe. Remember your ABS system will be different too, thanks to GT being the S15 3 sensor system, instead of the R34 4 sensor system for wheel speed. I do not know how people get this to work given R34 diffs do not have a provision for an ABS sensor (they are on the tone wheels of the axles). I assume***** people use S15 gear/R34NA forever when they realize this - Or they convert it to a rear diff/axles that are R33 style which I presume has the singular speed sensor on the diff itself, but then you have to wire it all in and...and... and...
